I miss the days of players that just walked for like an hour of the game and then got at least 3 key passes and 8 dribbles. Sometimes Ozil would do nothing and then get the ball and suddenly arsenal or real Madrid have scored. Messi just stared at the defenders for 20 minutes to make them uncomfortable and then dribble past 3 of them and score. Bergkamp stood in place waiting for a ball and then controlled it with the carefulness of a frightened cat inspecting a piece of ham.

Messi has shown that the role hasn’t died out yet, although the team needs to be built around the player and the rest of the team need to pull their weight. However coaches don’t want to deal with the risk and would rather have someone with half the technicality but double the work rate

There's a Brazilian player called Paulo Henrique Lima, better known as "Ganso" (literally the Portuguese word for "goose", because someone thought he was clumsy and looked like a goose back when he was still at Santos' youth system). He's 34 now and plays for Fluminense.
He burst onto the scene alongside Neymar back in 2010 or thereabouts as the next big guys in Brazilian football - many people thought he could be even better than Neymar. Ganso is exactly that classic number 10 Niran talks about in the video: thin, lanky, not really fast, but had good skills and UNBELIEVABLE vision and passing. Plus, he's always been super elegant on the pitch.
He had a serious injury at some point in his career that did hinder him some, but he left Santos halfway through 2012 to play for São Paulo. He did great there fora few years and left for Sevilla in 2016, where he didn't do well because of the physical demands of the game and because the manager, Jorge Sampaoli, wanted him to do things he just wasn't good at. He even played at Amiens for a bit before joining Fluminense in 2019.
It was at Fluminense that he, after some ups and downs, finally recovered his best form, being the elegant, classy passer he is.
Honestly, I've seen very few players with vision like Ganso's. He's fantastic!

Feel like it’s due to the over-coaching of football. I’ve really disliked football with how it’s been played these last couple of years for me personally. Whenever I watch a game it all looks robotic and teams are just playing the same system against each other with a low block and passing around doing nothing. It’s why I’ve always loved managers like Wenger and Ancelotti who encourage expression and freedom in a time where the art and beauty aspect of football is lost.

Its happening in my countries sport Rugby. Us South Africa won two world cups in a row using a "bomb squad" tactic. It basically boils down to: send on the fast and tough tackling attackers to beat up the opposition, and then use all our substitutions to bring on more to replace them and keep pummeling them.
Sport is moving away from technique and moving to almost purly physicality

I remember telling Arsenal or Ozil fans back in 2020 that the reason why Ozil may not be playing is because of the rapid disappeareance of the number 10, and exactly for the reasons and examples Niran mentioned in this video. I still thought that Ozil should've been playing though rather than no CAM at all. And I got so much toxicity and hostlility from them, claiming I know abolsutely nothing about football and only started watching last year (which wasn't true). Hopefully they've grown a brain and realise what I said was true.

Number 10 is not dying or dead. It has just evolved in my opinion. Lionel Messi is and has been perfect embodiment of modern number 10. A player who starts kind of as a forward and then drops back into midfield depending on the situation. Basically like a false 9. Julian Alvarez, Xavi Simmons from the new generation remind me of that. So, in my opinion the False 9 is kind of a modern number 10.

Klopp tried to bring it back with Thiago but it didn't work out. In an ideal world where Liverpool were constantly pressing teams back into their own half a luxury player like Thiago would have been an excellent asset to break down the defensive block but he came a year or two too late and as such just kept getting mugged in midfield while looking for the pass because there wasn't the work-rate around him to give him time and space.

It didn't disappear, it evolved to the point that it is unrecognizable. It became a faster and highly energetic role. The wait and dictating and picking passes job is passed down to the defensive MFs. Managers now want to have a more attacking presence up front, 10s are expected to help with the attack. Towards the end of the last decade, fans really were frustrated with the work rate those old-school 10s did.

What I don't understand is why separate the beauty from the efficiency? It makes it sound like Bergkamp or Maradona did those skills and runs for the fuck of it. No they did it because it was the best possible decision to make in that moment that's why they were considered class players and not purely smile merchants. And those moments haven't gone away it's that they happen less often and/or are now being taken advantaged of less because of this way of thinking. Hell with pressing I feel like it should be more prevalent because skills are at their most efficient when they're being used to get out of tight spaces like a 2 or 3 man press. Eventually some world class manager is going to advantage of the skill or someone like Xavi Simons or Martin Odegaard and use their skills to find a way to reinvent the position for the modern day, they'll still have to trackback and shit but using their skills to get past a press very quickly then 1 of his teammates will inevitable be open because the heavy defensive focus on 1 guy he'll pass to him bada bing bada boom, goal. There it's still quick efficient soccer but with a little of the magic.

I think having them run so much reduces their effectiveness, its why Bruno has so much problems because he's running when he should be reading the game more
