General contractor in Alaska, gotta say i love this guy! Just last year started doing my own drywall work which i always found a bit intimidating. This guy has taught me everything i know about drywall. Im now mediocre! Thanks a billion for your time sir
Laurier Desormeaux and now Vancouver Carpenter. Whenever I want to ask my son why he wants to watch other people play video games, I remember that I'm sub'd to two drywall channels.
no different than watching any other "sport". at least a video game streamer will interact with the viewers which makes it a better experience. Imagine if pro sport players were tweeting/posting about plays and interacting with their fans while the game was going (obviously they wouldn't be actually playing but benched or something).
Recently I help a friend with repair interior water damage to the drywall. Little did I know that watching your videos would be so helpful so soon. Just want to express my Thanks. I really enjoyed the experience and the confidence that came with it. Thank you.
This is what I call my beginners tool taping kit. I’m not a full time mudder. So not buying a bazooka at $1000+. Bought it that Better Than Ever kit for $900 and got everything you showed and a banjo. Corners have become quicker and easier then doing by hand. Gotta love tools.
Another great video. I’ve never run those exact tools but I have ran the full set of taping tools with the flexible angle head. We used to use the Ames rental tools and for new construction, that’s the only way to go to me. Tools speed up the job so much over hand finishing and taping everything. I do have a 10 inch mud box and did a video comparing that to hand finishing and it was way faster, of course.
I bought a new set of taping tools at first and then I went to pawn shops etc until I picked up multitudes of extra other brand pieces and took care of them all. Really you need to upgrade even further but I realize you are teaching newbies. A lot of us has put on enough tape to go the the moon.you really show competence at what you are doing.
For years I have done my own home improvement and I love doing drywall. But, I always had trouble with corners till I watched your videos. Just getting the mud really thin made a world of difference. Thank you.
Taper and corner tools are a must if you do literally more than one square room. The clean up is absolutely worth the speed and (more importantly for me) substitution for skills. Really takes the fear out of "did I put enough mud" or "did I make too many passes." You'll also be the coolest friend on the block.
Thanks for taking the time to do your vids. I like to keep my compound tube and flushers and even my mixing paddle in a canadian tire hardshell rifle case.🇨🇦
Honestly I had no idea Dry wall was so complicated I did it a little when I was a kid, but 90% of the information in your videos is news to me. Glad that the weather is warming up, really hoping to learn more about carpentry
I don’t have any trouble running my mud thicker than your second coat. And i only use the direct fusher alone as an applicator and and a finisher. It takes a couple passes to get it perfect and less time overall. And for first pass just a 2- 1/2 flusher after a banjo or bazooka. Is super quick and clean. Anyway I like your videos. I have learned much.
I live in the U.K. Dry walling does not seem to be as popular over here. I only started because i could not afford to employ a plasterer as they are expensive . So I used plaster board to finish the inside of my house and used this drywall system. The tools cost me quite a lot of money but considering i have now completed the entire house I guess its worked out much cheaper overall.. Anyway just thought i would say your videos helped me along the way. Like everything it looks easy but it is not !!! The more you do the better you get and now i can say i do think its a relatively easy thing to do "but the tools are important" as you quite rightly point out.. So!!!! In a long winded way I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to show us D.I.Y ers how its done.. Keep up the good work and i wish you and your family well during these difficult times !!
Thanks so much for this vid. Just ordered the kit. I'm remodeling one of my rentals, and I really hate corners. Looking forward to zipping right along!!
Great video 🖒. I commented on one of your other videos as well. I'm a taper by trade and as I said before you do great work. Here In Ontario, some guys do corners with the tools you used, the difference is most of us skip the roller and just use the flusher and we don't use the corner sander and just use a regular sander on the edges then use a corner sponge the corners afterwards. I personally do it all by hand but with the tools (and right technique) the tools certainly do produce a nice quality job. Keep up the great videos. I always like to see how other's do the job and I try little tips they do to maybe help speed up my game 😊🖒.
