- The base model MINI. The one you've probably not seen much of. This is the first time I've reviewed a 2002 MINI Cooper. An R50 no less. This is also the first time driving one.

I've had Minis since I was 18. My first Mini was a R50. It rode very harsh and had sqeaks and rattles in the trim but I loved it. Life would be boring without a Mini.
That brings back memories of driving from Oxford to Portsmouth on the coast back in 2001 in a bright yellow R53. It really turned heads as there were barely any on the roads then. Ex MINI employee.
Just bought a beautiful R50 from 2005 in british-racing-green and doing some work on it. I love it!
I own a 2005 R50 as my daily driver and it is an absolute blast. The one you drove only has the muffler part of the JCW sound kit. The kit comes with a sound tube that connects to the air box and directs the intake sound at the driver so you hear it more inside. I made my own intake sound tube and when you rev it out, it sounds absolutely wicked. I also took all the fiberglass packing out of my stock muffler and it gives it just a bit more aggressive sound than stock. I love my R50.
Sounds cool
Glad you had that fun...sweet with those tasteful mods. The R52 in my garage lets me enjoy all that and a little more. It's a keeper.
I am still having an r53 and its fun without problems, rattles or anything. 220.000km but its time for my brg f66. I can't wait. After 21 years of everyday driving in traffic I LOVE the DCT and everything in F66, even the rear and the interior :) I've done with my loving car 3 road trips from Greece with the MINI UNITED (Italy, Netherlands and England) and done some rounds in misano, zandvoort and silverstone. No problems ONLY fun!!!
If you notice he didn't need all that infotainment Jazz, that's why the newest Minis infotainment system is perfect! They took away the gauge cluster in trade for a heads up display because that's all you need, and the large screen is for when you're parked. So great ❤
Basics. Simplicity. The cars perhaps got too complex so the new ones are a return to simplicity. The first gen’s were simple cars really. Simple and fun. A perfect recipe. Now in the newer ones you can turn off the center screen while driving and not use it at all. Some folks do.
My mechanic even uses a R50 as a loaner car so I still drive one from time to time. It even fits two childseats in the back for my 1 and 7 year old and I'm not even squished behind the wheel (I'm 5"11).
Those engines can even reach 248.000 miles if you take good care of them.
Beautiful, I have one too. Nothing like that one but I did turf floor mats 😅
My impression for the R50 Cooper was you need to flog it. It's an incredibly fun car to drive, especially near its limits. I would even say, moreso than the supercharged Cooper S. I ended up getting a Cooper S and still have it. Over 200,000 miles and still going strong. Incredibly reliable if reasonably well maintained.
I didn’t feel I should since I didn’t own the car. The owner later told me to rev it up higher and “flog” it lol. On top of that I have noticed the frames per second looks faster when I reduce it to 24 and I think again I had it at 60, lol.
i still have my mini cooper r50 2003 pepper white with 41k miles. i still love the way it drives . never went out of new york its entire life.
I find that low mileage impressive.
2 years ago, we had a gold on gold 2002 Justa manual Mini. Fast, fun car. Loved driving it. We had to flip it for a 2014 Clubby Sport, manual, more room to get in/out for my mom. I still have my 2006 Justa automatic, Red Bull. I have it tuned by Byetronik, have an aftermarket intake, an engine strut brace, and that little baby flies. Nothing like a basic 1st gen!
So, I was having lunch with Robert/MiniBrothas the other day. He said he was doing some stuff with you? If you are in ATX again, I'd love to have you drive mine!
@desireebirmingham2420 Was there with the racing team. He did a video interview.
Well that was a treat!
It was fun to drive. Except for almost shifting it into reverse while on the highway.
Have only driven 6-speed manuals before so a 5-speed manual was a little interesting.
I love my 2005 R53. It has an Eaton supercharger and a 6 speed standard. It's still under 110K. It's the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I paid $6700.
The 05 update really made these cars even better. I own one and the Getrag 5-speed is much better than the Midlands.
Did you have problems with the Midland 5-speed? I have on 03 Cooper with the Midland 5-speed and it shifts smoothly and quietly, and has not been a problem..
Almost like mine I don't have the aero kit mine is the 2005 later model with the chilli pack has 125k miles had it 3 years and it's amazing
Sounds like an awesome car.
Not to nitpick, but the 2005 LCI switched to a Getrag gearbox. That gearbox is 100% better imo
Yes that’s correct. But the 2002 to 2004 R50 did use the 5-speed Midlands.
@@TheMINIac My first POV drive was a 2005 MINI. I thought these cars were awesome and felt really substantial vs the Hondas I normally sold. Later on, someone came in and after a test drive, this person asked how much a low km (I’m Canadian) 2004 would be worth? I was shocked. Buyers remorse after less than a year. But after looking over her car, the ugly headlights and that lifeless gearbox, I endeavoured to get her as much $$$ as possible so she could upgrade to a MUCH better car. After we concluded the deal, she confided that that she originally was after just upgrading headlights from the OG HID to the much better looking 2005+. But after a test drive? She thought the gearbox was also way better. You have to remember that this was in 2005 and trying to retrofit from a pre-LCI to the new car was either impossible or VERY expensive. There were other changes but I feel the headlights and gearbox were easily the two biggest improvements
Do they not all have that sliding sunroof shade ? My 2022 F60 has this, as well as my old 2015 F56. 🤔
They’ve progressively gotten thicker to block out more sun over the years.
side skirts are from R56 btw :)
Yes I know. He couldn’t get R53 side skirts anymore for the JCW so he installed these. I think they’re replica.
Turns out they weren’t replica. They’re real JCW side skirts from the R56.
All cosmetic mods, no performance mods. Oh well, it looks nice.
It has the JCW Sound Kit from the first generation. It does increase the power slightly. In this generation you kind of want reliability over modifications if you want to drive it frequently. And even mostly stock it’s incredibly fun to drive.
@@TheMINIac Appreciate the video. Just seems like a strange choice of modifications. I've had a 2005 R50 since I bought it new in 2005 and I started with power modifications, then brakes and suspension, then cosmetic things. To each their own. Glad you got a chance to enjoy a R50!
@honestreviewer3283 the owner of it is pretty eclectic. He owns the yellow JCW I featured in a previous video.
