I love some of your videos. I feel like I can fully relate to the situation your characters are in. Especially the squid and the guy facing three monkeys.
Those seem like satire or explicit allegory (as the message is explained in dialogue). But when I see my tribulations being presented in such a ridiculous, yet respectful fashion, my irrationalities really begin to surface and become easier to overcome

This surprisingly works really well, to the point that Doc Ock joins in with them to help others.

I love this. I like how Big Mask's superpower of growing gigantic in size actually has a role in the plot that isn't violent; Robert probably wouldn't listen to him if he was normal sized.
Not to mention that it could help in case the people he "fights" still ignore him, so then he'd probably be able to try and restrain them in some way

That “oh god I’m such an idiot” can lead to SUCH AN ARCH!! He continues helping Robert as he become a regular “patient” while helping other monsters on the side, he slowly begins doubting his abilities, leading to himself getting the help he gave to so many others!

@@goatsmilk maybe it varies between countries but I think they will still use patient when it comes to actual medical practitioners such as psychiatrists, but for not for counsellors/therapists. But yeah, here it would be clients.
@@jazzy4830 yeah you’re right actually, i didn’t think of anyone beyond therapists. if a physiatrist was giving you medication or physical treatment it would probably be appropriate in some cases to call them a patient, especially in a hospital setting. i think it’s really up to the individual professional, though. i know psycho-therapists that use ‘patient’ and ones that use ‘client’ in basically the same way.

The reference he recognized was indeed cliche, but beyond that, the means by which he drew attention to it was it's self a reference to yet another movie in the same franchise, thereby creating a layered reference which held a deeper meaning. In other words, it is you who must do better.

Like One Punch Man: the cool fighting is backdrop to the real battle: the battle of minds, Big Mask trying to understand his enemies Undertale style. To make it more nuanced he doesn't always win that way and has to defeat them for good despite his efforts to help them.
I like how Big Mask is a combination of the two most popular Tokusatsu heroes. His size, shape and patterns are all based on Ultraman, but his green & black color scheme, his name, and the placement of the “color timer” on his waist like a belt buckle are clearly based on Kamen Rider.
Jeezus squid guy seemed to realize that the ultimate enemy to Therapy Man was just to become someone unreachable by therapy who drags others down. His dastardly plan will lower the self worth of the entire city! One hell of a nemesis for Therapy Man.

Big Mask is a double entendre, his mask makes him big, yes, but he also wears a big mask, emotionally. He can guide others through their agony because he's been there, because sometimes he still is there. That's how empathy works.

Not literally. But I'd like to see more heroes that try to redeem or at least talk with villains instead of just going "whelp, they're evil, time to beat them up and send them to jail without any regard for the reason why they became villains in the first place".
For instance, in Marvel comics I'm convinced Doctor Doom is just one existential crisis and one personal revaluation away from becoming one of the most righteous heroes in the world, and both could easily begin from the right words of a good soul

More seriously, it seems like the ones who are best at talking down other people and empathizing with them can be the people with the very same problems. Big Mask could help because Big Mask understood. But Big Mask too can feel the awkwardness and self-deprecation. But that's human -- we all have that to some degree -- the problem for Robert was it just got so big inside of him that he decided to go out and even hurt people too. All to try to satisfy this extreme feeling or need inside of him. The smaller, more normal awkwardness of Big Mask by contrast is a pretty good and relatable finale.

Honestly though, this was a resounding victory for Big Mask. Not a single casualty, no property damage, no personal sacrifices made and he even improved the squid's life. This is the best possible outcome here.

This is just... so cool. A hero who actually listens and tries to help a monster through his problems instead of "helping" by beating them up or saying that what they're doing is not right and then beat them up. As someone who played Undertale this kinda gives me an odd feeling, especially since I never did genocide in the game. Anyways WE NEED A SERIES.
I mean one *COULD* consider this ‘Ultraman Cosmos in a nutshell’ but in that show sometimes Cosmos is unable to purify his opponents(in fact he killed 23 kaiju and Seijin, granted he purified 25 of them, and this is only including all 65 episodes, not the 3 movies), a series where that happens could work, but I wonder what Big Mask’s finisher would be if he needs to put a foe down(sometimes that is the best thing to do)?

