I walked into a used sports store 4 years ago and saw ping eye 2 plus. 2 iron through PW bundled with a zip tie and priced at 65 Canadian. I knew what I had found and bought them immediately. Had them all re gripped. Probabably re shaft them before I ever replace them.
16 years ago I had my only son and placed my bag of clubs (Ping Eye 2+ purchased in 1990), I used weekly, into the basement for good hoping someday he would use them. This was the year, after a regripping the deteriorating Winns I put on 18 years ago, we hit the range. He's so into it I looked on craiglist and found another set of Ping Eye 2+ (marked) with original grips. As I wait for the new shafts (from S to R flex) we will soon hitting the course with 2 sets of the finest irons ever made!!
I still play old EYE2s. I cant get away from them.... I started playing them about 10 years ago, sold a set of more "modern" irons, the EYE2s are better. Ping should just keep making them...
I still have my original Ping Eye 2 steel, Eye 2 graphite, and Eye 2+ BeCu and all are very pleasant to use. One of my son's plays at St Andrew's and always uses the Eye 2 steel shafts. I've never noticed any difference with the 2+ clubs. All are super when hit cleanly.
I own a full set of these including the 1 and 2 iron in white dot (upright) configuration. While forged blades may certainly feel softer, these clubs are just as valid today as when they first came out. I bought them in stainless steel. Oh now I wish I had bought the Copper ones! Buying a used set of these would be smart. A one iron can work in south Texas where wind can be incredible.
Got a set in the bag currently, black dot, self extended 2 inches, back weighted to comp the extension. Sweet feel at contact, bit short compared to some modern irons, 145 HD 8 iron, ok I'm 64 years old. Keep the ball on the grass, make a couple of putts shoot 83. Good of a club you can buy. $1.99 each at goodwill less my 20% senior discount. My buddies play all the expensive clubs, when we're done I drink what they buy me.
I just started playing again after a 15+ year hiatus. Pulled out my trusty old Ping Eye 2 irons that I was fitted for in the late 80's. New grips, and they are ready to rock! I might replace them if I continue to play, but getting mixed answers on if technology has REALLY changed enough to buy new irons. I LOVE my Eye 2's and as long as the ball goes in the vicinity of where I want it to, I may just keep playing them!! Thoughts?
I just bought a set of these (3-PW) for $190US shipped. I haven't played in 20 years and just couldn't justify spending $1,000+ for irons without knowing if I REALLY could still get it around. Always wanted these back in the day but couldn't afford them. Can't wait to get out to the range and hit them. I DO realize there's a huge difference in lofts in the modern irons, everything's (IMHO) over-lofted to sell the distance their clubs fly. So I'm hitting an 8 iron and my buddy's hitting a PW, I'm not thinking about that right now. It's about getting back out and finding out just how bad my swing is at my age and just having fun.
i remember the whole groove controversy back then Vgrooves, Ugrooves and parabolic grooves. i always wanted ping eye2 irons and did have put it together yourself knockoffs. i've had i25 irons for 8 years and like them. i also got pxg 0211 irons this year but not completely sold on them. thnx for the video and info, good golfing to you.
Ping eye 2+ are one of my favorite ping irons. The plus had better iron lofts than the original eye2, which had bigger gaps especially between the lower irons. I also quite liked the sole grind and lack of sole bounce on the 9iron to LW for the plus irons. I still have a of set of 1iron to LW of the plus. They are still a great set and are an ideal set for beginners or just to take out now and again for fun.
Still sick , always will be, Ping Forever ! I still remember my first set of eye2$. I remember saying,” now there are no excuses ”. These clubs were miles beyond my previous non cavity back clubs I started with at the time and I knew Karsten Solheim was a Genius ! My Respect for the Company grew as even more forgiving clubs came along like the Zing/Zing2$ with even more perimeter weighting. And regardless of people’s old school mentality when it comes to the looks of the evolution of Ping’s Zing Models, personally I’m into Function. And I knew they were onto something. So,” let the Big Names keep making clubs each year that mimic the original eye2’s shape, while people like Lee Westwood at the time wouldn’t switch from his Touted Ping Zing 2’s that won him lots of money. Anyway , that’s my 2 cents worth. -Vs- Todays Modern Tech with each loft being Ten Yards Further on each iron, simply know your clubs distances.
