Very nice effect here, and well explained. I'll mention one ice trick: If you drop superglue from a few inches into water, it will set almost instantly into quite nicely random icicle shapes. (Vary the height to vary the effect.) Then just glue into place on your base or dio.

Um, sorry if I'm being a bit thick here, but I got through 3 or 4 tubes of Superglue and all I got were some lumps on the bottom of the container. 2 misshapen blobs hung from the top but the rest were just going nowhere! What am I doing wrong? Do you use a particular brand of Superglue? Mine were all from the 'super-cheap' outlets - maybe that's where I went wrong? The water I used (it being a hot day 'n'all!) was from the cold tap but not icy.
Love it. Great idea with the cling wrap. Here’s an idea. Based on how the colors turned out near the bank, I bet using the white paint in resin technique spread in a really thin layer over a deep blue would make the white blue translucent effect seen in glacier type ice.
Awesome video! Thank you! I've been building Frostgrave terrain a lot lately and now I'm kicking myself for not thinking of using the cling wrap and resin to make cracked ice! I've been pouring the resin with white paint and then building up faux ice chunks with gloss medium, which takes FOREVER and you can't get the sharp angles I wanted... You're saving me HOURS of time and effort!
Don't think I would do anything different not too familiar with resin. Your work is top shelf sir ! Love the videos you posted on you tube. Hope to see you back in the future . Till then cheers!

Up until this video I had always shred away from resins due to lack of info & used Vallejo’s water effect instead. But on large areas that’s expensive. Not any more. Thanks for this series of videos. I’ll be using that tip on shaping the water with an airbrush this evening.
I started out watching Luke Towan. Love his work but I'm thinking there is no way I can be that OCD when I'm building. You're WAY more my style but you still maintain similar quality to him. I definitely enjoy both.

This came out brilliantly! Its a shame that no one seemed willing to help; as you said, just sharing information isn't going to take anything away from their business (assuming it was business related). I've yet to play around with any ice effects like these myself, but this is definitely an inspiration. In all actuality, your final look reminded me very much of the "ice sheets" they sell at Precision Snow and Ice, just an easier DIY version. I'm most definitely interested in seeing more videos like this on a variety of subjects; I shall rack my brain and see if I can come up with any cool suggestions.
Great vid. For cracked ice I use clear rock candy crackle effect paint by holtz. Just paint a thick layer on and it cracks while drying (like the GW basing paints but clear) a quick white drybrush on the edges and it looks ace. Done several frozen ponds etc by applying it over water effects.
Great job Luke! You should look at D.M. Scotty's ice features. He works on a smaller scale, but he does some really good work and doesn't mind sharing. And like you, he tries to use inexpensive materials whenever he can.
I was assembling some GW tyranids for a friend and he had me assemble the exocrine leaving the haruspex head and claws which he’s let me take to use in a diorama. My idea was to model it coming out of a swamp or something but I’m thinking it might be a good idea to have it coming through the ice at the edge of a lake or something to eat a marine or something. I’m going to give that a go and see what I can pull off. This stuff really helps Luke
Nice! didn't think of cling film i used greaseproof! definitely another effect to remember!... when i did mine i did clear, clear with tin foil beneath (about 8mm of resin) which gave a nice clear reflective hue to the resin... (when i say clear i did a 6inch tile and added a few drops of blue printer ink to the resin for a sky blue sheen). For my 2nd experiment i added some fine snow flock to the resin (really eyeballed it) and it wound up looking like really packed ice or permafrost! if i can find the tests i did i'll chuck a picture on the facebook group! Good Stuff!!!

That looks beautiful! Especially when you poured in the white-tinted resin. I got ice no tricks to share, I only started building a few weeks ago, got a good tree trunk technique worked out - if you're interested in not making them from several yards of wire :P

Running a Christmas themed one shot D&D game this month for our group. Wish I had a lot more time to prepare some encounters with some really cool ice and snow terrain pieces. Keep up the great work you do! Love learning and seeing new techniques.
I really really like that effect. Nice work! I've been playing with water effects and have turned to your videos for help before, so thanks for that. When I've attempted ice effects before I was doing a frozen ocean so I layered the resin on thick over saran wrap. After it was set I used a jigsaw to cut it the way I liked and glued the pieces in place before back filling the gaps with more resin. It looked good but I think next time I'm going to use your method of mixing white paint in instead of an ink. Anyway, great job!
Great final results! Can't wait for more series like this! Would love to see some sci-fi! Doing alot of 40k terrain soon, would be neat to see stuff like this mixed with buildings/industrial/military/etc!
Not sure if you’ve had this tip yet but paraffin wax looks really convincing as frozen ice. You can melt it and fiddle with it as well. Lots of great tips though with what you’ve shown so far.
Loved this build Luke, inspired me to have a go at my first diorama, all be it on a much smaller scale. As mentioned in the vid, it would be great to see some other versions, keep up the awesome work
@@GeekGamingScenics Glad to hear that Luke. When I cut foam board I still use a safety ruler, and I was a joiner for over 30 years lol. Value my digits to much, perhaps a warning to the not so experienced then .
I'm amazed that I have some knowledge that may make your life easier when using hot glue. Run a little isopropyl along the hot glue join, capillary action will pull the iso into the join and it will simply release. The guys that make model aircraft out of foam board when repairing crashed models

Looks spot on . I stippled the mod podge on thicker not worrying about full coverage then blow it in pulses to give more splits between the waves.
