    Damn this LT is so lit lmao. Experienced 3 different uniforms. Has so much prior experience. These are the LT's that we need in the military. The ones that have the experience and intelligence from being in for so long and sharing past experiences to further educate mentors and peers. You shouldn't need just a degree in order to come in as an officer. Best of luck in your career sir. Thank you for the video

      bprodigy25 Thanks for all that, man. It’s been an interesting 14 years, to say the least. You mention 3 uniforms, how about 3 presidents? LOL
      I do know my biggest shortcoming is I don’t think I’m like how I am in this video as much as I should be at the shop with my Airmen-you know, helpful and sharing experiences. I never figured out how to best approach them now that I’m both new to them and new to being an O. I know it’s not too late, though.

    I know how you feel man. I was in the army and when we switched from UCP to OCP it was awesome. It really does have more of a "military" look to it. The army's UCP and air force's ABU tiger stripe pattern never should have been approved in the first place.

    • @Retired_LT
      @Retired_LT  6 лет назад +5

      Jared Davies I’ll never forget reading on the web site of the contractor that designed the ABU pattern how embarrassed they were that of all the patterns they developed, the least tactical of them all was adopted by the AF.

      Eh, the ABU wasn’t absolutely horrid. This is one million times superior however. Tiger stripe with different colors would have worked but the OCP being a play in the most effective camo we ever used (m81) makes me like it even more. During a sim exercise, opfor was wearing OCP and we were wearing M81. Not only did FF happen because they’re such similar patterns, but I have to say, in all, it’s the most effective at breaking up the human body at distances. There were moments we literally couldn’t see people only meters from us, firing right at us. Pics up close from the event had our arms blending into the woodland surrounding MOUT

    I joined the AF in 1977 and at that time we were wearing the 100% cotton utility uniforms with the blue & white name tags and chevrons along with the colorful MAJCOM patches that were sewn on our shirt pockets along with the blue & white "missiles badge" or "combat crew badge" that certain career fields awarded after serving. The 100% cotton utility uniforms were very comfortable and they were cool in the summer and warm in the winter. We also were wearing the soon to be phased out khaki uniforms or "1505's" which they were commonly called. I served for 20 years and retired. As far as I'm concern the air force should go back to the uniforms that I wore in 1977. The air force is not considered a ground combat unit and wearing these hideous OCP's or ABU uniforms are to be worn only by the marines and the army since they are a ground combat unit. A lot of ex-AF vets agreed with me in the past since they also wore they same uniform that I wore.

    Hey Lt, I've been in since 1984, loved the woodland camo, hated the ABU tiger stripe nonsense, and love my OCP! Good news, you can wear the flag your mom gave you till 01 June 2020! "Current subdued black and green (cloth) U.S. flags may be worn until 1 June 2020, then spice brown will be the only accepted version" - AFI 36-2903, 28 Sep 2018. Enjoy your officer career, I'm enjoying it now, but still feel like an NCO!

    I always liked how the AF had ranks on collars or sleeves. Made saluting easy when I ran into AF personnel. With the giant Velcro on the shoulders I don’t see how the AF can’t do something similar. You’re right when you make the point that identifying ranks will be difficult with that brown color. Good luck with that. Don’t see why you couldn’t wear the normal flag while in garrison like we did.

  • @JM-gz1ej

    The current OCP looks very good and seems to be a cool evolution from the wood land pattern. Hope they keep it long enough. There is really no point keep making changes every few years if a given pattern is proven to be truly useful but I am glad they have been moving away from those digital patterns foolishness, i.e. digital patterns have no relationship with camo effect.

    • @TommyNitro
      @TommyNitro 6 лет назад

      I think the changes to the OCP were a necessity. The army and AF were getting guys/gals killed because their stupid former patterns (made to look more cool than to actually work) were getting people killed.

    Also, if you want to save some dough, you can reuse your subdued/green/sage patches if you soak them in bleach for a couple/few days, the colors change and it works for OCP...just be careful and monitor them regularly as different bleaches change the colors at different rates. Also, not all patches/colors will turn the correct colors. Try at your own risk.

    • @Retired_LT
      @Retired_LT  4 года назад +1

      Alexander Hutchinson There is nothing regarding shirts and boots having to match in the AFI. Coyote brown boots are the only authorized boot and the sand tee is, FOR NOW, an acceptable color next to tan and CB. I say “for now” because the sand and tan-color tee will no longer be authorized June 1, 2020. 36-2903, para. 5.5.