Thanks for the video! Love the channel. The shaft bands are important to collectors, keep em on no matter what condition they are in. Eye2 started it all! Game improvement. Just like the Anser putter. There are 5 kinds of eye2 irons , sort of. Eye2 + no+, same as the +’s just minus the + in the cavity. Wait, there might be more than 5, I have heard of a version with dots, and I don’t mean the color designation or replaced clubs from Ping. Neat history for a Ping fan to investigate.
I own a set of these clubs- original shaftsI I did not like as I developed a tennis elbow while hitting them (don't know if the shafts were the cause for sure but it put me off of them anyway). Reshafted with graphite and this solved the tennis elbow, but there was absolutely no feel to the hits then. Recently put in Dynamic stiff shafts, and I believe this is going to be the answer as the club feels nice to hit and goes straight and to my expected distances. Time to re-start gaming these irons!
I'm a beginner at golf, I've been practicing for around 4 months now, and this is my first set of clubs. I found red-dot Ping Eye2+, irons 3-9, W, and SW for about $30. I changed the grips and plan to use them for as long as I can. I like knowing that there isn't much I can do to damage the club when I accidentally swing straight into the ground at the range.
I play a set of plus no plus..Reasonably rare only made for about four months..Great irons..The old eye 2 square grooves with the updated plus head design..
The Eye 2+ is one of the great iron designs of all time. First off, it has conforming grooves. 2nd, the original Eye 2 had a tendency to dig whereas the + version is cambered from leading to trailing edge and so glides through the turf better. The sw and lw are perfect complements to the irons- the lw can be opened up enough to look like a spatula. The original KT shaft (orange band) is great for smooth swingers and ppl that prefer reg shafts. The ensuing KT-M shaft is more stout and can handle aggressive swings.
I have been playing I200 s for a few years now. Friend gave me a set of eye 2 plus , I put the 5 iron in my bag, hit it better than my i200. I have played probably 10 different ping sets going back to the 80s. Lived near the facility. Have had tendonitis lately so had set of fubuki iron shafts laying around thought maybe graphite would be easier on the arm. Going to marry them to the eye 2+ heads and see what happens. Even on the stock stiff iron shaft they feel more muted and soft than my forged srixons. Ill report back. But I cannot off hand see how a good golfer can't be good with eye 2. In fact I wonder if the eye 2 was the most steadfast design in the history of modern golf. These guys that say they are beginners asking if ping eye2 would be ok...........I would say they would be a no brainer. You could go from a 20 handi to a 5 handi and use these clubs. Ill report back.
I like the original Ping Eye 2 U grooves. If you're not careful you'll grab the V grooves where the Karsten USA sets in the bag upside down and the V is conforming
TGIF!!! I still have my PING EYE 2's from the mid 80's. Love love love them! I actually had the EYE2 Plus in a one iron I bought at a golf show. That baby hit bullets! ZZ lite shaft s came on mine. PING EYE 2's are still a good iron even today. The "standard lofts" of the PINGS are emasculating by today's version of jacked up lofts. So if you have "penis envy" these are not for you.....BUT! If you are secure in your manhood play'em baby and enjoy! Keep up the good work Mr. Vintage Golfer! NEXT!!!!!!!!
I found a black dot Ping Eye 2 + SW for $30 from a handful of garage sale clubs, gave the rest of the clubs away because i only wanted that club specifically
Ive been playing the Eye 2 +/-+ as my every day set since 1990. There is very little difference between the + and the original. The lofts are slightly stronger on the short irons but the head profile, feel etc are all the same. IIRC 1/2 degree stronger starting at the 4, 1 degree stronger starting at the 9, and a 54 degree S. They hit to the exact same yardages for me. The only real difference is the sole design on the 9, w, s, and L irons. Some prefer the older style, some prefer the newer style. Really, the plus and original version are the same clubs. Minor re-fresh like a wheel change on a car.
