I remember them days. In the late 70s my first good bike was a Schwinn scrambler. Before that I Just had a Huffy. My Schwinn had bladed forks, mag wheels fat knobie tires. My Father painted and put together for me. RIP POPS. Good memories
I still have my Schwinn Mag Scrambler in my shed. When my daughter was little and learning to ride, I put a banana seat on it and a super long seatpost with sissy bar so my adult legs could ride that bike again. It was perfect to ride with my kid while she was also on 20" wheel bikes.
Fantastic video. I got my first BMX bike(Huffy) in the late 70's and then for one of my birthdays I got this beautiful blue Webco frame. Great time to be a kid in orange county.
Absolutely killer! I didn't have welding skills, so I just used a broomstick and a can of spray paint to fashion a top tube on my old Schwinn. Hopefully some rebellious kids look at this and get that fire in their bellies. God knows this generation needs them.
That definitely brought a smile to my face. My little brother was heavy into the BMX scene in central Florida starting in the late 70s. He and our father were staples at the tracks. Good times.
The comments on the BB shell/crank mods brought back some memories. Dennis' Welding on Pico in West L.A. did mine. Along with raising the BB shell to run the Varsity/Collegiate cranks and 39 ring, he would heat and straighten the stock Sting Ray fork, remove the extra part of the seat-stays past the seat-tube, and put in a extra tube behind the head-tube for support. That was truly the trick set up in the early days.
growing up in Santa ana /tustin in the early 70s was amazing so many trails and saddle back park just up the road crazy time , this could have been any of us back in the day ,, and yes we built our own bikes for sure ,, my real first job was was at orange county raceway ,, clean up crew ,, what a time
I was a little later to the game, probably around '75 when I got into it. But seeing those Redline forks in this video brought a flood of memories! I hadn't thought about those in decades. I remember my Jimmy Weinert frame, my buddy's Webco, and so much more, but I hadn't thought about those Redlines in forever and a half. Thanks for sharing this video.
I grew up in Santa Monica....bunch of us could wheelie our Stingrays for blocks and we would jump them off anything we could find...;-) Wish I still had mine...
My first bike was a yellow Stingray. My last bike was a Redline RL Pro Styler. Mongoose, Kuwahara, SE PK Ripper, a bunch of SE Quadangle, Patterson 24” cruiser, a Mike Dominguez prototype, and a Mongoose Decade were in between.
Im from Ohio. I remember traveling to SoCal in 1976 to race bmx. We had no tracks in Ohio yet. Cant remember the track but I do remember a picture of Stu Thompson doing a massive tabletop in the pro shop😂
Being a kid of the sixties we road those bikes hard and put them away wet I honestly think the bikes today couldn't take the kind of abuse we put on those bikes. Today kids don't want bikes there a kid around here that's 12 and can't even ride a bike being a boomer our stuff was made tuff because we were tough not bragging but kids today are nowhere near us!
I started on a sky blue Schwinn Stingray Jr. in 1969 that later in 1974 became my BMX conversion with knobby tires Scrambler bars. In 1977 I got a chrome Scrambler 36/36 for Christmas and in 1979 I got a Mag Scrambler with paper route money. I hit a growth spurt in 1982 and my beloved BMX bikes were to small for me so I moved on to motorcycles.
This all looks so cool, because this was the era I grew up in. We all thought we were really cool. But now, oh my..you have learned to defy gravity. You flip them and double flip them to our "cross-overs" lol...but we'll never tell you how really amazing you ARE! haha..can you still say "you love us" and really mean it ? *wink*
Sting Rays were comfortable to ride long distances because of its banana seat, the bikes today are not very comfortable that's why you don't see as many kids riding as much as we used to...bring back the Sting Ray !!!
5:36 the blue bike, we used to use Schwinn Jr bars instead of the ones like the cow bars or the ones with a crossbar in them, that way we could right standing up and put our knees between the bars, back in the 70's that is.
Its cool and all dont get me wrong it definitely was the best time to be a kid...but lets see some of those wipe outs and failures.. because back then..when we went down,we went down hard and came up with scars ..lol..lets relive some of those memories...lol
I miss riding bikes in the early 70's . great times !

nobody talks about those HEAVY DUTY RIMS that would never bend or warp but wieghed a ton
.also buffallo bars.
That definitely brought a smile to my face. My little brother was heavy into the BMX scene in central Florida starting in the late 70s. He and our father were staples at the tracks. Good times.
In the mid/late 1970's i had a blue Mongoose with yellow Tuff wheels and some ashtabula cranks and Roger Decoster forks. Man I loved that bike.
Great times I miss it a lot still got my 68 orange karate and 72 Ross barracuda
Orange karate hell ya!!!

Same thing me and my friends were doing in the mid 70.s. awesome

Great vid'!! This has shown more about the history of the creation of the BmX bike than any other i've seen!
WOW! Harry Leary, Stu Thompson - I haven't heard their names since I was ten!
I didn't recognize stu. Harry ID recognize anywhere

I grew up in Santa Monica....bunch of us could wheelie our Stingrays for blocks and we would jump them off anything we could find...;-) Wish I still had mine...

I use to always ride my bike in the church parking lot. Lol. I think I still got rocks in my knees, you couldn't keep me down!

Me and my friends have those same bikes and do a lot of stunts!

Very Interesting and fun !
Sting Rays were comfortable to ride long distances because of its banana seat, the bikes today are not very comfortable that's why you don't see as many kids riding as much as we used to...bring back the Sting Ray !!!
1963 1/2 & 1964 had the Solo Polo seat very uncomfortable 1965 the Banana seat comes out much better still got my 63
My last bike was a sting ray in 75 long sissy bar then in 76 got my first car now I want a old sting ray or Apple krate again the complete circle.
They still make the sting ray, just not the same quality, and BMX bikes just have uncomfortable seats for many reasons
I remember thinking Stu Thompson was like 50 years old when he raced for Redline
5:36 the blue bike, we used to use Schwinn Jr bars instead of the ones like the cow bars or the ones with a crossbar in them, that way we could right standing up and put our knees between the bars, back in the 70's that is.
Ya todos estamos viejos y achacosos pero nos dimos gusto en esta vida,lo comido y bailado nadie nos lo quita Amen
I remember those little short Cranks
Stingray, Redline Forks, Kickback hub.
We went through a lot of tires. haha
Ah yes, skidding contests on a once clean white sidewalk!
So Good😎
I had a 68 deep blue Huffy
The was 70’s life for the boys
i'm 62 and we rode our bikes everyday and in the 70's we had to build our BMX bikes, There were no fat kids in the 70's
We Had Ten Speed seat Pedals Jr. StingRay Bars
hey what about heavy duty rims! damn they were heavy,,but they never folded like a stock rim
remember those heavy duty rims that never bent
brodie-slides!
Its cool and all dont get me wrong it definitely was the best time to be a kid...but lets see some of those wipe outs and failures.. because back then..when we went down,we went down hard and came up with scars ..lol..lets relive some of those memories...lol