5:45 As an aside, don't use recessed can lights anymore! These disk lights are way better, and they can mount anywhere regardless of joist/rafter placement(as seen on the left).
Thanks for finally getting around to making the video on taping tools, Ben! Been patiently waiting for it for ages. Ha-ha! Absolutely loving these videos. Message me your info so I can send you some patronage at some point. Cheers.
We’re in southern Ohio. We have a house that was built in 1975. It has stomped ceilings & we’d like to make them flat. We were wondering what type of mud should we put on the ceiling? The dry time is not a factor because it’s currently empty. Love you videos. Have learned a lot.
Wow that mud was soooo thin. Crazy! Really enjoyed the video thanks Ben. Please put the link for the tools on. As a non pro I’m thinking a banjo and a couple of corner tools might just be enough for the little jobs I do.
Banjo with a roller and flusher does a great job. For finishing you can use one of those lambswool corner rollers to apply mud and finish pass( I think, never tried it). Tools are in the video description. There is nothing there I wouldn't personally use.
THAT is a closet? Geeze. That could be my bedroom. Lol. Nice job. I just drywalled a room in the basement and will be doing mud and tape this weekend. Been watching your vids for tips. Thanks.
I’m convinced. I just ordered the set. I have a medium sized (large for me) job coming up to learn on. I was going to do it with hand tools but it’s time to upgrade.
Eric Budrow ya I can’t wait to get a set it cuts time in half if u know what ur doing. It’s all about mudd consistency it has to be thin enough to suck up with applicator head
Great vid! Before I buy some corner tools…. Please explain the difference how this corner flusher works so well vs the Hand corner tool (currently propping up your plank somewhere 😂). Otherwise. I’m sold. Great vid once again! Cheers from Toronto.
So, I am doing a full duplex reno - all 3 floors. I was...ahem, wondering if you have any travel plans to come out east for vacay? We do have an F1 race in June and great Jazz fest, in case you were wondering...:) You know, just in case
But why not use a bazooka then roller and glazer?. Unless the are too expensive??? Some guys arent stong enough to run the bazooka all day especially being on stilts with it.
Hello there! I'm about to buy my first flusher (us amazon is my only option... We do not have these here, in Poland :( unfortunately!). And the thing is: which size should I buy? Usually I'm using 2" wide paper tape or 2.4" strait flex tuff tape - so, I should rather choose 3" or 3,5" flusher? "CanAm Tool Corner Flusher with Roller Wheels (3.5")" vs. "CanAm Tool C300-RR Direct Corner Flusher with Roller Wheels - For Applying Drywall Compound and Feathering Corners With A Fainter Touch (3" Widetrack)" - both available on amazon. Thank you in advance for your reply. Have a nace day, greets : )
Hi, nice video...at the 1:48 time frame you show a BLUE pole with the letters USA on it. What brand of pole is this? I'd like to get one. May seem silly to most, but I go out-of-my-way to buy Blue tools etc. Thanks & I've Subscribed!
Mr. Vancouver, question, I have some USG ALL Purpose mud compound to use for taping (paper). Can I also use this for finishing? Can I add a little water to it to make more workable for filling holes and finishing? Txs for your input. Tony G
Am I mistaken or did the tape get cut on the inside corner at 12:33? If it did, what would you do in that situation? I’ve had it happen a couple of times when hand taping and I would just pull the tape off and start again. Can you just mud over it?
the tools sometimes leave marks in the corners, might also be from the sanding pole. youre correct in removing torn tapes as its lost all its strength. if its a long tape just cut it off from where the tape broke and reapply
Have watched this about five times now. Where/what is that corner sander 13:38 and where to buy? Any thoughts on doing an automatic taper series? Thanks again!
I didn't see a link to the red Better Than Ever corner applicator you were using. I have the smaller aluminum ones you have in your links, but the longer red one you were using seems to roll easier.
I have heard that you want to run the walls with a damp rag to get the drywall dust off or the mud won't adhere very well if you sand before another coat. Ever had any problems with cracks or anything after applying mud on dusty drywall?
