Please consider donating to the Green Beret Foundation for all they do for Special Operations veterans!
In this video we breakdown Operational Detachment Alpha specialties. Teams will have the same training and purpose as other ODA's 90 percent of the time. However, they have the added responsibility of training their infiltration platforms to remain proficient in case they are needed.
Almost time for the book to drop on February 23rd! Thank you guys so much for all of the support! Please like and subscribe it means a lot!

“Heights are not my thing”
“I’m a free fall guy”
😂😂
#relatable
lol I thought I was the only one. The idea of free falling sounds fun. but I hate heights too.
You're so high up it doesn't register as a height. It's like looking out the window of an airplane....without the airplane.
I was a freefall guy for my entire career - I'm not good with heights. But, there's a difference between heights and altitude. Altitude is your friend!
I had a guy that worked for me in construction that was in 82nd for 10 years. He was scared to death of being 15-25' feet up on a wall of a house. Absolutely terrified him, and wouldn't or couldn't do it. But had no problem jumping out of a plane at 250'. Of course you have a parachute on jumping and no safety net below on an outside wall of a house under construction. I get it.
Former 10th Group 18D here. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
I was selected by the 7SFG as "Soldier of the Year 1965." The winner received a gold SF ring and the choice of any school he wanted. My CSM was friends with the HALO CSM and there was an opening for the next class and he asked me if I wanted it. I told him I didn't think I had the "kahonies" to HALO into North Vietnam at night and told him they should select someone willing to do that. I took a lot of harassment for turning down the "elite" HALO school. Three years later, I was starting my 3rd Vietnam tour and was with MACVSOG-CCN. We needed a 7-man HALO team for a very dangerous mission in Laos. We could only find 3 volunteers. Back in the States HALO qualified walked around like princes profiling. We heard every excuse know to man why they couldn't volunteer. It wasn't until SMG Billy Waugh took over and "recruited" HALO qualified men that we got the team. My Point: Only take training you are willing to preform in combat!
Sir, you are an excellent author. You're awesome.
Hey Buck, I'm currently a Marine doing my second enlistment but hoping to go 18X after the next four years.
Just wanted to say that you and Zach's videos keep me motivated when I feel like I'm never gonna get there, so keep it up and thank you bro 💪💪

Give Chosen Soldier by Dick Couch a read. It's all about the 18x pipeline. Good luck.

Can't wait for the book, I've been counting down the days sine Christmas.

Exactly
I'm hoping to join as a 68w (Option 40) and later transfer into an 18D but unfortunately I have a juvenile felony so I need to get the right guy on the right day
Hopefully you fail. The Rangers don't need SEAL wannabes.
@@profd65do you know how to read? Who are you replying too?😂
Hey Buck, are Guard teams set up in the same fashion? With 19th and 20th Groups multiple locations would specialties be more prevalent at different locations? (i.e. more mountain teams in Colorado's 19th Group location vs more dive teams in California?) Thanks for all of the valuable info you put out!
Excel where you are assigned, regardless of your preference. In combat, you may assigned another worse bad situation sometime you didn't choose, that will need you to excel at it also. How you perform is a demonstration of your character over personal preference.
Everyone wanted to be on the HALO Team, but they always wanted the veterans!
I went straight to 7th Group HQ because I spoke Spanish

I also hated mountain climbing especially in the dark F#%K That!

Does anyone else rewatch pretty much every video from Sean cus I do
Same, heights scare the shit outta me but free fall is fun
buck could you make a video talking about what its like for officers in SFAS and the Q course? Do you think you could get a SF officer on? Love your shit, thank you buck!
I get the same feeling. Butterflies in my stomach looking down a cliff. But nothing at all free falling.

Can you explain each MOS inside the ODA???

Its funny you say that about the mountains i was a civilian skydive person freefall no problem rock climbing screw that
Just downloaded the new Cleared Hot podcast, with you as the guest. Can’t wait to listen to it.