This is so engaging, and I really appreciate Big Mask's attempt to make sense of Robert's true motivations. Big Mask shouldn't feel bad about not being able to resolve Robert's deep rooted issues, but feel good that he made self reflection happen. It won't always be pretty, but Big Mask did a good thing by asking the "what" and "why" of a squid-monster's actions. It's the first step towards healing. Keep us updated in case they ever do meet again! Thanks!

It thought it would just be a comedy at first, but I'm genuinely interested by the plot of a super-hero who just tries to provide mental health help to antagonists.
the best case of a "pacifist" hero I know is Ultraman Cosmos, he finishes fights by purifying or calming them down instead of killing them, most of the time. It's only when the enemies are pure evil he goes into killing.

Well i believe its just an extension of his speech on being hurt, you will be hurt by others no matter what and it will suck, but to be okay despite everything you need to acept yourself flaws and all. When he says "im such an idiot." Hes admitting a fault to himself and accepting it.
@@Pupal_Dugal He isn't though. He isn't stupid, not the way he acted at least. Any person that could be called stupid would've punched the squid and gained a new villain. The problem does indeed reside in the fact that therapists can't work on themselves. Certain aspects of yourself, the deeper ones, can only be pointed and healed by others, even if it mirrors your own plight almost perfectly.

Techinally, talking to an "enemy" to calm it down is what Undertale did.
Also, movies do this quite a good amount of times as well (Since almost all the villains are humans).
The only time where it wouldn't work is if it was a rampaging beast or robot or abomination with no comprehensible way of communication or understanding love.
To be fair this does the concept much better, in many works if feels like a cop out. They build up an idea of a great unreasonable monster incapable of empathy then end the conflict with a simple, „just be nice“ and it works. However in this short Maskman never attempted to fight, he sees the monster for what it truly is, a hurt man. This isn’t „talking to an enemy to calm it down“ it’s more of a exaggerated representation of the monsters we face everyday.
Just imagine the citizens watching this.
"Yeah, he's got a point."
"Yeah, he should become a therapist. He really digs in to the existential problems that are key to unlocking the man behind the monster. Man, what an inspiration."

Tough day for me too. Broke a bolt on a car; ended up being one of if not the hardest bolt to remove. So for hours I was just bombarded with the sounds of everyone tying to fix my mistake, and that after I was told like 50 times “don’t do this, don’t do that” when I did something completely different. Put a real halt and killed my mood.
I love how authentic the argument was. In media arguements often seem to be so one-sided. In this both characters make solid points and act like real people would in a real conversation. I've witnessed so many arguments and been in so many discussions that feel so similar to the way the characters interact. Very well written.
I'd like to point out that here at around 6:40 the giant squid actually has a point about the ultraman character, I'm sure he means well of course and he's calling out the attention seeking behavior that the squid is doing but the squid does have a point that he's assuming and making statements about what he's feeling without actually asking him how he feels. It reminds me of many well meaning speakers in the internet that try to give advice to depressed folk and overing up solutions to solve it, like "you gotta believe in yourself.. Etc, etc" It's well meaning yes and there's a truth to it but the problem is not that depressed folks don't know that they need to believe in themselves it's the steps needed to get there, ultimately I feel as if it's way to simple to give a piece of good advice to a depressed person and hope that they change just because of that. I'm also sensing that the ultraman guy isn't really coming to the argument with a clear knowledge of what being depressed feels like and is going off on a more general understanding of what it is in media, the whole talk feels like a guy opening up to a semi close friend about their depression and them not really able to handle it because they lack knowledge in that area.

@@kerguelen_cabbage i don't necessarily agree, thing is you can't expect a person without a psychological background or experience with depression to know what to say to peopl who are going through that, often they are trying to help but just lack the necessary knowledge to do so, it's when they think that their solution on "feeling down" Is the one that's right for you that it becomes a nuisance, but it ia right that most advice won't really help somebody get over depression immediately.

