  • In this video we will zoom in on the diet of the elite athletes in Kaptagat, Kenya (the home of many of the world’s fastest marathoners). Studying the diets of elite runners can not only be a fun comparison to your own nutritional intake, it can also be a great way to better appreciate and confirm many of the scientifically proven nutritional concepts. I hope this might help you as well to improve your recovery and health. Small changes in diet can accumulate to large health differences over time! I have been in Kenya before and have seen the lifestyle of many of the kenyan runners.
Like many aspects of the life of an athlete in rural Kenya, it was simple, frugal and repetitive.

he gonna need alot of carb to perform like that, but for most of us who just go to gym 40 min cardio and weight lift get ur protein intake high

Interesting they only intaking 6% cals from fat. This would also mean they arent ingesting any ultra processed junkfood containing fried industrial seed oils/pufas. 6% is reasonably hard to hit but its also avoids the Randle Cycle which makes sense. Diets high in fat and carbs like the 45% fat 40% carbs 15% protein are the worst if they include alot of fried foods in oil.
These kenyan runners are having steamed/boiled white rice, polenta (corn porridge essentially), white sugar tea, and carbs from red kidney beans by the looks of it. Cheap calories and high energy to burn up with 2 sessions a day. Interesting they only eat meat once a wk, which is much closer to plantbased in terms of the "bulk" of their calories/energy. Eggs maybe 2 x a wk? 😊

Yes they don't fry a lot of stuff. Only the potato's and chapati. However most often there is rice or ugali with beans on the menu. Meat once or twice a week and also eggs in the diet (probably few times a week). And a lot of sweet kenyan thee (with also a little bit of protein and fat from the fresh milk).

Haha, a lot worse. Milk is a very important protein source for them.