Another great video I’m still hoping Buck will talk about the different Groups and their histories a bit
I’ll get there bro!
Hey, any chance on future video, on what’s like to work with foreign special forces? Like Canadian, British, training and doing real missions?💚👍
Are you forced into dive school even if you’re not great in the water?
I’ve been waiting on this video

Appreciate it!
I'm not military, I'm a dumbass civilian, I agree! I too hate climbing but skydiving is fun
Why aren’t all SF teams at least MFF certified? All the other small-unit spec ops units are (AFSOC and NSW)
Actually right now it's mandatory for all Green Berets to be freefall qualified.
And I think Army Rangers should get MFF certification too.
@@dallasyap3064 is there a memo or source you can provide a link to stating this? Because that’s one of the things between SF and NSW or AFSOC I’m having a hard time choosing. I like that NSW and AFSOC guys come standard out of training with MFF and dive capabilities, but I like the SF mission set the most. But yeah I agree, it’s definitely a useful skill set. But then again too, rangers usually are inserted in high numbers, not sure how useful MFF is over the regular static line jumps they do
@@fdangleshadang-a-lang7149 yes NSWC & AFSOC members come out all trained in freefall and dive. For AFSOC it's understandable bcoz they have unique skill sets and are sometimes required to be embedded with other SOF, so yeah I agree they need those skills. 1 thing about NSWC and SF I find it strange is all Navy SEALs are trained in dive and freefall and many are trained mountain/cold weather, while Green Berets have to divide it by ODAs, different ODAs for different special infiltration techniques. For Army Rangers they deploy in multiple squads, a platoon, which I think is still feasible to use freefall insertion. Cuz they also do direct action, special reconnaissance and counter-terrorism too. And it will be good for them to have freefall or dive capability to insert into enemy territory undetected. Static line yes its useful, but should be use when it comes to operations like airborne assaults, airfield seizures and usually in a large scale, company size or larger. And obviously these static line missions are not designed to insert troops discreetly. But when doing direct action, special reconnaissance, counter-terrorism or even personnel recovery they should use freefall or dive. For my 1st comment u were asking for source, I'll put it below.
www.army.mil/article/88636/special_forces_qualification_course_to_incorporate_military_free_fall_training
@@dallasyap3064 yeah, It is weird green berets have to divide up insertion methods. Wish it wasn’t the case, but I understand because they have a lot of other things to be training on rather than constantly maintaining proficiency at these.
But thanks for the link bro!

I think HALO/Free-Fall is required for all 18 series now. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m not SF but my Spirit Guide is......
Are you able to switch teams?
Hahah Fuckin' New Guy, I like the channel acronym.
Can HALO ODA’s start from the ground? Like do they have to freefall into combat? I want to be in a mountain ODA and want to know if I would do stuff like combat off a mountain
I believe it depends on the mission. If the freefall team needs to be inserted discreetly behind enemy lines, then freefall gonna be the choice.

funny story: when i was Drill Sergeanting at Ft Jackson (POG central) I had a E-4 prior service dude come through my platoon. he was in Air Force, but turns out he was going through PJ pipeline but didn’t finish because of family reasons. BUT he already had Airborne, SCUBA, and HALO. pretty sure he was the most stacked basic trainee ever.

