    Well done both. Its a tough first few days. I tried in 2021, but had to drop out in Shap. Learned the hard way about how important being ultralight is, especially if you have achilles issues. After replanning and cutting down my pack weight significantly, I went back in May 2022, and smashed it in 10 days and loved every minute! Top tip for next time now youve done this first section...from St Bees take a direct route to Ennerdale Bridge via the cycle trail, cutting out Dent. Go around the lake via the left side, rather then the official route (its practically flat, and mich easier if you'recarrying weight). If you're wild camping you can push on to past Black sail hut for the end of Day 1. Which means you can make it through Rothswaite and into Grasmere on day 2. It makes the hardest part so much easier!

    Nothing is a failure, you got out there and had a go, many don't or they know better. Respect you made a step, it's a very hard walk done it in 10 days and very tough, a few times your mind screams at you to give up.

    Disagree with it being a failure, it's not something you ever did before, even all the prep you can't anticipate what will happen with a challenge like that. You succeeded at what you did manage, you succeeded at learning for next time (always valuable for big challenges) if you're able to do it again, and it's not like this is an every day hike. Health is most important at the end of the day. ❤️

    Just picking this up guys! Not a failure at all......a learning curve. It's really obvious advice BUT play around with weight. I crossed in ten days during august 2023 and I had 6 kg including a litre of water at any time. This included tent, sleeping bag, mat and clothes. Just the basics. I dropped in 3 hotels/ air B n bs throughout the trip to dry clothes, freshen up etc and it worked really well 😊

    3 weeks today (2/9) I go - I'm slackpacking - guide, hotels, luggage transfers each day - so no big bags. The section you have done is my regular stomping ground as I live in the area - I walk round Ennerdale t least once a year and the southern path is very difficult under foot - northern path longer but much easier walking - when I walked up out of Ennerdale b4 I described it to friends like taking the path out of Mordor. Nothing you can do about injuries - get fit, get the practice miles in with the pack ON - there are several companies that do luggage transfers if you go B&B to B&B. Chances are you'll not get the same weather - it is rather rare to see sun like that!! Better luck next time.

      Good luck with the C2C! I went round the Northern side of Ennerdale Water; very happy with that particular life choice!

    Ey up 👍….. Brilliant video….. A tough and emotional decision to throw the towel in …. I had a similar experience doing the WHW … Fortunately for me and my lass taking a full day off and coming up with a new plan… We completed it…. You have both made the right decisions on this one👍… I look forward to seeing you back to take on the Coast to coast agin… Great channel 👍👍👍

    I feel your pain I failed a month ago with knee problems..
    I got over excited and walked all the way to black sail hut on the first day with a similar pack weight...
    The second day coming in to honester slate mine down that massive hill .
    I couldn't put any weight on my right leg .
    I was devastated..
    Good luck on next year .
    I'll be trying again when I'm fit .
    But with nothing over 10kg or less if I can

    Well done on your decision. I've failed a few big hikes and then come back and completed them. You haven't failed until you give up and you're already learning lessons from it so you'll be more experienced for next time. All the best for your next attempt!

    I am really sorry you could not complete your planned Coast to Coast Hike. I first tackled this in 1997 at the age of 40 and carried 30 kg for 10 days to complete the C2C. I returned again on my 60th Birthday, carrying the same weight but that took me two days longer than the first attempt. DO NOT GIVE UP try and try again. I will admit that the only other LDP I have tackled was the Pennine Way in 1976 and completed that in 12 days, prior to joining the Army. Good Luck for you future Hikes.     It takes a big man (and woman) to admit defeat but you both live to walk another day.
    The miles you’ve covered so far looked awesome and I wish you better luck for your next attempt 🤞

    Yours is an interesting experience, more interesting than the many hero accounts. It’s not easy, travelling heavy.

