    Idk I gained a ton of respect for Emma throughout the season. She didn’t have an ED because she specifically had body dysmorphia and wanted to be skinny, it was because it was her actual power and it “made her feel strong” or special. Obviously that could still be a metaphorical parallel but it at least goes beyond it. I feel like they did a good job at also making having an ED extremely unfun and damaging like how Emma’s feelings just nose-dive when someone asks her to shrink or she mentions teeth erosion and such.
    When she said “my mother taught me how to purge to shrink” I was like wow, this is LAYERS! Seeing how her mom is always trying to influence her into chasing perfection and success any way possible it just all added up why she tied her powers to purging. Finding out her powers are tied to her self image (how gorging food made her grow because she felt big/fat, and the opposite) and getting talked down into feeling small made her shrink, I feel like they can pivot her out of the ED dialogue by never making her have to shrink again. She really seems to enjoy being big, and tying her powers to confidence rather than food is a good journey for her to take.

      @marielaberge8236 4 месяца назад

      Yeah I feel like the way her power works and is intertwined in this exploration of ED brings to mind a kind of literal "emotional eating", where she finds herself "consumed" by other people's perception of her and how it makes her feel. It's interesting that even growing to a gigantic size couldn't protect her from everything. Her vulnerability even at the height of her power kinda foreshadows how becoming popular tied her self-esteem to being perceived as superhuman, which exposed her insecurities since it ended up shrinking her confidence once Sam no longer saw her as a hero

    What really pissed me off about Cate was when she compelled Dean Shetty to slice her neck and she didn’t allow Marie to save her. It was really messed up that she made her relive her trauma, then brushed it off like it was nothing.

      Dean shetty was evil as fuck and deserved that though, willingly making innocent kids fucking sick and suffer and die in terror and not giving a rats ass, it was sad for marie but there couldn't have been a better fate for the Deen. Also marie isn't an innocent person either, she chose to use her powers to kill the rogue supes instead of subduing them because it benefited her goal of meeting her sister again.

    • @Daniel-bt8yq
      @Daniel-bt8yq 9 месяцев назад +16

    • @amrechtmn
      @amrechtmn 9 месяцев назад +31

      @@psychosocial2443 can you even blame Marie for wanting to see her sister again? Whether or not her brutality was warranted is up for debate but you're seriously acting like her wanting to see her sister isn't a strong enough goal to want to stop the rouge supes? I think that even if it was the "morally right thing to do" she should have no reason for not wanting to do whatever it takes to not only stop the rouge supes from hurting more people. Even if she was trying to simply subdue them, do we really know if she would be able to just subdue them due to her lack of knowledge of her powers? Marie is 18 or possibly 19 going into her first year of college. She's only had them for 4 or 5 years and still is barely able to grasp the full extent of her powers. So with that knowledge I cannot in good conscience call her a bad person for killing people who are also murdering other people in cold blood.

    • @psychosocial2443
      @psychosocial2443 9 месяцев назад +2

      @amrechtmn But she knows the circumstances that those rogue supes have been put through, she was at risk of ending up being just like them herself. She was willing to save Deen shetty despite KNOWING everything she was planning and how she tortured people just like herself. Also I find it very odd that she's suddenly capable of using her powers to kill in the last episode despite that being pretty much her biggest truama in life. I don't hate marie, she's actually probably my 2nd favorite character after cate but people aren't critical enough with her character to the same degree as the others.

    I’m surprised to hear you say you didn’t like Marie in the first two episodes and that she didn’t feel like a main character. The first episode is literally 90% Marie's pov. We meet every single character when Marie meets them. We cut away from her pov very few times but for the most part beat for beat we are discovering this world and these people through Marie and Marie only. That's how every episode goes we discover things as Marie does for the most part. I found her very easy to have empathy for and the way I found myself invested in her journey was what had me binging all the episodes. Plus she is clearly still very affected by her past trauma at the beginning of show which is why it may seem she’s limited in her powers as they are very rooted in that. I also heavily disagree with the notion that she was constantly putting herself in bad positions when the one mistake she makes is breaking curfew and going to a party. Other than she literally follows the straight and narrow and actively avoids unnecessary drama when she tells andre and jordan to fuck off and to leave her be.

    I think the reason we don’t get a lot of college shows is because some screenwriters are taught not to set stories in colleges. I like gen V but I think Vaught/superpowers are the unifying principle.
    In a normal college show you have a pre-defined amount of seasons per character so to keep the show going you have to always introduce new ones.
    Great video btw!

    See I stopped watching the boys after ep 3 cause i genuinely did not care about anything that was going like it was all midly intriguiging but the characters didnt grab me or interest me in any way. Now with GenV i was hooked from the first scene. The story telling was sooo good and every character was so interesting and compelling. Plus the talk on social media just added to it once again bring back weekly releases please and thank you. The hate on Andre had me cackling every week too. Im so glad its getting a season 2 😆😆😆

    something i noticed that was really interesting, just how both shows juxtaposed one another in terms of the main characters and their motives. going from “we must take back what these corrupt supes did to us and whatever shitty thing they did to others like us with no power, physically and politically” to “the non-supes are abusing us and no one is doing anything about it, the truth must be out there.” it really switches up from the main series so u can see it from another perspective without the bias against supes from the past 3 seasons.

