In the 80's this was our song (we were in our 20's). My roommates and I just wanted to dress up to the maxs and go out dancing. Guys would buy us drinks all night and they would expect something after the clubs closed. Nope, we would just go to breakfast and go home. The DJ at one club would play this song when he saw us come in.
It is the same intro and beat to the Supremes .. my world is empty with out you. This song is actually 60 years old. Then Stevie Wonder re did this as part time lover
John Oates was asked what he had in mind for the meaning of the song. Here is his reply "Well, it was about New York City, after the fact. I got the idea for the song because there was a woman who was very - she was beautiful but had a very foul, you know, vocabulary. It was the juxtaposition of this great beauty with this foul mouth that really kind of sparked an idea to me that she would chew you up and spit you out. But neither Daryl nor I wanted to write a song that was anti-women or negative toward women. So, what we did was we transpose that initial idea and use New York City in the ’80s as a metaphor. New York City became the maneater, the city that would chew you up and spit you out. And that is really what the song is truly about."
Yeah, but Guy has a point in the video, these women do exist. It doesn't mean it's all women or anything stupid like that. But they still exist nonetheless. Women that Just wanna *CHEW YOU UP*
They have always been called Hall & Oates but at some point they decided that they didn't like being called that becaue it didn't show their individuality so they wanted their entire name used instead. They wanted to be known as separate individual people. You can review ANY Hall & Oates song and it would be a banger. They are Hall Of Fame writers and artists. I Can't Go For That, Sara Smile, She's Gone, Kiss on My List, Rich Girl, I could go on and on. They are all classics.
There is Daryl’s House with Daryl Hall where he features big name musicians coming from his house and they gather there with Daryl and play. I love Hall and Oates. Very talented guys.
They are in the mist of law suits and restraining orders against each other. John Oats wants to sell off the rights to their music to a publishing company Hall said NO. Now they're fighting over who has the final say.
***** Straight outta' Philly, HALL& OATES Charted 29 out of Their 33 Singles. & are the Biggest Selling Duo. Solid blue eyed soul along with MICHAEL McDONALD, BOZ SKAGGS, BOBBY CALDWELL, etc.
I actually want to say I have really seen you grow as a person over the last couple months... I don't know if it's just listening to this older music, but I appreciate your willingness to think about things on a deeper level. And of course you're enjoying new music... Just wanted to give you the thumbs up on this. You've got my approval
I rediscovered Hall & Oates around 2019 or so and realized I had never appreciated how many hits they had and how GREAT they were. I swear, for almost an entire year, I listened to nothing but their Greatest Hits album. I now have them burned into my brain. So good...
True, but according to the story he told, he said it started as a song about a beautiful woman with foul language, but because they did not want to do a negative song about a woman, they went in the direction of the woman being New York City.
In being into Daryl Hall and John Oates since I literally became aware of music, I missed that somehow. I respectfully and standing by my statement and the interview that I saw.@@allisterfiend_2112

