It's got much to do with that condenser microphone, pitch correction software, some good reverb and EQ plug-ins on top of that and a damn good interface. Technology can make any voice smooth today. I would deduce that without he is still probably a pretty decent singer, but if he just had his guitar and was being recorded by a cell phone camera, it would sound very weak.

Your singing brings tears to my eyes. This quaint melody from so long ago... stirs up all wonderfully bittersweet coming-of-age feelings I haven't felt in so long. Images of youth, bliss, despair, dreams, death, destruction, love, warmth - all flashed through me in 3 minutes and 47 seconds. This must be a really hard song to cover as a male, with all the high notes, but you really pulled it off. I'm very protective of covers of my favorite band in the world. Even now I dislike comments like "omg they are my favorite band I used to hear them all the time" because I listened to them always since discovering them in the 90s. I'm glad people are getting to know them again though. Still I hear them everyday had tickets to her concert and sadly she has gone. This cover how ever is, heavenly. So as willow patter song says "don't take anything for granted, you will only miss it when it's gone"
