Xmal Deutschland - Polarlicht

- Another great German band I decided to post here - is the punk/rock/goth legend Xmal Deutschland, admired more abroad than in their homeland and founded in 1980 by five female musicians from Hamburg. The charismatic singer Anja Huwe was often compared to Siouxsie Sioux.
The band lasted in changed formation till 1989.
"Polarlicht" is from album Viva, released in 1987.
One of if not the most underrated band in Germany.
They might be reforming later this year.
@@woody5831wonderful news
In terms of music, it's the most German thing that's ever been German.
By the time I had discovered Xmal Deutschland via the 1987 album Viva. The end war nigh. The Siouxsie comparisons can't stop this iconic German band from being visually and musically enigmatic. Dark brooding and beautiful. Anja, Manuela & Fiona goth-girl power of another level. God I wish I had seen them live.
To this day I keep hearing "Órale" instead of "Polarlicht." That kind of makes me happy.
Same here.
Órale!!!
tambocha , me too hahaha but i love it so much she could pee down my back hahahaha
Jajaja orale man
Now that you've mentioned it..
Cannot believe its 26 years since this great band disbanded, very sad day for lovers of the group and genre. I did get to see Xmal 9 times and i cherish every time.
How I could see them live back in the days.
This song brings me good memories of the past!
I wish this group comes back and tours again!
Inspirava-me as mais belas imagens.
Oraleeeeeee oooraleeeeeeeeeeeeeeee oooorale, ooo chale chale chaleeeee
Jajaja ala webadas😂
Jajajauauauajjauauajajua

musically, the 80s will go down as this century's greatest decade. Love it!!!
Written in 2010...🤔
@@mechanicaldavid4827 still true in 2023 :P

Beautiful song and melody. Put me in a trance. Brings back so much memory.
BACK TO MY GOOD YOUNG TIMES... LONG LIVE XMAL DEUTSCHLAND!!!
This is the first song I ever heard from XMD many years ago, and I became a fan as soon as I got the Peel Sessions EP.
I've always loved Anja's haunting vocals!
saw X Mal many times in the 1980's after hearing on Peel . Excellent band clearly influenced by Siouxsie .
+Keith Bate Manuela Rickers was definitely a female John Mc Geoch.
+julosx Yes but far sexier !
+julosx Did you ever see Lush ? saw them many times. Good band and had a "bit of a thing" for Emma
+Keith Bate I'm a MASSIVE Lush fan. I saw them only twice but wasn't as fan of them back then as I am now, which I can't explain. I rediscovered them in 2007, thanks the internet. And yeah, each and every decent 1990 young man had to feel "a bit of a thing" for both Miki and Emma since these girls just had it all, music wise, look wise, mind wise and whatever.
+julosx Well that period late 80's/early 90's was choke full of great bands eg REM, Pixies, Throwing Muses, Dead can Dance, Husker Du, House of Love , Nirvana, X mal, Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star, Wall of Voodoo etc etc. saw all of these except Nirvana and that list includes the best bands I have ever seen. And I am still a regular gig goer 25 years later.
Funny you mentioned Manuela Rickers . That women was "sex on legs " for me (LOL)
I love this band so much....her wailing draws me in closer...
I love this band. Such great music.
20 years i'm searching for the title, just knowing it was x-mal deutschland !!! I'm so happy to know it by now !!
What a fucking song !! i miss so much the new wave/ cold wave times .....
once we had also such a great goth club here in bratislava, but those times lie also a couple years ago... :)
great song. proud of my German heritage!
you shouldn't be.....read some books
Stalingrad remember? 😂
@@thomasandersen6719Nah he definitely should.
Brilliant, great to remember them
Of all the bands that came from my hometown Hamburg Xmal are still my favourite. I would love to see them doing a revival gig some day ...
Hamburg is my favorite city in Deutschland...of the 14 I got to know pretty well ❌❌❌
my favourite X-Mal Deutschland song, together with "Incubus succubus" ! ! !