As a guy who is really thinking of trying out for SF, I appreciate your videos.
Are you training now?
Hey buck can you speak on the differences between each sf group? Love the vids, thank you for everything you do for all us wannabes
Will do 👊
My uncle served in the 5th Special Forces Group as a Special Forces Medic in Vietnam and Laos. I remember he used to tell me about some of the training he went through. I’m not sure if it still is true today, but back then SF medics were the only personnel other than actual surgeons to be permitted to perform surgery on the battlefield. He went through this final test where the instructors would take a goat, give it anesthetics, and then inflict a large amount of bodily trauma on it such as blunt force and shooting through the legs and stomach. They would then bring it out and whatever SF medic was testing would have to diagnose the injury’s and then keep it alive for 12 hours, after which they would inflict more trauma on it and then the medic would have to keep it alive for about 8 more hours.
My dad was an sf medic in the 70s 7th, 12th and 10th group the first day of training they dropped like 90 guys with a math test
And that’s why people don’t talk about it
SF medics are legit. You can be a junior enlisted guy and learn procedures only surgical residents do after 8 years of school.
It’s true…. Nicknamed Goat Lab.
goat school
Here after the Andy podcast, fucking banger bro.
Can you do a break down comparing the SF company and BN structure to what we all know in the regular Army?
It was always my impression that the MFF teams got their pick of personnel based on the fact that pretty much everyone wanted to go there for the "cool mguy" factor. I was MFF qualified, but I spent almost all of my time on a dive team. I did some climbing/mountaineering training, but I never was good at it. I didn't like it, and as short as I am, it was really difficult for me. I did think the teams in 10th group who did the skiing and snowmobile and snow cave stuff were interesting (even tho I would never want to do it). You should get a 10th group guy on here to talk about that stuff. Mob teams were huge in 5th group after the 1st gulf war, but every 5th group team that went to kuwait in the 90's (everyone pretty much went there every other year) got the full issue of GMV's, dirt bikes, crew served weapons, etc., and once afg kicked off, pretty much every team in SF became "mobility qualified", or at least did the mission. I loved being on a dive team. It was scary and very difficult. In my experience, divers tend to be pretty hard core in everything. People with "the bubble" tend to get more other schools that have nothing to do with diving (if they want them) like Ranger, SFARTEC, SFSC, etc. Its because the leadership knows that if you fail, it won't be because you are a pussy. If I had a non-dive qualed guy on my team, that guy wouldn't get any schools except things like bus driver and -2 until/unless he completed CDQC. I'll be fucked if I send a guy like that to JM or SFSC and he never graduates dive school and gets sent to another team- I just trained up someone else's guy and burned my team's slots to do it. Because I was a qualified diver, I was able to do over 12 years of ODA time. Being a diver makes you more difficult to replace on a team, so if you are a good team member, you will stay there for a LONG time, while people on other teams will be doing the revolving door thing, and end up on the B team, S3, etc. When I left a dive team (the first time, after 6 years) I didn't go to the B team- I went to the scuba locker, where I got more schools and continued to get dive pay, and train in the mission. Like a dive team, not just "anyone" can work at a scuba locker- you need to be dive qualified. Anyone can work at the B team, Bn schools, etc. When you do company deployments OCONUS, the dive team will often find themselves in a coastal area (jn other words, at the beach) teaching amphibious/waterborne ops to the HN forces, instead of living in a tent in the desert or in some crappy jungle or on a mountain top freezing your ass off with the rest of the company. I always advise new guys who are in shape and have the balls and commitment to tell the SGM they want to be a diver, and to be prepared to gut it out and put the work in with 100% commitment.
What team were you on? You're giving a hard stolen valor vibe.
@@mmarchioly731 I was on 4 different teams in 3 different groups- 20 SFGA (started in NG), 5th SFGA, and 7th SFGA (prior to BRAC). Between 5th and 7th I did a SWC tour. I also worked in a dive locker and sniper det at different times. I won't be sharing team #s or timelines here, but I will say that I left shortly after the 4 digit designations started and retired over a decade ago. Don't know (or care) where you get a "stolen valor vibe" from. Perhaps from your vast experience of "how things really are in Group". Tell us about your time in the regiment.

You mentioned climbing Flatiron. Where is this? The reason I ask is because we have a Flatiron out here in AZ and its a real bitch to climb.
Are your strengths and weaknesses taken into consideration when you're assigned to a Team?
Yes and no - depends on the SGM/CSM. Good ones will weigh you versus their needs. Shitty ones will just throw you against an open slot without consideration of the 2nd or 3rd order effects. Case in point; SGM puts a brand new 18D from the 18X program in the Company Senior Medical slot. Kid didn’t know shit about soldiering, being an NCO, and was insecure about it so he had a chip in his shoulder when anyone tried to mentor him.
Just listened to your Cleared Hot Podcast with Andy Stumpf. Gotta say, looking forward to the book 🤙

Thank you for all your honesty.
P.S. FUCK MOUNTAINS! NEVER AGAIN IS CORRECT! 😂
How often are dive teams utilized in SF? I would think that SEALS and PJs would be the go to for maritime operations.
Dive teams only use their diving capability as an insertion and/or extraction method, not as really a maritime operations like ship takedowns, oil rigs and ships sabotage etc.
It's not necessarily oceans. Dives can occur in other bodies of water on land which the Army operates. Also Ranger Regiment has a few dive qualified Rangers.
Cant wait for the book.
Fresh cut!
Awesome info this is something you don't see much about SF pretty much anywhere on the web (as goes with a lot of your shared info!)
Keep up the great work dude!
Which seems like the best medic life
SARC, 18D, PJ, or Ranger medic?
I think Ranger medic because you get to conduct HVT raids and save lives at the same time.
Ranger regiment medics usually because the medics there focus on medicine and Trauma compared to the other unity’s medics. Plus the regiment as the most successful medical treatments in combat and they have done multiple things that have changed the ways special operations and conventional military medicine is taught in the DoD. So they literally wrote the book on a lot of things
Hey buck. Thanks for the good insight and motivation!

Sometimes it’s the guys on the team! My first team was an SOT team, which apparently doesn’t exist anymore, and I was super happy to be there. The guys were heroes. I won’t lie though, when the free fall team sergeant asked me if I wanted a job, I had my shit there in about 30 seconds.