That was a good intro. I was at a teenager listening to that song and this might be the first time I listen to the lyrics. So if you're worried about it being super long, at least it was really good.😂 Call and Oates was a great idea I'm glad you searched on your phone, apologized, and then gave us the call. That's a great beat to remember for 45 years and now I have a phone number to get my new fix in. 😂
There were album versions of a record which include longer beginning and middle instrumentals. The radio versions were shorter so they could get more songs, ads and news. Every once in awhile they would play an album version so the DJ could go take a break. American Pie was popular for this. It worked unless the needle stuck
Each of those songs reminds me of a different girl I was with. Maneater; Blue eyed southern belle, preachers daughter. Her car broke down in front of my house.(Whittier,CA) We “ dated“ for a year. It was like I was hypnotized. No regrets.
Love Hall and Oates!! They have so many good songs! It's a shame they are no longer together....Daryl Hall just recently filed a lawsuit and restraining order against John Oats for trying to sell his share of the pair's publishing to Primary Wave Music without his consent....Apparently it's gotten pretty ugly! Kinda sad!
FYI. Every album they have put out have their names as “Daryl Hall and John Oates”. They say they are two guys who play music together. A fan favorite to listen to is “Every time you go away”. It is a lyrics only sound track. No video.
Produced by Daryl Hall and John Oates. Written by them and Sara Allen. Mickey Curry on drums 🥁. He quit to join the studio band of Bryan Adams. MC played with Alice Cooper, The Cult, Steve Jones, Andy Taylor, Tom Cochrane and other musicians.
A new country music act I think you will like is “Chapel Hart.” They wrote and recorded a response to Dolly Parton’s song “Jolene”. It is called “You Can Have Him Jolene.” Dolly Parton responded very favorably to this song.
They did a song that I can't understand why it wasn't more popular, called Your Imagination. I've been trying to get somebody to do a reaction but still haven't seen one. This was a good one here.
Daryl Hall is a great musician and he had a TV show, maybe 10 years ago "Welcome to Daryl's House" where guest musicians came to his house and they all played a couple of the guests songs and a couple of Daryl's songs, FIRE! He had a whole set up on his farm I think east coast upstate somewhere.
That’s absolutely wild😂 I’m just gonna call that number to listen to there music when I’m at a friends or family’s house when they’re playing dooks for music😂
Your initial commentary made this retired English professor remember asking young women in one of my classes years ago about the songs they listen to. I mean, da…, the lyrics were so misogynistic…horrifying even (I don’t remember the song or rapper, not my style at all even if I am from Philly). Anyway, the young women looked at me, like “What?” In the ensuing exchange, they clearly never listened to the words, just the beat. Jeez….. Even as a teenager when this came out, I knew the meaning. Very rarely do I learn that the lyrics I had “created” are not the ones sung. Naïveté, not la k of trying. Really interesting to see you two having this conversation. Thanks for ;eating us in to your world.
These guys were HUGE since the 70's. Blue eyed soul. Check out Live From Daryl's House. Why are you so surprised by these lyrics? People have been writing provocative stuff for hundreds of years!! Where do you think babies came from a thousand years ago?? 😅
John Oates was asked about the music for this song on a PBS special about Hall and Oates. He said he spent time between albums and tours in Jamaica. The music for Maneater was originally written to be Reggae. You can hear it a bit in the his guitar line.
The first comment I read explained that they ended up writing this with New York as the setting and scenario. That made me think of two things. The first that this song reminds me of is Billy Joel and how gritty some of his work is, and how similar in drive the artists have in their music, a powerful beat in many songs. The other thought I've had about Maneater is: Vampires!. She only comes out at night, and watch out boy, she'll tear you up, to me, makes me think of vampires, now with New York as a perfect backdrop. It also makes me think of how some women are on the make without a thought to their amour du jour, as you two have mentioned. After they broke up, Daryl Oates went into folk/Americana music, small venues, and he might have ventured into bluegrass. Hall, I believe is an accomplished carpenter and wood worker ; I as m not sure what else he's been doing. They have performed together several times times over the years. I have always thought of them as a good duo.
Well, it may be a metaphor about New York City, but in my eyes, going back to the 80's, when women got a little more bold about going on the prowl, er, town, I mean, it's a great story. Yes, the woman meeting someone at the bar either pre-planned or at the moment, and keeps one eye on the door to see if she can upgrade. Those were the days...
Please!!!! You now need to do a Darryl's Garage set of reactions!!! That is a rabbit hole of content. He invites artists into his garage and they do music sets! Cee-Lo was one great set!
The song is about the actress Kelly LeBrock (Weird Science) or ex-wife of Steven Seagal. They ran across her in a New York bar after a show. The way she was acting they said "Wow. What a maneater." If you saw the movie you can see what they mean. Was not much difference between her character and her in real life.
Fellas, this commentary is GOLD. You jut turned MANEATER by HALL & OATES into the red-pill theme song 🤣 And yes son, you most definitely WERE the placeholder. That's what these women do. They are always looking to level up. You're just another rung on the ladder. And here's the BLACK PILL ... just 'cause you put a ring on it (Mr. Pegasus), you are not immune ... the stats tell the tale. All that aside, CAN'T go wrong with some HALL & OATES, maybe it's time for "I Can't Go For That" Let's Go!
You have to know what or who they wrote this song about after meeting her for the 1st time. There was a very popular model & actress during that time named Kelly LeBrock that guys drooled over but when they met her in a nightclub or restaurant she cussed like a sailor, was very aggressive - scared both of them!! Not at all what they thought she'd be like

Another, different, song called "Maneater" that you may want to check out is by Nelly Furtado. Produced by Timbaland, it was a pretty big hit about 20 years ago.

As a 60+ year old woman, men think they can treat women like they’re an object to be used and thrown away. When the song “I am woman, hear me roar” came out, the game changed. Until men and women wake up and treat each other with respect and women are treated as equals, your daughters, granddaughters and generations beyond will have to wake up and realize, in the end, they don’t need a man to live a wonderful and fulfilling life and that doesn’t mean being gay. Look at all of the single mothers who have been abandoned and through all the struggles have survived. Being FREE can be a beautiful thing and this is coming from someone who’s married 41 years.
Bro i love your channel! I just found it a couple of weeks ago because i found Ren! Your a true professional bro! Thanks for input love from Australia 👌👍♥️👊
They have always called themselves Daryl Hall and John Oates. The dj’s and the public just shortened it to Hall and Oates. Every single one of their album has said Daryl Hall and John Oates. Love this song! You guys are great!
If you like 80s sound and sax, you should check out the genre synthwave. Two great bands are Gunship and The Midnight. For Gunship check out the song Monster in Paradise . For The Midnight you should try the song Vampires.
Have you ever reacted to Def Leppard? Does a pretty good live version of Rock of ages on their channel. Not sure if you know this but Def leppard's drummer lost his arm in 1984. He taught himself new drumming techniques and continue to play with the band with his one arm it's pretty fascinating. You should check them out if you've never seen them
I am SO going to start calling this number and finding out if other artists have this going on. How cooool!!! Thanks for interesting conversation. #brotalk💪🤘🏋️♂️😲
They are still around although Hall has recently (November 2023) sued Oates over a report that Oates is trying to sell his share of pairs publishing to a company that has acquired many other catalogs like Stevie Nicks, Prince and Burt Bacharach. It’s sealed so there’s little info about the suit but it’s probably Hall upset that Oates didn’t offer it to him so Hall owned 100% of the rights.
Daryl Hall used to have a show where all kinds of musicians would show up. Its awesome. Its called live from Daryl 's it might be around. Rob thomas went on there. Iove rob thomas and matchbox 20

Saw them live when they were new in 1980 in Sarnia, Ontario with a crowd of about 4500 people.
Look up Warren G with “Regulate “ and Michael McDonald “Can’t forget”
Have you ever reacted to Def Leppard? Does a pretty good live version of Rock of ages on their channel. Not sure if you know this but Def leppard's drummer lost his arm in 1984. He taught himself new drumming techniques and continue to play with the band with his one arm it's pretty fascinating. You should check them out if you've never seen them
I love the bass guitar in this one. I have read that they don't like being called "Hall & Oates", and prefer Daryl Hall & John Oates
AC/DC "Shes Got the Jack" will blow your mind!
