For anyone being discouraged by smant’s crazy time, remember he does games for a living and probably plays hours every day, it’s kinda his job to be good at it
Not really anything to do with his job, even he if wasn't really a streamer he would still do well. He's simply built different.

Practice makes improvement but people probably don’t have as much time on their hands to get better so watching that might be a slap to their face but you’re right, he’s dang good, lots of cred

My favorite creator and one of my favorite games. I absolutely love it.
It's one of my favorites too but, to be fair, in this day and age with the way games handle their player base and money.
There isn't THAT much competition for an honest good game anymore...

The reality is that with the number of games released each week, there are amazing games coming out all the time, you just can't see al of them. Sure, there are a lot of AAA games that release that suck, but there are so many great games released all the time if you look for them.

Not joking. Path of Pain took me 24 hours total over 2 days to complete first time. Most of the time spent in the last room. Spent maybe 12 hours trying to get through it.
A total of 20 hours in, I finally got past the room and died at the last fight against the two knights, where I took a break for the day.
The second day, last 4 hours was me getting back to that spot and finally beat the knights. Felt so incredibly satisfying.
This was my first ever MetroidVania. I'm very much NOT experienced in these type of games. I'm not even good at the 2D Mario games, so beating this (even if it DID take up >25% of my playthrough) was immensely satisfying~
It probably took me a similar amount of time my first try, now I can reliably beat it in like 5 minutes, experience counts, 20 minutes on his first try is godlike.
Died at the guards on my first time to, spent about 3,5 hours. Havent completed it. Some day, although it's been 4 years. It's path of pain and Pantheon of Hallownest that i havent completed. Cant seem to beat Abs Radiance no matter how hard I try. I have spent 100 hours in godhome, and it just hurts... Still its my favorite game
Playing 24 hours out of 48 is not healthy and lowers your gaming skills. You'd have taken half the time if you had taken more breaks.
@@autarch6376 Absrad took me like three-four hours to beat for the first time on attuned, another couple hours to get comfortable enought for pantheon of hallownest(where I actually first tried her). However, then I spent like 15 hours grinding ascended over a couple weeks, with no success. I gave up for months, then when I came back to the game, I managed to do her fairly quickly. Still took me another 10 hours for radiant.
Somehow, after all of this, I still occasionnally feel compelled to open my main save file and just fight her on attuned a few times, and I have a lot of fun each time, despite how much I legit despised her fight in ascended/radiant.

that's 23 minutes exactly, and he faded out (got hit and had to restart to a standing point) 65 times.
he did get hit 69 times in total though lol [one bug hit at 3:31:49 three hits at 3:40:17]

if it's any consolation tho he does technically get hit 69 times if you count the one bug hit at 3:31:49 and the three hits at 3:40:17

I cant describe how mad I am that Smant beat it that quickly. My first attempt took me SO DAMN LONG. Some people really are just built differently.
Speedrunners are built differently, is what I've learned from watching SmallAnt and fireb0rn
@@BurritoInTheMist Sometimes I forget that Smallant is a speedrunner, if not a Hollow Knight Speedrunner.
Experience and life situations matter as well. White Palace took me about 3 hours when the game first released and PoP took an hour. I grew up with video games but never tried to go beyond enthusiast level. This guy clearly has a foundation in problem solving and speedrunning that allows him to observe and experiment differently than most.
@@thorinhannahs4614 exactly, I'm sure there's a level of quick problem solving going on in his head, either consciously or unconsciously. As a speed runner he's able to make small adjustments to his inputs in real time, after fully absorbing the games mechanics. The first time I did PoP it took 2-3 hours of intense concentration and keeping my rage under control, then I beat the guards at the end with 1 hit point left... lol. Unlike me he's streaming his gameplay to heaps of people, he's totally calm under pressure and that is an enormous advantage too.
I thought I did it fast, my first attempt took 42 minutes and he almost halfed my time with a lot less hours on the game
dunno why chat is malding so hard lol, tanner is exactly the audience that this part of the game caters to. patience, an actual understanding of the game mechanics, the ability to strike a balance between "let me try this a few times" and "okay that's not working, what else can i do". and speedrunners gonna speedrun skip, when you have that mindset for games the skips just jump out at you as something to try. he could probably be competitive if he decided to seriously take hk up as a speed game (or would be fun to just learn some of the major categories casually).
also, the panic pause while falling down to kingsmoulds at the end of pop was hilarious xD we've all done that lol
I was looking at chat and for the most part everyone was just pogging out of their minds, I don't know what kind of person gets mad at someone for being too good at the game.
I didn’t really see any speedrun skips or chat getting mad though, I remember in Charlie’s chat it happened quite a few times and his chat is just awful but none here
Another reason I always have chat blocked lol, really is the shittiest thing of twitch.

Where are you saying he used a skip, most of his routing on PoP was normal except for not using c-dash in the room before lever, was it outside PoP?

@@liamconn35 he used c-dash isma tear skip twice which is pretty difficult
little tip. Place a dream gate at the start of the flower quest. Without actually taking the quest, walk along the path and clear out all the enemies. Once you've done so, warp to the dream gate and walk the flower through the cleared path.
Better tip, sit at a bench near the end of the quest, get the flower and quit out then reload. Practically allready there

@@Matrix-yj4vm oh that would make sense, I just remembered doing it for giving it to the optional bugs
I mean the flower quest isn't that bad. Just use the charms weaversong, grim child, glowing womb, unbreakable strength, and Grubberfly's elegy (you have to overcharm). The first 3 charms will attack for you and kill most of the monsters, while the last two allow you to attack hard at a distance.
Only took me 2 tries with this loadout.
Also taking the tram helps.

