I did the bell on the door and a treat method - Lucy learned too well, she would ring the bell to go out, we'd hit the bottom of the stairs to go into the yard and she would just turn around and go back in the house expecting a treat. They are incredibly smart!
Thank you for sharing. I pick up my Jack Russell Terrier next week, so I'm trying to prepare. Potty training is definitely at the top of the list.
You are so welcome!
Thanks Josh and Luna, I’m getting my baby on Friday you are both helping me prepare 👍🥰
As a very soon to be new dog owner of a Jack Russell puppy, your videos have been so helpful and the best on RUclips. You’ve found a real niche sir 👍🏻
You've helped us so much with the training of our Jack Russell. Thank you thank you!!
Thank you! I’m hopeful now 😅 we adopted a terrier 2 weeks ago. She’s spayed and between 1 to 2 years old. Potty train has been a struggle! We’ve had bigger mutts 😂 we will be doing all this starting today. Thank you so much for sharing!
Wow this is really smart, I’m definitely going to try this if normal methods don’t work thank you
Anytime.
Let us know how it goes!

@@TerrierOwner did it thx
JR behavior describes my dog perfectly. Thanks for helpful tips! Got her from animal control 1 yr old terrier chihuahua mix. Sweet dog but a little more training needed!
🥰 Great tips!🙏♥️
Taking them out every 30 mins works for me I started that right away, she's 8 weeks now so I also have a piddle pad at the door for the times when she feels she needs to go or is waiting for me to get to the door to take her out. She does go to the door and tells me she needs to go out just not all the time yet. I would say we're 80/20 the 20 are the misses. At 8 weeks I feel she's doing really well by going to the door but the 20 percent is the hardest to break.
Had my Jack Russell, Basil, for 3 months now after my bull terrier, Pepper, died in July. He died of old age, so I expected a laid back, anemic JR but this guy is a bag of lit firecrackers!
We used asorbing pads in various places of the house. At first, he would look for mats and small rugs to pee on, but now he is using the pads for both functions. Occasionally he pees on the rug and/or potty in a hidden corner.
Nowadays, we immediately take him out for walks after he has a meal. Almost 99% time, after he eats, he needs to potty. So thats been working too.
Definitely will try this method. Thank you for this.👊
Anytime and hope it works for you!
Getting my Jack Russel tomorrow
Always good to receive reasurrances. I HAVE BEEN doing it right. My JR. is all this and more. Now 98% of the time Fergus let's me know when... of course he does slip up now & then.
It only took me 2. Weeks to toilet train my JRxM he was only 12 weeks old it was so easy that is why my dog is such a good boy
I have a Jackie-Bichon (Jack Russell and Bichon frise cross) so potty training is hard. Really think this mite work
When I crate my jack russell at night he cries and cries. What do I do? I end up taking him out and letting sleep with me and the older dog I have.
I feel like I've really messed up with my 24 weeks jrt. I can't stop her from peeing in our living room. Could this be because 3 years ago we had a lovely boy jrt, sadly we lost him, Could his scent still be in our house? Our puppy is driving me insane, have tried all sorts. But she seems to love our living room carpet!
She will go outside on command perfectly for numbers 1 and 2's. But it's like a few times per day she has to pee at my feet in the living room and we've lost that communication. Thanks in advance 🙂
Thanks for the great video. I have a 11 week old Jack Russell Terryer . He's just driving me mad byting my hands, hav you got any suggestions.
I would be grateful. thank you from down under
I have a video on this channel you can check out about this exact issue.
Just check the channel page. Nipping and Biting with Jack Russell's
Got the treats. Bring on the bells and the clicker!
Currently have a 6 almost 7 week old girl! Live in an apartment 3 flights up and its cold out. So I'm trying to teach her to go on the actual toilet! Have a kid potty and pads right now. I'm going to add this into the training thank you!
You got this!
If you are home all day that might work but what if you work outside the home and are gone 10-12 hours?
Thank you for the tips!!!!! Because I have 3 kids and I definitely cannot watch him ALL the time.
I completely understand. I only have 1 kid who is turning 5 and I can't even watch Luna all the time so it is completely understandable that you have that struggle as well.
Hello, new pup now 11wks, I've had since wk 6. She was pad training and she now goes wherever..well u know! I like this technique but she cries lots of the time wo me near 😢❤ any ideas? Thank you for your time
JRT shorty
My brother got a JRT puppy and doesn’t even own dogs he gave the puppy to me a 20+ year dog owner and I have NEVER had a puppy like this the puppy is only 8 weeks only but his biting is a serious issue it’s not aggressive at all all play but he is puncturing my hands twice now he’s very smart a caught onto crest training quickly but I NEED HELP
hi... how are you
my puppy GUS is 3 months old we live in 2 bed room appartment in Sydney.
i usually do after his meal 30min later took him out for potty it work well also if i see him a band it too much i told my husband took him baclcony, it work ....
sometime we busy something and did no fast enough he piss and poo
I’d like to “paper train “ her also. How do I do that?
