The ability for us as humans to look to the heavens and question our existence, yet fret and fight over absolute bullshit, is what this verse means to me. Out of all living things on this planet, we have the ability to question our existence yet waste it over materialistic, superficial garbage. Maynard is our generations Poe.

The singer is not religious either but was raised in a strict Baptist community for his first twelve years or so. So he is versed in biblical accounts of things but largely uses them as metaphors. These lyrics are absolutely phenomenal.
Maynard is a Deist. He has a belief in a higher power and the spiritual world but he is not a follower in any particular religion.
Every single world leader on this planet should be required to listen to this song in an empty room over and over again until they are brought to tears.

There's an animated music vid that kinda show what they are talking about in this song, and it kinda sheds light more on the song and its meaning. And the way most Tool songs are made, is the band makes the song first and Maynard then later makes lyrics after the fact then records his vocals last.

I'm an agnostic atheist; I don't know, therefore I don't believe. That said, this is one of my favorite songs of theirs. The religious aspect is just a setting in which to get the point across that humanity is awful. Yeah, we do good things, but we've done so many horrific acts to ourselves, other life on earth, and the planet in general. We suck, and Tool calls us out on it from the perspective of angels.

I grew up in the middle east and by the time I was in high school I still had undiagnosed stomach aches and sickness etc. Turnes out it was just due to stress and fear or whatever. This song along with Vicarious gave me so much release over the madness of this crazy world, especially as a frustrated nihilist teenager who lived through one war after the other. I used to listen to 10000 Days every single day on the way to and from school. Always hoped to get an assignment where I could choose this song for the class to discuss lol.
This is one of my favorite Tool songs but I don’t think I’ve heard one I don’t like 😂 check out H, parabola, schism, vicarious, to name a few. Go on a Tool journey!

Man, humans suck
When I groove to Tool music, I'll normally have different body parts follow different instruments. Like my legs will follow the bass, head will bob to the quitar or vocals, arms might move to the high hats, shoulders to the kick drum or the snare. Interestingly enough when I started doing that, I started looking more and more like Maynard does when he's on stage. Not the coolest look. Like if someone saw you moving like that down the street late at night, without any context garunteed you'd scare the hell out of them.
You got part of your commentary wrong, and I wanted to point it out because I think it makes a difference. The angels at first were amused and in the next part they were confused.
