- Tommy Thompson was Wisconsin’s governor for 14 years at the end of the 20th century, the longest-serving governor in the state’s history. He went on to serve in President George W. Bush’s cabinet and has seen the party change over time with the rise of Donald Trump.
Thompson talks with Cap Times associate editor John Nichols about the trajectory of both the party and Wisconsin just before the 2024 election.

Interesting how career politicians such as Thompson continually complain about how government is so terrible, yet still do everything in their power to be in a government office. Thompson, in his first term as Governor, doubled the state's Driver's License fees (From basically $25.00 to $50.00). It now sits at close to $100. He also was sharply critical of his opponent, Governor Tony Earl, for providing funding to update one of two of Wisconsin's prisons at that time (1985/86). Yet, by the time Thompson left office in 2001/2002, the total number of Wisconsin's prisons had increased from 2 to 6! Thompson also was an early supporter of welfare "reform", putting in work requirements in order to qualify for welfare, which he championed as "Workfare".
