Brazillian is the only thing I will use for fretboards, It makes an incredible difference to the sound, especially when paired with a unicorn horn nut.
I guess if you're at that end of the market, it isn't BS, but for the vast majority of us who build. buy and actually PLAY guitars, this sort of stuff is reserved for those who value the value of the instrument and the bragging rights that go with it above all else. I have friends who have vintage cars but can't drive them because it would devalue them. Convoluted.
That offer sounds like an April 1st-only deal...but sadly it isn't. How are they side-stepping CITES, do you know? You'd probably look good in suspenders, Kevin. :)
What I know about CITES regulations, you could lose in the bottom of a thimble. I assume that this material has been in this country for decades and may have been purchased from a private stash somewhere. I recall many years ago, a lumber buyer from Martin Guitar telling me that Brazilian Rosewood move around from time to time and that they had turned away offers to buy the very same lot of it more than once, having seen it several times. He said that could actually recognize many of the same planks.
@@thepragmaticluthier Can never tell with your sense of humour (midnight repairs anyone?!) Glad you got hold of some Brazilian, I'm sure peeps will dig it. I'll still go for the Ziricote and fly around the world with my axe in peace 😺
Got that email also but wasn't tempted. The only valid case for it is you have a sucker, I mean customer that will pay a $1k upcharge for that $300 piece of wood!
LMAO, so my un-educated opinion is that 80% of the sound or tonal quality comes from the soundboard and how it is handled and everything else contributes a small amount. But hey if you like the look of something enough to spend big bucks on it have fun.. I got notified of this "sale" as well, you could pair the fingerboard with the $8500.00 "tree" back and sides.. I always get a kick out of all the voodoo around wood...
Thanks Kevin needed that laugh today
Pragmatic and true.
Great video! Thanks for keeping us grounded in reality!
I know a lot about electricity. I'm good at grounding:)
What was used pre war?
Why do they sound so good?

Yes, but do you use Brazilian Rosewood salvaged from old German Church Pews as Martin did in the 50's and 60's? :)
getting back to practical,,, could you do a video on how you sharpen your scrapers and gouges? thanks
Thanks for that suggestion. I'll put it on my list.
I love it Kevin. Keep calling BS where it applies.

You forgot to mention the price for the offering on Rosewood back and side sets. You think the fingerboard price is extravagant!
I can't even afford to MENTION those prices:)
I'm sure it's incredible wood, but that's an incredible, incredibly high price for what an awful lot of good, less expensive wood would work just fine

Who is the supplier?
I think propriety dictates that I shouldn't name them, but if you Google guitar making tools and supplies, I'm sure you'll find them.
I'll stick with Brazilian - I enjoy fingerboards that sometimes eventually split. Seriously, though, thank you for the wonderful laugh!
Well said! I''ll take Ziricote at a fraction of the price
In case you thought I was kidding about the sale it's for real.

I agree with you, but the lure of acquiring the extremely rare, unique, old and beautiful is strong. And when you've got money to piss away....
