This film captures so much - the strength of the four women interviewed, the importance of self-defense for all (I'd be scarred too if someone followed me home or tried to climbed through my windows), the intensity of the training, the joy of the trainees. The Berkeley IAW is more than a school - its a community.
Great to see women being empowered and gaining confidence through this art. My only slight critique would be the term "one-hitter quitter" used around the 3:00 mark; not so much the usage of the term, but the mindset behind it. One should never assume one hit will stop or drop an attacker. Even when training with firearms, we never assume one shot center mass will stop an attacker, so it should be stressed even more when talking about unarmed self-defense. There are far too many unknowns about your assailant's determination, training, pain tolerance, fitness level, and drug/alcohol influence to assume a single strike/kick will end the conflict. Perhaps she was just using a catchy phrase and I'm reading too much into it, but I don't want people to enter into a violent confrontation with unrealistic expectations. That's the worst place to learn your lesson.
I started wing chun a year ago and I love it, I find that the female students take to it really well because they are very soft and don't have the male problem of always wanting to use strength. I'd recommend that if your interested to give it a go. I'm going to my first seminar next weekend and I can't wait. Thank you for the videos Sifu.
I'm quite confused with the contents of this course... What about the centerline theory ? I see all kinds of people here with their elbows wide open which in my Wing Chun style is know as openings and prone to attacks and counterattacks. I get it that it's a style oriented to self defense, but has it proved its efficiency. Also, a lot of stiffness can be seen all around, which again contradicts all I've learned so far, but then again it's only a point of view...
I actually quite agree. Wing Chun uses the body structure for a weaker person to be able to generate more power. But again theses females are beginners and everyone does it a bit wrong when they start. Definitely center line theory is the core of Wing Chun's attack and defense. Good on them though to empower themselves. Kudos!
Ufc... fighting in a ring with rules.... all martial arts, Ufc, boxing, wing chung, karate are bull shit unless you know how to use them effectively. I'm guessing you are one of the 'UFC is the best!! Best fighters in the world!!!' Maybe they are... but Kung fu is not a competition art.. If a mugger grabs you in the street you use what you've learned. I can tell you know if someone holds a knife up to a ufc fighter and says give me your money' he gives him the money..
