Sometimes when using earphones with included mic the jack can confuse the jack, especially in older devices. Try using headphones with two segments on the jack and not 3. Keep them coming Vince....
It also doesn't help that phone headsets don't always use the same pin outs between handsets and manufacturers. Plus some older iPods used a 4 pole jack connectors for the optional inline remote control so that could be why the iPod worked with phone headset.
29 minute video uploaded only a few minutes ago and there are already people hitting thumbs down, haters will be haters, Not me - I look forward to your videos
I do hit dislike on videos from time to time, I even did disliked a few of Vince' ones (not this one, tho it does not matter). On one or two I did quickly after watching a minute or two, realizing for whatever reason I personally did not enjoy the content of that video, the style or the quality of it. To me the dislike button is not a "I hate you or your content Vince" but "My friend Vince, I personally did not enjoy this video" I don't think RUclips's feedback options are in particular great, but the like/dislike ratio gives Vince at least a bit of a gauge.
Hi Vince, I was wondering why you weren't uploading much recently, so thanks. Because of being inspired by you I have recently repaired a Sony UBP X700 uhd Blu-ray player, and just today was replacing switches and faulty RGB LEDs in a razer blackwidow chroma. So thanks for the confidence to give things a go.
This is awesome. I love your philosophy that fix it for the fun of it and making youtube content and then selling it on or giving it away to family and friends. Keeps these items out of landfills and get them to have a good useful life especially if they were returned or breathe new life into items that are hard to get.
Using 400°C on a board that small can rip pads. The "old" design irons have really low thermal mass, and suggest using a "new" style iron like the TS100 or KSGER T12 Station with heater & tip built-in. Otherwise, amazing video as always!
Hey Vince, great video. The 3 pins headphones jacked are more common than a 4 pins one. 4 pin is for an headphone with a mic or can be use for skipping tracks or so. So no bad design Vince
the reason the iPod worked with the 4-contact headphone cable was because it doesn't gave the sensing capability at all. it doesn't have speakers so it doesn't need to detect if headphones are connected before switching outputs, it just always powers the headphone jack (and doesn't need to turn off power to anything else). the radio would have 5 contacts (left, right, ground, and two which short together when the headphones are plugged in). the iPad would only have 3 (left, right, and ground). not saying the jack manufacturer shouldn't have accommodated for this by just moving the contacts though.
Ohhhh I never put any thought to the headphone plugs like that. Also thanks for keeping the regular uploads, even small ones like this are fun to watch, especially during these times. Best wishes for you and your family. Stay healthy.
I'm a huge fan or your random fixes around the house I watch because we both work in a similar way and we tend to think the same thing when fault finding so its extra fun to guess what it might be then hear what you think (its usually the same) keep them coming ill keep watching for sure
Yes, same here. 320-350°c is considered "normal" pcb soldering temp. But you may need to adjust that depending of the pcb, solder and iron... 400 seems a lot especially if used for several seconds on one spot... may start to lift traces etc.
It seems scary, but he’s usually working on game consoles, which have a massive ground plane. I use 450° daily on consoles and have to lower temps when I work on smaller boards for fear of heat damage.
Vince if you do any more future renovation projects and have more time on your hands then please film it for us. As long as it's not boring it should get the views.
Love your videos. I really like your background music also. Unlike so many others on RUclips who force me and I'll sure others to lower volume, because of playing heavy bass or the like.
The speaker cutoff in the jack socket is staggered so that when you plug headphones in the speakers don't cut in and out while you are inserting the jack. It will only cut the speaker when the jack plug is fully inserted. The iPod doesn't do this because it doesn't have a speaker to cut off...
Do not try plastic dip. Even if you get the right rubber surface. It is really hard to get in the right color and it react so on the old rubber it is one color and on plastic it is a nother. Thank you for a entertaining video!
Tip-Ring-Sleeve support on devices usually designs for using those with fewer but not with more than the device was designed to use. The Nano works with those TRRS headphones because it supports headsets. The Radio doesn't- it only works with TRS. You would see the same problem with the iPod if you used a dual Stereo headset that used a TRRRS connector.
The ipod doesn't need this "extra" pin in the headphone plug because it doesn't have a speaker in order to detect if the headphones are plugged in. A lot of devices though, even in our days, are confused/don't play normally if you plug in a 4 segment headphone jack where you supposed to plug only headphones with 3 segments.
Come on Vince...you know that we are waiting for a PS4 or Xbox one repair. And make it one hour long so that it feels like watching a movie. Or better. Love your channel btw.
in the old days of chassis mount 3.5 sockets a ts would have 3 wires and a stereo / trs socket would have 5. in the simple case of a mono ts for example the ground / sleeve was 1 wire from sound out to socket then straight to speaker. the other positive output went to a trminal on the tip part of the socket, with a copper piece touching another piece which then went to the out terminal and ooff to the speaker. inserting the plug meant the tip interrupted this connection, and the signal flowed down the plugs tip instead and to the earphone. removal reversed the process. the trs was similar with 2 more terminals to facilitate the middle extra ring for second channel...
Wonderfully done trying to fix video. Almost passed it twice because I thought it wasn't interesting but thought I would give it a watch. Looking forwards towards more
Great job =D You tend to find cheap electronic devices go with the old 3 pin headphone standard still! It's a bit of wierd thing in general where some devices just go with 3 pin, some go with the 4 pin.
The normal is 3 contacts on the jack, and 4 is usually used if the item needs a microphone, like for a mobile phone. An FM and DAB radio only needs 3 of course.
That was 80 percent plastic by volume and the rest actual useful components XD. Great video though. Do you have any good sources for soldering? I wanna get into it. There's stuff like flux I don't quite understand.
Headphone port is not faulty. It is a 3 pin socket designed for a standard 3 pin 3.5 mm headphone plug. I have never come across a radio with a socket designed for a 4 pin plug. As to the USB power socket - the problem lies with the delicate connections of a surface mount component. Excess force by the user when inserting a USB plug easily pushes the socket off its tiny soldered pads. Your solution of glue behind the socket is good and manufacturers sometimes use this technique at the production stage.
He bought a job lot ages ago. I think they're all faulty returns so someone's done that to kinda distance the brand? To stop anyone passing them off as better than they are.
the three pole is the correct one... the four pole are designed with a mic.. and you do not use that on a radio... the 4 pole is for phones that need the Mic.
They should still work as the 3 poles are still in the same position on the 4 pole connector. I just tried my headset with mic in just a headphone jack on my PC and they work fine. Backwards compatible in my case. Maybe his headphone port is a bit fussy.
@@SPEXWISE A lot of 3-pole connectors are not compatible with 4-pole and will give you the same symptoms as in the video (works correctly if you don't plug it all the way in).
I have a laptop with a combo 3.5mm jack, and my headphones with mic are for PC and have the same 4 pole config, but when pluged in directly, the mic doesn't work. Only works when i use a spliter to 2 3.5mm jacks and join them toghether again with an adapter. And i've tried them on my phone and on my Switch, same thing. Kinda strange, if you ask me.

On the micro USB port, I noticed that the solder connection near the lettering was cracked. Since micro USB has a ground pin, it won't affect function, but the connector is weakened mechanically and more prone to break the repaired connections.