    Absolutely not a failure at all. It’s not a race or a competition but a journey to be enjoyed as you see fit. Some UK LDF I have done in sections over weeks or months and the most wonderful South West Coastal Path; 630 odd miles , every fortnight over a number of years . I need to pick it up at Polperro and finish in Poole Harbour to complete at some stage

    Not a failure. I aborted the Hadrian’s Wall crossing thanks to the sudden arrival of a painful kidney stone. Spending a few days in hospital in Newcastle was a bit memorable though and, as someone said, was all part of a different ‘journey’ experience. I finished it the following year and I’m sure you’ll complete the C2C next time.

    hi to 2 both . so sorry to hear about the news. I did an alternative c2c, not the wainwright 1, twice, but going east to west, so the lakes were at the end. You might consider this 1.Or if Jon has problem again, maybe cycle it. alt

    Multi-day backpacking is hard!! …. You see folks on RUclips doing big miles in their thru hikes etc but practically for mere mortals you have to set your sights on lower miles at the start….. say 8 or 10 miles per day on the first three days … that breaks in the legs and over the next few days you’ll find your miles will slowly start to increase to say 15 or even 20 miles a day. Also you need to get your pack weights down to something more manageable … not necessarily Ultra light but say a max of 25 to 30 pounds. Or conversely you set aside more time to complete it … it was interesting to hear you say “we wanted to make up the distance” on just the second day … and obviously in the talk you had realized that maybe you were trying to do too much…. Anyhoo … you totally did the right thing getting off the trail when you did your injury could have resulted in a fall… you know what you have to do to succeed and whether you start where you left off or back at the beginning I’m sure you’ll do it next time … ATB 👍👍

    No fail, just a new experience. Do limit the amount and weight of your packs, it is a long distance walk, loads of food stops on the way. Limit yourself to dry clothes and wet clothes. Weigh everything, if the empty pack weighs more than a 1k+( recommend under 50lts) then change it. All these things will save your joints, muscles and feet.

    To start the C2C on the same day as you travelled up, and make it to Rosthwaite by Day 2 with those packs is an awesome achievement. No way is it a failure! The C2C is there waiting for you to return… just pick up from where you left off and do consider using Packhorse or Sherpa to move your kit from destination to destination… I didn’t until I got to Kirkby Stephen and the enjoyment factor of just day-packing went up immensely!

    I had to tap out of the Cleveland Way with about 13 miles to go this spring. My feet were absolutely ruined.
    I went back and completed it in September. Weirdly now doesn’t feel as though there was a break. If it’s easier for you to start again where you finished last time, do that.

    Homemadewandurlust has tips . She had achilirs plantar fastidis. Switch trail runners. With dr Scholl insoles. I got some Hoka 1 with heavy duty dr Scholl. May help achillied takes while 2 heal. Fe sleep bag 600g 25 quid Amazon is ok. 17kg is alot. To carry. Alpkit nuno pad is about 350g only £40,

    To fail is to not even start. Think of this as a minor set back and be kind to yourselves, with a load on your back it is probably better to plan on an overnight at St Bees and shorter hops, 8 miles, in the lakes and enjoy the journey rather than stressing out trying to do 15 plus miles. Later 15 plus miles are possible. Best of luck to you both!

    ailure is when you give up walking completely I've done c to c a number of times last year I was going east to west and came off at kirby Steven twice I've finished ironically in the same place within a few miles it's the disappointment that gets you thinking of other people's thoughts People won't feel less of you because you're had the courage to make the start and also plan a return I've plans to restart at kirby to st bees on 14 th October and quite excited as still going west to saint bees I've had loads of coming off routes over the years being fed up is the worst feeling when you get home and regret your decision wishing you were still there I've had a so called medical diagnosed Spained ankle felt dissapointed to find out 14 weeks later it was a broken tibia you are right to think of you health first Anyway look forward to many years of distance walking and your continued coast to coast walk One bit of advice is if you restart the walk walk on the left hand side of ennerdale its flat you've done the horrible bit before Kev

    No you should start it again, it will kill you mentally if you realise that you got 13% in took a year off and then started it again where you left off, the idea is to start from one coast and get to the other coast

    A 17kg pack? What were you carrying? That's far too heavy. You could half that.

      Oh I packed all my fears! But no we went far to heavy on med kits, cooking stuff, food, extra clothes, just OTT in several areas - Jon

      @@jonandlivgoonahike4287IMO there’s a sweet spot between the expense and gram-counting that accompanies ultralight gear, and bringing enough items to make the trip more enjoyable. I have a small folding camp chair that adds another 1kg to my pack weight…but boy, do I appreciate having somewhere comfy to sit on long hikes!