I love the tools you were using. I like the one you call the mud syringe and of course the two in corner tool. I am just starting out can you help with a good selection of tool like mud syringe and the 2 in corner tool
Hello Ben. good video, I was wondering what is the brand of your angled sander that screws into the sponge? because we in canada we only have one model for it's sponge and it's richard and it's not great you have to put gray tape on the sponge because the claws come to wear the sponge quickly if you go too hard so not ideal as a process to maintain the sponge in place...
When your work intersects an existing painted surface, do you wash the area prior to applying the compound to ensure good paint adhesion? If painters came along later and started scrubbing down the paint, they could really mess up your feathering, or worse. I know they prefer a clean and scuffed surface for warranty, etc.
I never do. If the painter washes unprimed mud they are being a bit of a dummy. The painted areas next to the feathered edge are already sanded by me anyway so they should stay well away from it. I would only wash the walls if they were super greasy. A good sealer should bond without a major washing.
I differ from Ben here. I TSP painted wall always. It removes the dirt, yes, but also the acid removes the finishers in the paint. This gives the next coats some real bite. This ensures the next paint / primer does not roll up dirt and leave it on the wal. I realize it's not warranted on many guy's jobs, but my paint finish is as close to perfect as I can get. Just fyi for those who may consider it. Love this channel ! Gonna buy a corner roller.
I don’t do much taping , I am a decorator, do you reckon it’s worth purchasing the internal mud applicators, flushers etc ? If you are not doing taping every day ? How would you go about getting good internals without these tools. If you had to buy one of those tools would you advise the roller is a good one if just using hand tools ? Cheers , great videos.
Great tutorials, but I must ask is drywall a common task for carpenters in Canada? Carpenters here in USA mainly frame homes, or do trim work - drywall is left for the drywall guys.
I think it depends on what type of company the carpenters work for. Builders seem to typically use drywall guys for drywall, but renovators seem to typically keep it in house. I work in renovations and we do all of own drywall work unless we are doing full house drywall jobs.
Good morning Ben. I’ve been using hand tools for finishing my small drywall jobs. I’ve been watching videos about these corner tools for a couple of years now. Could you list everything I’d need in order to set up a basic corner tool kit for myself? I’m not brand specific, and I only require entry level tools that are decent in quality. Thank you.
Look in the description of the video. There are Amazon links to everything you will need. Buy it wherever you want but you can use the links as a resource for what you need.
I have to say that these tools look great for speed and sharp corners, but when those paper tapes fail it's a nightmare, I won't use them, I use fiberglass tape which is slower but they never fail
Hey Ben, Have you come across hairline cracks in the corners after using a flusher? I wonder if this possibly occurs due to the mud shrinking in both directions at the same time vs hand coating one side at a time.
@@mitchholste5999 yeah we just run a roller and 2.5 inch angle head to plow when we tape and run a dewalt mudshot with a 3 inch head to coat. Works awesome.
What is the sandpaper grit you use for the sanding of mud on walls? I have used 120 in the past or 180, but I heard somewhere else in an instructional video that 500 or 600 is to be used?
Personally I have always just used 120 screens, and then a hand sanding sponge for any small areas. 500-600 would be for automotive polish sanding, after panting.
Could you use a banjo taper then the corner roller? Just curious? I run my mud pretty thin in it and and have always wonder about the corner roller to imbed the tape. Then use the flusher like you have done.
You have to press fairly hard. Also you need to try and make sure the bent part of the pole where the head attaches to is at 45 degrees to the angle or it will coat it out of square. As in, it leaves more mud on one side. I forgot to mention that in the video but it's very important.
My angles are done so so fast. Super taper perfect mud consistency and proper amount on tape. 2.5 inch can am flusher with creaser wheel. Press hard. No roller needed, time saved. Finish 3.5 can am, touch up 3 ways within 3-4 hours while still wet. Also the type of corner applicator has a big impact. Too many holes means lots of mud and ridges. I never get ridges with the 2 wheel 2 hole applicator. Ive tried the black diamond bte applicator from this video. It sucks. Way too much mud

