Inspired by Sarah Williams' poem, The Old Astronomer, this new concert work tells of the irony of life's moments; of a life long lived through joy, sadness, longing, endurance, love and so many other lessons rolled into a vessel of musical inspiration. “The shadows give perspective on things already known; and the light, although familiar, was only mine on loan. I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.” Optional cello included, this work is outstanding in text and music.

My choir is preforming this for ISSMA, and I couldn't be happier because I've always adored this song.

my whole choir class said that this song is about death and my teacher tried to say it wasn’t and we were like “no it’s definitely about death”😂

Having read the original poem, it's an old man putting his affairs in order with his student, making sure whoever or whatever comes next has their facts straight.
But he is also saying his final fairwell and pondering his own coming end.
He is ready, and has no fear of the coming journey. For he always loved the night.
So yeah, a guy is dying. But the song is about farewells and courage to face the unknown too.

I love this song very much, but that cadence at the end just didn't work for me. It didn't "come alive."

    Where is the descant?!

It’s there. It is right after brightness once a blaze. It starts with flickering away. I heard it clearly. I just wish this recording did the dynamics but besides that it is excellent.

Magolor 7 ah yeah after looking super closely I see it thanks the dynamics would have been nice my chorus group needs help with the dynamics lol

just butchered this song for MPA like a week ago. I would blame it on our conductor pulling a no-show, but we were garbage before that too. Sorry judges

Luckily, you’re a painter and not a musician.