@@chrisdawson1776 Talk-no-jutsu normally refers to when they talk down the most irredeemable and vile villains and manage to inexplicably talk them down despite that bu appealing to dumb stuff like their humanity/love/goodness in them. I think that does a disservice to this hero, who just used logic and facts to point out inconsistencies with the villain's motive, making them question their goal. Then he also talked to them like a person, unjudgingly, and didn't default to "YOU ARE EVIL! I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOUR MOTIVE, BUT YOU SHALL DIE, MONSTER!!!" Sometimes, talking it out can resolve and defuse problems before it escalates, and sometimes, a villain is just someone who needed someone to talk them out of it before they did something they regretted.
His super power is gigantification, and he's a therapist. God this is great.
That ending was just perfect! It shows that everyone, even those who appear to be the strongest and wisest, have their own flaws to deal with and can commit mistakes too. No one’s perfect, and sometimes we need the help of others to feel better, get what we want and need and to overcome our own shortcomings.
Ngl this would make a good series. It doesn't need to be too long.
Some villains could be helped by the former ones that Big Mask already talked to.
By the end of the series, the villains will all band together to remove the "big mask". Because while Big Mask was able to help them face themselves, the hero himself has been stuck wearing a facade all that time. I think that would make a good ending. The whole series could have people asking "Where is Big Mask?" and the last episode will answer "How is Big Mask?"
Such an amazing iea for a genuinely wholesome series. Masking is a word for people hiding their true depression or putting on a brave face to show the world. If they do make more parts to this. I would like this to become the point of the series.

Damn this really stabbed into my heart, especially with Big Mask's very last line; trying his best to prevent destruction and save many including Robert through having him acknowledge his self esteem issues, hitting on all the right points and succeeding to shed light on the true issue at hand, yet ending off the "battle" with a critical and hypocritical negative reflection of himself that reveals the very same struggle yet different and extraverted outlook he himself fights with, and tries to save others from.
What a direct slap in the face that is for me. Thanks for making this.

Psychoperson - they fight not with muscle but with compassion. A super villain attacks the city? The hero discovers they have bpd and provides proper treatment. Invasion from outer space? This is a species' sub group secluded long enough from others to radicalize themselves and just seek justice in blaming others.
A mob of Karens? They will be 'defeated' by making their leaders self aware about being a piece in a society, who will then spread the word.
Loving this... The psychoanalyzing of feelings behind destructive behaviour, the voice acting, the satire, even the simple animation... I love it. Thanks for making it

Honestly, this is a great representation of my favorite comicbook moments. The end of Killing Joke, Flash reconciling with his rogues, Spider-Man and Eddie or Flash Thompson. It's something I really wish we'd see more often

The technology behind turning people into squids is what's exceptional, not so much the act of becoming a squid.
tbh, the ability to alter an entire human to be identical to a squid while also retaining their human reasoning (from what we’ve seen from Robert) would be completely revolutionary and, with adjustments, could be applied across a lot of different fields. Like genetically altering cancer cells so they aren’t harmful anymore.

Yeah…. Big Mask, a giant superhero who tries to help his foes, and a lot of times he actually gets through to them, but sometimes the best thing they can do is to put them down(but that is a FULL-ON last resort, just like how Ultraman Cosmos is the one who you would REALLY have to push to his limits for him to kill, just that in his 65 episode show he had to do that 23 times)

Big Mask is definitely not an idiot. He was able to take down the villain without any violence.
You know I adore this animation and I am like 99% sure the author picked the main character to be a Ultraman Expy because on those shows they actually try to help the aliens if they aren't just mindless destroyers and even team up with would-be invaders to make the galaxy a better place.
As a superhero media fan who really appreciates when superheroes do this, I love this so much. Robert feels as fleshed out as some really good Batman villains. I guess the "except" isn't really accurate all things considered but I blame the algorithm for that

Big Mask would go down the first time he faced somebody who is truly evil.

And yet, it would also make a great conflict for a show. Some people can't be helped, at times. Maybe they don't want to be helped. Maybe they are too far gone. Maybe there was nothing to fix in the first place.
And suddenly, Big Mask realizes that he _can't_ help everybody. At least, not inmediately, and other times, it's just impossible, and has to put them down for good. And yet, he tries, and tries, and keeps trying, no matter what.
But he _fails._ Maybe he is defeated by the monster/villain, and needs to be rescued. Maybe he puts them down. And the fact of the matter is, that he didn't manage to help them. To give them the help they needed.
