I know this is a year old now but thought I should chip in with a tip, if you want an instant heavier application of colour from the AK pencils, dip the tip of the pencil in water and apply.
I am a bit of a fan when it comes to AK products so I guess I'm biased but I also like the way they grouped likeminded colors, as you mentioned. Waiting out that collectors box containing all the pencils in the set. Thanks for the quality review!
Thanks Steven , I'm like AK as a company and they push the boundaries a bit with modelling which is awesome, but I own very few of their products 😃 glad you found this helpful !
Thank you for sharing your experience with these Weathering Pencils. When these just came out I was hoping they would be more easy to use, but at the end I will stick on my oils paints even if I need more practice.
Thanks for adding a comparison between them and artists pencils, I was literally about to buy the deluxe set from Amazon! I've got 2 huge tins of Cran D' Ache Supracolore Soft and luminance just sitting around so I'm going to give them a try first, I thought the AK Weathering Pencils were oil based like most AK products..
Good video. AK have a good range of colours and the lighter coloured pencils would be effective on Olive drab or darker coloured subjects. Look forward to using them as an alternate way of detailing and enhancing the model subject.
Before these came out I used Stabilo 'All' pencils. They are slightly waxy like the AK pencils and also water soluble. The only problem with the Stabilo pencils is the useful (to modellers) colour choice was limited to black, orange and a couple of brown shades.
If I remember correctly I didn't pay a lot for a whole tin of the Derwent pencils, and there are a lot of colours in it. Price per pencil was therefore very cheap!
With the vast amount of weathering products available already, even from Mig, I'm not sure where these fit in especially considering they don't seem to be very effective..
I'm going to 'invent' a 9B pencil and call it the 'Metallizer'.Better scale reflection's than paint over matt black.Perfect for gun barrel's and engine parts...when tolerances and 'metal' paint layers a problem......£9.99.
Thanks for the review! I'm a guitarist myself and really appreciate you taking the time to record the track on top of doing the review. Whats guitar gear are you rocking? I'm a Gibson guy myself.
Thanks Tim ! Yeah it was good fun ( just messing about with a mate really ) but I had to drop it in the end for a more professional result. I use a PRS Se with bare knuckle pups and an orange rocker 50 head and cab with gt75s, this was hover recorded straight into a laptop with free vsts
@@lpjmodels oh Oranges are sweet! I had an AD30 and really enjoyed it but have since went digital via a Line 6 Helix rack with a Friedman FRFR setup. What BKP do you have in the PRS? I have Aftermaths in my Kiesel and they're great for shreddy stuff.
Yeah I'm a big fan of orange, they have that mid presence that you just need for cutting through the mix when playing metal without the harsher Marshall cut. Jim root had such a great sound with some of the later slipknot stuff, so that was the reason I went for the rocker. I'm using a pair of miracle mans (men?) I'd get an American prs but the SE is such a solid guitar for the pricepoint, despite being Korean it's made very well. I had my eyes on a baked maple neck SE with a floyd for a bit more fun. Digital these days is getting crazy good, I dont blame people for switching over, I wouldn't use enough of the features though ! I need a more dedicated metal guitar but the action and speed of my prs neck is bonkers anyway.
Great video. I was considering getting some of these but watching your video i think i will stick to oils and pastels and dedicated weathering washes. I may in the future try a couple of the darker ones like streaking grime and dark earth. Like you said they do look a bit too subtle. I mainly do aircraft models and have a few silver and grey watercolour pencils in different makes mainly for chipping. Thanks for sharing.
The AK pencils aren't cheaper when your wife already owns a 96 piece Derwent set! :D Thanks for the video - great stuff. I'm off to the wife's studio now...
I will try thank you for the comment. It's quite tricky using a phone , if it's too close I knock it making it wobble and the digital zoom isn't very good.
@@lpjmodels No, just enough to soak the tip. I normally use an airbrush jar with a little window cleaner. soak the tip for 30 seconds. Window cleaner will not attack the wood, but will make it nice and shinny.
A useful video, but I'm afraid I had to switch the sound off as the guitar noise was doing my head in. As we all have different tastes I prefer no music at all. :-)
@Dicus D the result is slightly complicated. Whilst the ak pencils are very good and a good price the lighter colours didn't cover as well as I would have hoped. They all works quite well as well, the ak are slightly better because the price is good for good quality and the sets are useful, but the coverage of the derwent and Faber castel pencils were better
Seems like alot of effort for overly subtle effects. I bought the rust set so will see how I go but not holding my breathe that i will use on a permanent basis
I love them they are amazing he not using them Correctly its better to wet the end of the pencil you can do it his way but it for light effects. Get one and try it you will love them

That's the main benefit of these sets, useful shades. Otherwise it's all personal preference.
Nicely executed review, and I appreciate the comparison with the Derwent pencils...as I already have a set of those I will stick with them for now!
Thanks a lot ! The only way I find they beat the derwent artists was on price, otherwise fairly neck and neck in terms of usability e.t.c

The surface must be satin to use pencils?
But how to seal them? Varnish?
I think you're supposed to dip the pencils in water first. Thats what they show on the official AK channel.
It kinda seems like this can be done with less steps with traditional paint or selective application of washes
Do you seal the weathering in with another Matt coat?
Hi, good review.
But can you PLEASE zoom in so we can see what u doing!
Thanks.

Great review, thanks mate.
Do you put any clear coat before pencil weathering?
Very nice review and video quality!
Many thanks mate !
If you soak the pencil tip in window cleaner like Windex or 409 (that has a little ammonia) it will turn the pencil into a watercolor paint brush.
And ruin the wood housing whilst your at it
@@lpjmodels No, just enough to soak the tip. I normally use an airbrush jar with a little window cleaner. soak the tip for 30 seconds. Window cleaner will not attack the wood, but will make it nice and shinny.

I feel as if you varnish over the pencil work it'll all disappear
This is something you'll find with pigments but not with anything that's actually a paint.

The trouble with wetting the pencil is the wood eventually saturates and falls to bits . They aren't bad though

$3 a pencil, I don't think so............
The outragous shipping price got me

Да ! You can use any brand but the artists or AK modelling ones give you an advantage over student quality pencils.
You're using it wrong. You need to dip the end of the pencil in water first, before using it.
This is incorrect. Dipping the pencil will compromise the wood and render them eventually useless..
