Since steraks and sundered got nerfed, the 1 v 2+'s are way less forgiving. I almost always prioritize my flash for the flash ult combo, but now it seems like you have to use it to avoid damage. Def makes Illaoi a little harder to play. At least in my experience.
Good sustain, strong trades, Conq isn't good enough for how hard it is to stack usually. Still can be taken into tanks. But really, if you like it, take it :) nothing is make or break.
it makes her low lvl trades with just w really good and the whole laning phase smoother. The additional small rune is better from resolve instead of precision due to the removal of legend:tenacity. In fact due to illaoi not necessarily needing tenacity it was usually better even before the removal

Was that ever a thing? Never noticed the spirit giving XP in my 2 years of playing, nor would it make sense

Sounds like the only champion mechanic directly increasing XP then (except Zilean and Nilah) and most likely a bug. Makes sense that they removed it.