The myth, the man, the legend!
You should make a channel called Vancouver Drywaller and post only carpentry videos
😂🤣🤣😂
To be fair drywall is Carpenter's work in many regions
Brilliant!
Glenn Koenig it’s true. But still funny.
Drywall is carpentry
Thank you for taking the time time to share this knowledge. 🙂

Butt joints, flats. Easy too do, and quick.
But taping corners, and mudding it is more difficult, and I find that I take forever on them. 😩
I was only kind of thinking about getting one until you said it was a blast to spray the kids with it. Summer is going to be much more fun.
I've been a hanger since the 80s but I long ago refused to finish because of corners. Thanks for explaining and demonstrating corner tools so well.
I watched many of your videos. You are a good teacher you explain things well. Thank you

Your videos are so simple and clear. Thank you!!
Compound tube and flusher is my preferred way to do corners.
You're the best. Thanks so much for sharing all your knowledge!
Keep up the great work!
nice job! definitely quicker. you explained it very well! Hoping to see some skateboarding in your vids soon
I might throw a few more tricks in some day.
Nice to see you here Maxkil! Your vids are good too!
You are both good! Thanks!

I often wondered how professionals work so fast. As an amateur I get pretty good quality, using just a knife, but I take forever.

좋은 영상 입니다!

It's always nice to be able to do both sides of the angle at the same time. Instead of hand coating then let dry then the other side lol
But why not use a bazooka then roller and glazer?. Unless the are too expensive??? Some guys arent stong enough to run the bazooka all day especially being on stilts with it.
WAIT!!!!! That corner sander. Is that a Better Then Ever tool??? I want to get that. Didn’t know it existed.
Spray knifes and metal tools with wd-40 where there always in contact with water keeps them from rusting
GREAT TIP!!! I just learned that about a year ago.

Hi, nice video...at the 1:48 time frame you show a BLUE pole with the letters USA on it. What brand of pole is this? I'd like to get one. May seem silly to most, but I go out-of-my-way to buy Blue tools etc. Thanks & I've Subscribed!
Awesome video
Very productive tools 👌
Mr. Vancouver, question, I have some USG ALL Purpose mud compound to use for taping (paper). Can I also use this for finishing? Can I add a little water to it to make more workable for filling holes and finishing? Txs for your input. Tony G
That closet is bigger than my bedroom 😆

Awesome tutorial. Perhaps you answered this but what automatic tool would you recommend for a novice if only one tool could be purchased. Thanks
Supertaper
I didn't see a link to the red Better Than Ever corner applicator you were using. I have the smaller aluminum ones you have in your links, but the longer red one you were using seems to roll easier.
Do you have any tricks to do ceiling corners when a brocade ceiling is involved, new walls with existing brocade ceiling. Thanks
I have heard that you want to run the walls with a damp rag to get the drywall dust off or the mud won't adhere very well if you sand before another coat. Ever had any problems with cracks or anything after applying mud on dusty drywall?
what is the brand of your 90 degree inside corner sander that you're using at 13:45?
I love the tools you were using. I like the one you call the mud syringe and of course the two in corner tool. I am just starting out can you help with a good selection of tool like mud syringe and the 2 in corner tool
Trying to decide on tools for corners and flats/butts. Flushers and mud boxes?
What did you use to apply mud next day over the tape? I’m looking to buy kit for corner tapping. Thank you
Angle box for me! But awesome work!
Hello Ben. good video, I was wondering what is the brand of your angled sander that screws into the sponge? because we in canada we only have one model for it's sponge and it's richard and it's not great you have to put gray tape on the sponge because the claws come to wear the sponge quickly if you go too hard so not ideal as a process to maintain the sponge in place...

Vancouver Carpenter,
Ok. Sounds great. Thank you.
Finishing corner angles with angle box and corner flusher with blades gives sharp corner angles than tube one. You have to sand less and less efforts.
He said look at that rusty knife..🤣and plugged in drills work nice to..when he forgot to plug it in..
Hey man. I'm mud framing a ceiling that has an inset for pine boards. The guys that hung it had no business doing so. Need a few pointers.
I have to say that these tools look great for speed and sharp corners, but when those paper tapes fail it's a nightmare, I won't use them, I use fiberglass tape which is slower but they never fail

Like the 30 other questions....where did you get the sander
What paddle mixer you reckon is best ?
It would be cool to do a big room wearing rollerblades.
Awesome, I’ve just got the tape pro glazer. Which way up do you run it? I’m presuming the way it sits by itself when you push it into a corner
What is the link to that corner sander you used?
We use angle heads on a MudShot. I much prefer it to a flusher.
bearded rider they round the corners too much. I use a 3’’ tape tech wing. I’ve never seen a mud applicator like his. I’ve always used a “ tube”

Where can I buy the corner sponge sander that you have on your handle?
Could you address how much pressure needs to be applied to the angle heads when smoothing mud. Looks like that pole was really being flexed. Thank you
T Willey it’s all in how it feels takes little practice
You have to press fairly hard. Also you need to try and make sure the bent part of the pole where the head attaches to is at 45 degrees to the angle or it will coat it out of square. As in, it leaves more mud on one side. I forgot to mention that in the video but it's very important.
That's too cool!
Do you have a video of how to fix cracks in dry wall?
