To be fair, this bond is to try to delay paying the E. Jean Carroll judgment. If his assets are mortgaged (as Cohen says) he will be bankrupted next week.
That’s not really how it works. There is a financial monitor controlling the Trump organization, as soon as the payment is due the state of New York will contact the financial monitor to send a list of possible assets to seize. They will sell Trumps real estate to the highest bidder until the judgement is paid. The money will then go in a trust account as it has to be paid back if Trump wins the appeal (which he won’t, of course) Jail is only an option if selling his real estate is not able to cover the judgment.
For a civil judgement you don’t go to jail, they just seize all your assets to pay for it. If that’s not enough then there are a few other ways to try and get more money. But once the person is bankrupt there isn’t much they can do except garnish wages. That’s why it doesn’t make much sense to sue someone with nothing. You will probably spend a bunch on counsel and not get anything if you win.