Played this in the background as I tried the very last section of path of pain over and over… finally got it!
I beat every thing else in about 15/20 minutes but the final one took me 20/25
(Last part is rough)
Took me 3 hours, I was not going to quit. My switch started freezing.
It's honestly ridiculous, how good you are at video games. Congrats on clearing Path of Pain so quickly. Insane!

When I did the path of pain I got to the end and I was thinking "So where's stage two?" and was very relieved to find out there wasn't.
I was just finishing up the other Hollow Knight VOD when this was posted, but SmallAnt is currently streaming Mario Odyssey but with the Twitch Controls mod (By Amethyst-szs) so HOLY COW is my content plate full rn. Not that I mind. I have plenty of things to watch now. Huzzah!

for the ones that doesn't know, Grimm's health is based of your Nail upgrades and Masks count, so getting pure nail may be a bad idea for Grimm
Have you ever heard of grubsong start with max soul with all three canisters full and soul twister and shaman stone put with abyss shriek you that during his starting phase where he spams fireballs and you got a killed grimm with a pure nail and full masks (This is how I beat Grimm so I know it works)
Speaking of bosses Smant's battle with Nosk that started around 47:18 are you able to use abyss shriek when he is in the roof? (If this is true then nosk is easier than lost kin)

After playing Celeste, PoP honestly doesn’t look that bad.

i beat every chapter except farewell in celeste and pop was still a bit of a struggle
After I beat farewell and then play pop it wasnt easy but it wasn't hard took me like 20-30 minutes. But if you hadn't gone through all of Celeste before doing pop I can understand how it could be really hard.
It's definitely pretty bad, but Celeste does win in overall difficulty

I've been made aware that there were enemies at the end beforehand. So I didn't die.
So I’m super happy for you, this was a treat to be able to watch you do this but just white palace took me over five hours AFTER watching a guide
It took me +8h to finish Path of Pain and SmallAnt did it in 23 mins that is so embarrassing. And for me the Hive blood was such a life changer
I was on the last room of PoP, and I was SO close to getting through it. I was 16, and i was up past my bedtime, but my parents had generously let me stay up two hours later. Once it had been two hours, my dad powered off my computer, and I lost all my progress. Naturally, I cried out in shock, rage, and frustration. My dad understood, and tried to send me to bed so I could cool off, but then my mom lectured me for an extra 45 minutes for my a t t i t u d e.

Way easier the sekond time through my dood. Fist time through it took me 2- 3 and half hours. To get to the last room . i was beat by then . second time to the last room was 10 to 15 mins. But last room still took me 4 hrs

Took me over an hour on my first try for Path of Pain, and i thought that was totally blazing fast. I don't play video games for a living, but still - 20 minutes is insanely fast! Great work! That's even faster than my second time through.
Your last vid is actually what pushed me through the lost kin fight, settled in for a long series of losses and surprised myself when I won after about 15 minutes, it helps that dream fights don't require you to come back from a bench

I've been playing celeste so much recently, and even though I also play hollow knight a lot, my first thought was that as soon as he spawned in he should have hyper'd to the left.
Smant should start learning the speedrun for this, It would be genuinely interesting to watch.

I havent played many platformers myself but now that i have tried hk PoP i know its difficult. Im able to consistently clear it in like 10 minutes now but still this is very impressive for a first try. Love the hk content so keep it up!
I love how people who say they can do it in 10 minutes after many other goes say that around 20 minutes is good. Lmaaaoooo yeah it probably took you guys at least over an hour on your very first go and you're able to do it very fast now cos of how many other goes you've had! This is his first attempt. It's insanely impressive.

I just beat this yesterday after about 3 days of on and off trying. I will now enjoy watching someone else suffer through what I did lol
I love platformers so seeing something like this in a more combat-based game was awesome. I got to the very end of path of pain in about 2 hours then died in the most tragic way. I killed both of the enemies at the end but then right before I killed the last enemy he had thrown his weapon and it boomeranged back and killed me… after I had cleared the area. I just sat there speechless and silently speedran back to the final section in 15 minutes then took another 20 minutes to complete the last section for the second time. I luckily did much better when killing the two enemies and was able to complete the path of pain

Honestly, it’s validating to see someone so incredibly good at video games also struggle with this. I gave up on Path of Pain. White Palace was hard enough for me. Maybe one day I’ll try it again.
Fan theory. The sadists built this as a sign of friendship with the masohists. In The Path of Pain, both groups benefit. At the end of the road we meet the King of Sadists - King of Hollownest and his son Masohist King - the Hollow Knight.

Bah, because of the infinite soul statues, all I did was go in with my normal combat setup and just sorta suffer through it. The only issue with that is that the mark of pride is part of that, which means you need to time your pogos in certain places where you wouldn’t normally have to time it, like low ceiling areas. Also for those who see this and haven’t yet, don’t use sharp shadow while platforming, especially in places like the white palace, unless you give yourself time to get used to it, because it actually extends the length of your dash, but only when you shade dash

First time I did this it took me 5 hours
I remember doing rad it took me so long I beat after 112 to get the speed run achievement faster than p5 and was surprised how easy it is shows how people can become so much better at a game