She sounds more like Elizabeth Fraser than like Siouxie Sioux, at least on this track.
Eir Apps, i think Elizabeth sounded more angelic than anja , but lisa garrard from dead can dance i think is spot on for xmal.
Yes !!! I hear the the same Eir Apps!! People seem to have not listened to the early cocteau twins "post-punk" albums....
Disagree
All 3 sound like each other, bonus Toyah
Very cool . Sounds like Siouxsie
exacly !!!
They were even better than the Banshees if you ask me.
There were great (including on stage)...but it doesn't compare..sorry...:-)
I dunno... I love siouxsie but this shit is amazing
Amandine Berry , from the look of the Bauhaus and your comment on the banshees , it appears you definitely know whats good 👍
Xmal Deutschland!!! This is One of my favorite bands.
''Viva'' album is the best! This is the greatest band in history of cold wave!
they've always reminded me alot more of cocteau twins than siouxie sioux
Not at all man
Sounds a lot like Garlands-era Cocteau Twins for sure.
Xmal is better the siouxie
@@jordanl5127 nah man, come on.
Siouxsie started it all and she could actually sing live on stage.
Anja Huwe sounds so much like Siouxsie Sioux.
She is like a German version.
That's the problem
a bit of She Past Away too
...and mellie mel
A way better...
Fantastic song, wish i was born earlier ,thank god we can listen to that in Greece
I was a Goth in the UK in the mid-late 80s. Saw Xmal live a few times. They were definately a Goth band or, if you will, had an overall Goth following / fan base. Same crowd who went to see Siouxsie, The Cure, Alien Sex Fiend, Sisters of Mercy, Sex Gang Children ....
What do you think about neo nazis and skin heads? Could you tell me? Ok I like rock AND roll but in the scene
I was a glam pop fan and I also lobed tjem
Yep not a bad band. I caught their final gig @ Wheatley collage near Oxford. R.I.P.
Sortudo.
@dimensional X struggling to think actually. There weren't many bands that sounded like them. Maybe early Cocteau twins, garlands era, not much but it sprang to mind.
Skeletal Family as well.
these guys rocked, graduating from the 4AD class with clan of xymox, et al. this could even pass as an early twins track; she's got a litle liz in her voice. ))
This is what is great about the internet. In my real life, I know one other person who knows of Xmal D. On the internet, obscure artists seem a lot less obscure.
I remember the first time I heard this tune and thought Siouxsie and the Banshees made a new album. A moment later I realized the vocals were in German. XD
I love this tune, but I strongly prefer the Peel Sessions version. I would love to see that posted if you have it.
great themmm the bestt
Most beautiful experience.
My favorite band !!
Love this song vrry much!

She was my first crush back in these days...
Fantastic song, wish i was born earlier
Jestem uzależniony od tego kawałka, no coś niesamowitego.....
Still have the album! Brilliant stuff.
i totally agree. there is a big empy gap after such bands left the scene...
gran banda sin duda alguna, me encanta

Thanks! I haven't heard this track before! (I only have Fetisch, and Tocsin).
R.i.p lux 😢
XMal Deutschland on 4AD = best German band ever.
great band
💜
ater punk or goth?
they have often been compared with Siouxsie & The Banshees, but with this song they reached the quality of Siouxsie & Co.
Kick arse Goth band!
:) Love this!
Brazil love
@VlogKing I was actually talking about if Xmal CAME after Siouxie. in other words if they started after them, which I doubt they did because this music sounds similar to their's, only not as good.
“ORALE…..
ORALE….
OOOOHRALEEEEeeeEEEE”
the best is ORIENT,,, but I love'em all... 4ever
Orale!!!!, chido chingon!!!!
....yes
excelente 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Do Alasca até Kiruna!!!!!!!!
Of course Anja was influenced by Siouxsie Sioux (who wasn't?). And, why do you think Xmal went to London to 'make it'? London had the most vibrant indie scene, John Peel plugged away for the underdogs and the bands just kicked ass!
🇩🇪DEUTSCHLAND🇩🇪♥