My mom and I went to the shelter in January and have a terrier mix. He was approx 6 months at the time. It's been a struggle getting him to potty outside. Instead he uses the outside to go potty a little but would rather bark at other dogs or cars or people. Inside the house now he has one favorite spot and that's a blanket we lay on the floor. We originally thought he would use it to curl up on. We do take him out often but maybe not every hour. Last night right in front of me he peed on the blanket and I found dried poop stuck to it to. Mom has different methods than I do in training and I am sure that confuses the dog. I just wish he would stop goin in the house.
How old is Luna?
How often do Jack Russells pee? Our 4 month puppy has been going every hour. Is that the way when they are an adult as well?
My dogs name is also Luna!
Love it.
Hi! I’m finding two things most difficult with this small breed… biting and potty training! I’ve had other dogs. But, she is one of the smartest and sweetest ever! She’s also only 10 1/2 weeks old! Any advice on biting?
Say, bah, to the biting, it works.
As soon you get your new jack Russell puppy you start straight away you have to have patience with them you have to keep saying toilet toilet over and over again until it sinks in it will work because that is the way I trained my jack Russell x M
My 5-year-old Jack was potty trained the day I brought him home at 8 weeks actually potty trained before I brought him home by his own mother the breeder I purchased him from had a barn heated Barn outside with a doggie door and when the mother got up to go outside to go to the bathroom all the pups followed so when I told the breeder it took me 3 days to potty train the Jack I had for 16 years I also got from her before this one she was like this one's already potty trained and I didn't believe it but when I got him home and the door was shut he when he had to go he went to the door and wanted out.
Hello! I'm a six year jack Russell.what do you when they don't eat treats ?
I am a new JRT owner. 75% JRT 25% border jack. Ryder does really well potty training. However he pees on the pad if needed, because he hasn't mastered the bell; bit he spots on my carpet. Like he's marking his territory? Do you know why this is or what could help stop this? You aimt lying he is so sneaky and fast. He steals the remote to his shock collar lol
the tether technique wouldn't work for my girl, she needs to be by my side at all times or she becomes very distressed, I used a similar technique I attached a lead to my belt and kept her attached to me and took her out regularly, you are wrong my girl is ALWAYS by my side, we've never been apart for more than 5 minutes in her life(for me to shower, pee etc) she's 2 and a half
My Angel was rescued from a cruel SOB at 3 years of age she was so timid and nervous but she's much better now.but she came potty trained and very obedient and so loyal but get this she wipes her bottom after each potty time she's so dainty a real little lady. She's so sweet.
Call it the Pavlov technique
Easy to confuse, but this is actually an operant conditioning technique that was developed by B.F. Skinner (look up some of his early experiments). Pavlov developed what we call classical conditioning, which is more akin to the starting of clicker training (click > present food). Though clicker training also turns in to operant conditioning when the dog starts doing a repetitive 'task' to get the treat. The same applies here. Ring the bell > go outside > get a treat. It's easy to mix them up because this also starts with classical conditioning. However, it doesn't remain that way, if it did, the dog would still pee in the house; the key is the door gets opened. Think of it this way; "operant" conditioning = operating something within the environment to change the environment in some way. Classical conditioning (aka Pavlovian conditioning) relies on a neutral stimulus (aka bell) paired with a conditioned response (aka salivating for food). If it were classical, Josh would ring the bell and open the door. But instead, Luna rings the bell, Josh opens the door, Luna goes outside and pees and gets the treat. Pavlov only rang a bell and gave the dogs food, they never did any of the work to "change" their environment to make that food appear. Almost every behavioural technique used today is operant conditioning. I'm currently a second-year second-semester behavioural sciences student, we spent a whole year on Pavlov (classic) vs B.F. Skinner (operant). Hope this helps :)
I'm aware POTTY is an American euphemism ... I make no apologies as an AUSTRALIAN.
... I CANNOT STAND THAT WORD ... Potty.
To my Multi lingual JR I say " OK ! TOILET TIME , NOW" ! " GOOD BOY" ; & off he goes around the corner for his Private Moment ... its Winter here ... July 22 ... so hes' very quick. By the way we have plans for anr JR around late October/early November. I've heard the second is easier to raise as it will take the cues of appropriate behaviour from the first. The first's name being FERGUS. Still deciding on the name for our secomd ... (I would love 40 + I love this breed soo much... What is not to like ...)
So my Copper, was standing by the door and whinning. He was doing great, thought he was trained. Until it rained. He hates the rain, has a rain coat. We have gone backwards big time. He is 4 mths. now and he is good at holding his pee and doing it inside. Maybe I should tether him but he is very playful needs to run this off. He would be so bored.
Time to change the cardinal shirt JR dont like them, ghey like cubs mine told me
He pees on her yes 2 JRTs can’t stop I’m trying
Honey is 10months old but she still does her poo in the morning
Your dog is a rat terrier not a Jack Russell cheese you don't even know what dog you got