Just thought I'd mention that the lofts are different on eye 2s and eye 2 plusses. The plus being slightly stronger, actually like a modern player club. 27 degrees five iron while the eye 2 is 28.5 degrees, only a half degree difference in the four iron, 24,5 VS 25 for the eye 2 and 3, 2 and i irons are identical. Compared to modern aggressively lofted clubs, there is a two clubs difference or more like a club and a half. For example a "modern" 7 iron is lofted at 27 degrees while an eye 2 plus 5 iron is also lofted at 27 degrees, however because of the one inch longer shaft length in the 5 iron, the difference is more like a club and a half. Modern technology allows strongly lofted clubs to hit the ball up while older technology like Ping's eye 2s and eye 2 plusses relied purely on loft. They aren't identical by any stretch. I think it's fair to say that the difference in trajectory is 1 1/2 clubs when comparing modern to eye 2 +. When comparing to eye 2s, it's definitely a two clubs difference.
My dad was playing these black dots up until about 2 years ago, and if he didn't break his 5 iron and lose 7i (lost about 5-10 years ago w/o replacement), he would probably still be playing them! I have to beg him to use something besides a 5 iron and 3 wood
Still have my Air Bears from early 80’s. Always thought they were the best clubs. Just got a set of 1980’s Ping Eye 2s. Love them. Tired of using my PXGs. Never could get used to the stronger lofts. BTW. 8 degree difference between the Pings and PXG 211s across all irons.
Original eye2 had to be regrooved to conform in UK. Any club still with the white line on the bottom groove an indication that is non conforming. indication
It didn't matter if you were a beginner, long time hack, accomplished player or touring professional. If you played Ping irons back then everybody used the same Eye 2's. Any other Ping irons out there were just an older model. One. Just one. Shafts and grips varied of course. The rarest of any Ping iron would be the Sanvik Titanium shaft option, very expensive. Joe Flubbashot can't identify with the Ping players on tour anymore, with their scratch level tiny blades that say Ping...somewhere, and wedges that look just like any other bladed wedge. Identity crisis.
I still game these clubs. I don’t care about the weak loft number on the head game, it’s totally irrelevant. I had my set 1-iron through PW refurbished recently and they look brand new. I’ve spent thousands of dollars over the years on more modern strong lofted clubs and I always come back to my Pings. The irons are deadly accurate, especially the short irons. The PW is unbelievably accurate. These clubs hit the ball dead straight, even with off- center hits. I’ve demo’d hundreds of different irons over the years and nothing even comes close. Ping could reintroduce a modern version of this set and they would sell like crazy.
Never cared what club hit what distance...or some average number....doesn't matter if I hit a 5 iron, to someone's 7....if i hit my target, and score...that's the bottom line....your score...i gave a group lesson for the club pro when i was 16...one of the attendees was a real ass...said a kid couldn't teach him anything. The pro heard him...said he would take care of it.... after the seminar,(short game techniques)....he said grab your 3 iron, 9 iron and putter...meet me at the first tee....he bet the ass 100 bucks I could beat him through 3 holes...with three clubs....this guy could blast it... but had no game...no distance control, no course management skill.... yes, I got the 100 bucks... Play you game, your clubs, your ball... a pro would still beat most amateur players with a Walmart starter set....
Late model Taylormade long sticks, scotty c putter, and ping eye2 plus (orange dot, 4 to sw) in my bag. Tried the lot - callaway, cleveland, titleist, you name it.... used to import all brands to Australia. I don't believe they have improved irons much, if at all - just changed loft and length. I wouldn't go back to the Ping Eye woods though.
You say they’re ping as though they’re basic easy irons to hit that are not at your level. I’d love for you to use my Blueprint ping blades then let’s see if you have the same opinion on pings. I can guarantee you wouldn’t be able to hit them, you can barely hit the eye 2 cast irons which are still very good irons for golfers of all abilities
Bought mine new in 1991 and still play them. My friends can’t believe it. They play fantastic.
The best clubs ever made, EVER MADE.
Hi,Jesper Parnevik playd on these in the 90th,so did I!
I am still playing my Ping Eye 2+ irons that I bought used as a 13 year old in 1994. I like them.
these in the copper will probably never be beaten
I still play the ping eye 2 black dots I got back in 1990 . Dad had them for 6 months before giving them to me . Best club ever

