After playing with the golden ratio function on my Strymon DIG, I wanted to know more about it.
So I made the complete task of gathering all the info and calculation needed to recreate the golden ratio with my current delay pedals.
If you were looking for the best way to stack delays for the fullest swells, look no further!
Hope you won't be too confused with all those numbers (but I'm sure you'll like the sounds!).

The less scenic route is - if you wish to determine the delay time of the shorter delay multiply the longer delay value by 0.618 (inverse of 1.618) - if determining the delay time of the longer delay multiply the shorter delay value by 1.618. No matter what units. No need to do any unit conversion calisthenics. Ratios are unit agnostic. e.g. 60 bpm x 0.618 = 37.08 bpm. Cheers.

On the faster tempos give it the most amazing dreamy pseudo reverb sound, very useful.

This is interesting but you would have to apply the golden ratio to the amplitude of the second delay pedal also. For each repeat on the 1st pedal the 2nd pedal would have to decrease in amplitude by the golden ratio to create that spiral effect. You could cause it to increase but you would run out of headroom very quickly.
This would need some clever algorithm. At the moment you just have 2 delay lines running in parallel with equal volume creating a repeating skipping effect.

    • @Apopheniomind
      @Apopheniomind 4 года назад

I will place a phaser effect with panning to my 6 parallel delays times ... and a spiral delay/reverb effect can be created. You could apply an "Auto-filter" effect too...

I had a pigtronix echolution that had a preset for golden ration delays. I never really used it much but is sounds really cool here. Something like this might be easier to setup in a DAW using vst delays

This is also fun the other way around with the fast delay first and the slower delay second...

I'm not sure which is better. Sometimes I like the long one 1st, other times the shorter one.
The real fun is matching the feedback/decay.

Great explanation, but a little complicated, no? Why not just divide the tempo by 1.618? This way you could sync the tempo to any song with quick, easy math.

I don't know how you only got 75 likes on this video, definitely a thumbs up bro! Keep it up!

Math is truly the language of creation! It looks like the two delays are in series with the faster tempo delay feeding the slower tempo delay, as opposed to the delays being in parallel, is that correct? I have been loving your channel, thanks!

I did it with 6 different delay times ... in series, and switchable with time change in the opposite, like a mirror. d1-d2-d3 ... switch ... d6-d5-d4-d3 .... and switchable on / off for any independent pedal ... (GT-1000) sounds incredible. I still don't try the idea with delays in parallel, or in stereo.

I have stumbled upon this same ratio with two cheap delays. I have a Donner Yellow Fall, with a maximum 600 ms, and getting a Donner White Tape with 1,000 ms. With Both of them set to maximum delay, I am very close to the ratio. Isn't this also close to the dotted eighth setting?

  • @allendesomer

The golden ratio can be used to create a geometric spiral that implodes upon itself infinitely. That's why it works so well for this purpose. Thanks for the tip!

Collision, to collide. Meaning the delays are boucing against each other.
Maybe the traduction was too literal from french to english and it doesn't mean exactly the same thing in english? Add my accent on top and you're in for a lot of fun ;)

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar

You would need to have a screen that shows you the amount of milliseconds if you're not using a tap tempo. If not, it's not going to be accurate!

This is the type of nonsensical fun that the boss dd-500 is perfect for. That stupid thing has so many parameters....you could dual delay your golden ratio and then further modulate the whole thing according to the golden ratio. I might try that for fun...see if I can get my bassman to collapse into a singularity and destroy the neighborhood.
