Do u happen to know what is acceptable tolerance around zero

Depends on the procedure. I would say about +/- 0.080 in or 2 mm

thank you for that lessen, but i believe if calibrate your incouder on different surfaces the resulation of that incouder reading will vary

Yes. Ideally you want to calibrate on the same surface.