I still play old EYE2s. I cant get away from them.... I started playing them about 10 years ago, sold a set of more "modern" irons, the EYE2s are better. Ping should just keep making them...

I own the regular one. I still play with it. it's like any modern golf club. very nice irons highly recommended.

I have a full set of ping eye2+ lob wedge through 3 iron will never give them up absolutely my favorite i even play my ping b60 putter 😊
im playing them in 2024 with $1500 in woods. I chose Eye2 irons
I just started playing again after a 15+ year hiatus. Pulled out my trusty old Ping Eye 2 irons that I was fitted for in the late 80's. New grips, and they are ready to rock! I LOVE my Eye 2's and as long as the ball goes in the vicinity of where I want it to, I may just keep playing them!! Thoughts?
I still play eye 2s as well. Did you ever end up changing?
I too still use eye 2’s. I got fitted last year and the fitter told me to stick with the eye 2’s. Why spend 1000’s on 10 yards.
I've tried to replace my ping eye 2s but they're perfect
I just bought a set of these (3-PW) for $190US shipped. I haven't played in 20 years and just couldn't justify spending $1,000+ for irons without knowing if I REALLY could still get it around. Just wondering, how did you get on with them?
The cranked lofts mean nothing they just added the approach wedge to the bag hahaw
I game the G5s but have several ping eye 2 and 2+ sets...will always procure more for the right price. just a fantastic club
I just got a complete set; picking them up this morning, complete with putter and woods. Going to rock them on the course as my vintage set
i remember the whole groove controversy back then Vgrooves, Ugrooves and parabolic grooves. i always wanted ping eye2 irons and did have put it together yourself knockoffs. i've had i25 irons for 8 years and like them. i also got pxg 0211 irons this year but not completely sold on them. thnx for the video and info, good golfing to you.
Just picked up a set of the plus, non-plus. 1-9, W,S,L. Taking them to the range on Monday! Nice video

Bought mine in 90 by my 90s, still in the bag today.....never found anything better
I still play my E2's I bought new in 89 along with woods. Sometimes I wonder what have I missed with other brands and styles🤔
I have these exact irons in my backup set of Pings!
Still sick , always will be, Ping Forever !
I still remember my first set of eye2$. I remember saying,” now there are no excuses ”.

They may be as old me but I played these until last season. Great clubs. Still keep the SW in my bag and don't think it'll ever be leaving.

I play a set of plus no plus..Reasonably rare only made for about four months..Great irons..The old eye 2 square grooves with the updated plus head design..
My dad is getting me a set of eye 2 irons for my first set
I just recently found a set of Ping Eye 2 Copper Berilium irons from the mid 80's in Mint Condition! ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!
Lucky bastard. But being mint condition, you must never use them, eh?
The Eye 2+ is one of the great iron designs of all time. Like your work, keep it up! Had a little in-depth on grips today, so hate to correct but that's actually a tour velvet grip, not a tour wrap :)
Did some research and ended up buying a set of these from a used golf store for $119 for my first set of irons 👍
Still play the Ping Eye 2 irons and love them
I have been playing I200 s for a few years now. Friend gave me a set of eye 2 plus , I put the 5 iron in my bag, hit it better than my i200. Love these clubs!

It is a little bigger. There are are no half circles around the the eye and u grooves The sand wedge of this series is killer.
Hi everyone, I'm a beginner, would you recommend these irons to those just starting out? Thank you

Loving your channel. Have you hit or talked about the beryllium copper version? A bucket list club for me
You are right!
Also try and play a set of Nicklaus bear irons, they are also quite good and no one really mentions them. From around year 1998.
Just found some on the side of the road
Original eye2 had to be regrooved to conform in UK. Any club still with the white line on the bottom groove an indication that is non conforming.

ZZ lite a great shaft!!
Still have mines Green Dot 😆
Basically the same club as ping eye2 besides the grooves.