    My only gripe is that if you are in an MOS that requires you to actually do work or be engaged physically (think PJ, CCT, TACP, etc.), the velcro patches are lost too damn easy. They DO NOT stay on worth shit. I lost a lot of patches so I now sew everything on...I recommend sewing everything from the get go. The money you think you save by not having to sew stuff on is negated by the costly patch replacement. Velcro pockets are also a no go...too loud.

      Scorpion is the code name for the pattern. The uniform is referred to as OCP for now. It could become Airman something-something Uniform in the future, but concerning shopping online for rank or nametapes, most places seem to be using OCP.

      From what I understand, there is no difference. The Air Force is adopting the Army’s uniform pattern, so what they wear is what we will wear. Prepare to read a bit:
      It was a lot shorter for me than most. I submitted my paperwork to the June 2017 board after spending all of May and a little of April gathering required paperwork and meeting with CCs. Results were published in Sep 2017 and I was slated to ship out, so to speak, Sep of this year. OTS was apparently backed up a full year! However, my wife and I became pregnant in Oct, so when Dec rolled past and we were in the clear with viability and what not, I contacted Officer Accessions at Randolph AFB and just asked if there were any slots open sooner than Sep because we were due in July. Much rather get OTS outta the way, miss part of the pregnancy, than bounce and leave the wife with a 5 week old. Turned out there was an opening in the April 2018 class, so I was attending and graduating OTS one year from when I first began the prices and uploaded my application pack.
      A friend of mine that was picked up waited a whole lot longer because the board pushed results back nearly 8 months-for whatever reason. He applied around June 2016, results were due that Sep, but were pushed to May 2017! He eventually left Jan 2018. Clearly, results may vary.

    Officer Mitchell - great video on the Air Force’s new OCP. I’m currently in the process of commissioning with U.S.A.F. to become an aviator from Harvard (civilian), but I absolutely HATE the ugly OCP.
    They are much better than the old ABU, hands-down. But the whole color palette and design of the camouflage is unappealing.
    I’m also commissioning with the U.S. Marine Corps as an aviator. Just took both the ASTB-E and AFOQT (USAF). Now working on PT scores. But the USMC’s digitalized uniform is just outstanding.
    Why did the Air Force not follow the Marine Corps’ example? The digital pattern is light-years ahead of the other ugly patterns out there.
    [Putting] the other myriad of factors aside, uniforms will be a deciding factor if I am approved by both Boards. This video helped.

    2903 wasn't completely updated...anything OCP is only a guidance memorandum. It'll be jacked up for a while, just like the ABU roll-out. I remember my first pair of ABUs were pink and blue hued. And the flag can be basically any reverse embroidered spice brown criteria US flag. Even the one with the OCP background (literally spice brown stripes over an OCP background with whatever cream# is in the criteria on the border) follows the GM...which is what I was issued a long while ago, and will wear until official AFI is rolled out.

    • @Retired_LT
      @Retired_LT  6 лет назад

      I have to respectfully disagree. The front page of the GM says it “immediately changes” the AFI. You’re correct-the AFI will be continually reviewed and revised, but the AFI accessible via AFPC’s site is the rule of the land.

      The current guidance states that "Airmen may wear other services' qualification badges, if earned and awarded, i.e. Ranger tab, Air Assault or Pathfinder. Award criteria for other services’ qualification badges will be in accordance with the awarding service’s directives. Sister service and joint badges can be worn in their current color configuration and will not be converted to the spice brown color criteria." That being said, the jump wings are an AF qual as well, so they can be spice. Sounds ridiculous if you ask me... Spice occupational badge/wings and a black AASLT or PF badge? 🤨

    A word to the wise: Get everything sewn on. The new OCP patches have shorter hooks than the ACU did and will literally fall off of the uniform without you noticing. In case you get the best possible contact on the Velcro, the outer ends of the nametapes will still pop up, and grab on to the shoulder Velcro whenever you do any reaching. It's as bad a design oversight as getting your backpack strap hooked on the pens in your sleeve... Sewed-on looks better, and performs better. Setup cost is a negative, but if you care about utility or appearance, ditch as much Velcro as possible.

      By the way, props to the USAF for making patrol cap rank for officers only. That's going to deconflict when saluting enlisted to officer. Officer to officer, good luck lol. • @Retired_LT
      @Retired_LT  6 лет назад +1

      That's a good question that the AFI doesn't really clarify. It states "A one piece Tan 499 rigger style, nylon, web belt will be worn with OCP trousers," but when you Google it, you get belts that look like the current sand belt worn with the ABU *and* the darker, coyote belts. The coyote belts match the darker shirts, so that's what I'm going with until I'm corrected. I'm hoping the AF releases more literature soon. They have to know may of us are chomping at the bit to wear a real military uniform again.
      Here's the link to the extra--large, stupid-long belt I bought: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019MT7MA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