    I would love an Emma and Starlight crossover because they both have similar backgrounds and mothers who are practically the same. I think Emma could learn a lot from someone who has been through it before. I hope they can keep the shows separate with little crossovers till it all comes together in the end because it can be too much to have to watch 1-2 episodes from different shows to get the full story whereas as it stands now you don't need the info from Gen V to learn of what is going on in the boys. the CW's DC universe did many crossovers with their shows but when rewatching just one of any of those shows those episodes are jarring to watch in the middle of a season and you either skip them or seek out the other parts of the episode in other shows. If they can keep the seasons sequential like this till the end it would be smoother to watch over again.

    ive never watched the boys (i plan to now), but i was so intrigued by Gen V and it did not disappoint. I know that the Boys is more satirical, so I was pleasantly surprised when Gen V was a little bit more serious, like yes it did have its moments of crazy chaoticness, but the social commentary was really impactful, like how for Marie, she would cut herself to use her powers, and she also did it a lot if she was upset, referring to self harm, and also with Emma. She basically was sculpted by her mother to have an ED to become popular, referencing how social media puts pressure on ppl, especially women, to have a certain body in order to succeed in media. If I had to complain about ANYTHING, i just wished that the episodes were a little longer, but thats it. Also, spoiler......
    im SO MAD that they corrupted my baby Sam. I was really rooting for him and i hope that he comes back to the right side soon

    Piggy backing off of the idea that setting the show in college is better than high school because we don’t have to worry about the parents, I absolutely agree that we don’t have to think of them in terms of limiting our characters in the traditional sense of having to listen to your parents, but I love that each character (save the Riordan brothers), got to show us representations of viewers with our own parents. Gender queer people can probably relate a lot to the scenes with Jordan’s parents, the high expectations of Andre’s father wanting him to follow in his footsteps, all of it includes very cool insights to the pressures that Gen Z feels on top of the weight and hurdles of being young people in this decade.
    Great commentary! I’ve been waiting for someone to highlight the social commentary and the importance of this show with representation for Gen V. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts when Season 2 comes out!

    I had finally caught up with every Voughtverse show between catching up with this show every week. And one thing I will say is that the writers seem to HATE Warner Bros because of the way they portray the Vought company. Vought has the greatest, most influential superheroes in the world. And the Seven, most of them anyway, look like and have the powers as the Justice League. With a neverending amount of products from billion dollar blockbuster movies to...shampoo? And yet, the company is constantly in damage control mode because the image of what a superhero is supposed to be is constantly getting ruined, either because of their decisions or the heroes themselves. I don't think they predicted this part, but a few of said heroes have literally assaulted people but the company doesn't give them any real consequences for their actions and lets them keep their careers playing hero. And I can't think of a better comparison than Warner Bros!

    The finale being 30ish minutes i think is due to re edits. We know a big fight scene for Jordan was cut based on comments made by their stunt doubles but also London Thor said it was 'Different to what I shot'. The rumour ive geard is that Sam was meant to be the main villain of the episode and be defeated by the others in the episode, but then when they began on the boys season 4 they changed their minds and decided to keep his character alive. It makes srnse since he's so powerful all season and then gets taken out by Andre using a cattle prod when we've literally seen someone try use the same thing against him in the past and get killed before it could take effect. Both shows filmed last year, so I do wonder if that scene was a reshoot?

    All good points.
    I’d like to also add that when it comes to little dystopian sort of media that tries to pit superpowered people down as the oppressed minority, they usually sort of fall flat. I mean we obviously see Marie kill her entire family with her period, and almost every person with V has a story of accidentally, effortlessly ending innocent lives. A lot of shows ignore the actual danger of the oppressed class, and just portray the normies as evil haters.
    I like that the show doesn’t shy away from the issues. it really gives weight to the principles argument for a world without super-powered people so we can empathize with both sides. At the end of the day it’s like we can’t blame either of them for being hurt, and we remember who the blame belongs to.
    The greedy rich capitalist idiots who wrecked society for their own benefit while the people under the system fight each other. I think the show is pretty smart

    I also picked up Jordan’s relationship with their family and the connection with Asian culture and its value of boys over girls. So, of course Jordan’s father would view Jordan taking their female form as a slap in the face to the “honor” of the family.

    Emma and Marie’s powers are an allegory on common women problems Marie feeling guilty over something she couldn’t control ( ie a woman on a period) her getting her powers on her first period is wild. But I did read somewhere that they did that on purpose so they could add a dynamic of problematic but normal issues.

    Some of my takeaways: Now I really want for Marie to be the one who eventually kills Homelander. I also have this fantasy fight in my head in which she takes out Butcher/Supercancer. She is one of the most powerful supes in the franchise. She just hasn't yet learned how to use them. But she is learning. Sam is basically a good guy, but has been radicalized in a very understandable manner to an indefensible agenda. I do worry about the lingering affects of that push to "feel nothing." Emma is the best. I would like to see her use the giant mode more. She was even able to overpower and restrain Sam when she was 20 feet tall. I agree about Jordan. Love the character. However, they are way to obsessed with ranking against their peers at the expense of positive bonding with their peers. I'm hoping their relationship with Marie has a positive effect on them in that regard.

    Absolutely LOVED this show. Quick note tho - Homelander isn't racist. He doesn't believe that white people are superior, he believes that HE is superior (he has a god complex). It's why he wasn't ever super bothered/on board with Stormfront's rhetoric about white genocide etc. He doesn't care about humans as a species, regardless of their race. Him attacking Marie and siding with Cate was because Cate's side was supe supremacy, which Homelander is even more strongly about since S3 of the Boys.

    • @maya95
      @maya95 9 месяцев назад

      @@reviewcentral8406 I'm not saying that he isn't racist at all, and it's the boys/gen v, so no doubt that it was an international mirror. Probably should have said he isn't 'simply' racist. I just feel like simply boiling him choosing Cate over Marie and that interaction down to him being racist misses the bigger prejudice he has. He's basically every '-ist' you could be, but again because he thinks of supes and more specifically himself as far superior. From what we've seen in the boys, I feel like his hierarchy is: Homelander, able-bodied 'all American' supes, American supes, other supes, American humans, other humans.
