Brilliant and over 100 years old. The song's melody is timeless. The silent film adds to the undoubted charm of it. I hope the little baby at the end had a long life, he looked a nice little chap.
My grandfather was a musician and singer in a time this song was popular. He met a young woman (my grandmother) at a dance he was playing. That night he took his band and serenaded her with this song. He asked her to marry and she told him to go home and read Ruth in his bible. He found her answer there and they spent their honeymoon in Seven Springs North Carolina where her often played music. He taught me this song and I sing it often at my performances. It sitll brings a tear Ed Terry
What a wonderfully moving song this is. My father used to sing it to my sister and I when we were little kids. We never knew that it was a song from World War I. I am a hard-hearted, tough-minded women, but listening to this brought tears to my eyes. Thanks.
No. This song was written during WWI, and published in 1918. Look up the cover art for the sheet music and you'll see that the man in the picture is wearing a uniform.
Same here. I'm something of an old lady. Myself, that this song makes me tear up too. My parents were married during WWII. They are both long gone now, but this makes me think of them.
To think that this Recording is over a Hundred years old and it's still as Powerful as ever and a Reminder off the two world wars which was futile as there are no Winner's in War's as I lost two Great Uncles in the 1914-18 war one was killed at sea and the other one was a Dispatch Rider who lied about his age as he was just 16 when he was killed and I lost a Uncle in the 1939-45 war when he trod on a Landmine and left a Widow and a young son and My late father was one of the first one's to Liberate Belsom Bardon and he had Knightmares for over fifty years until his own death on Monday April 29th 1996 just short of his 71st Birthday
Recorded Nov 1918, issued on Edison disc 50512 . Also 'dubbed' to a cylinder master & issued as Edison Blue Amberol 3670 (which is what you hear in this case - the disc is better sounding) . Vernon Dalhart was later known for his "country" or "hillbilly" recordings, and was one of the most prolific recording artists of the 1920s.
Was adopted as a song by Huddersfield Town fans on their 1920 FA Cup run, with a few lyric changes. Amazingly is still sung by them at games to this day.
My family used to hold hoe-downs at the local grange - my dad and a few other relatives came out with this song during one of them and I always thought it a very poignant song, never failing to make me smile and tear-up at the same time. Thank you very much for bringing back a piece of the past through your post ;D
There's a song in the land of the lily Each sweetheart has heard with a sigh Over high garden walls this sweet echo falls As a soldier boy whispers goodbye Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu When the clouds roll by I'll come to you Then the skies will seem more blue Down in Lover's Lane, my dearie Wedding bells will ring so merrily Ev'ry tear will be a memory So wait and pray each night for me Till we meet again Though goodbye means the birth of a teardrop Hello means the birth of a smile And the smile will erase the tear blighting trace When we meet in the after awhile Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu When the clouds roll by I'll come to you Then the skies will seem more blue Down in Lover's Lane, my dearie Wedding bells will ring so merrily Ev'ry tear will be a memory So wait and pray each night for me Till we meet again

I don't know who the boy is, but the girl is played by the very famous Mary Pickford. She was married to Douglas Fiarbanks, with whom she founded Universal Pictures. Their son was Douglas Fairbanks Jr., But I don't know a y more about her family.

Hello means the birth of a smile
And the smile will erase the tear blighting trace

2021? anyone?
Looks to me like the opening sequence may well have been shot at the "Lone Cypress" near Pebble Beach, California
Strangely, this song is sung in the part of "Auntie Mame" where her husband Beau falls from the mountain. I've always loved it!
A 👍 song sung by a fine voice duet👋
The Love Light is the best movie!
