Knife Prty is truly one of my faves! Rosemary, Entombed, be Quiet and Drive, Passenger, Phantom Bride, the Spell of Mathematics… the list goes on. Deftones is GOATed
Deftones isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But the uniqueness is underrated and truly one of my favorites. Growing up there weren’t many Hispanics making music like this and it was my gravity. Hey Imma 90s boi
Sex Metal is a perfect description of this band. I have to recommend You've Seen the Butcher by them, it's got that sexy/cool vibe y'all are talking about. Thanks for the great videos!
Ponder this: this album is 21 years old. When this came out, minds were effing blown. There was nothing like this before. These beats, chords, vocals were unheard of. Hard AF. At the time, this was like a portal into another dimension.
Growing up a metal fan in the 90s, it seemed like The Deftones were the opening act for every band I went to see. I probably saw them 20 times. R.I.P Chi Cheng. Incredible bass player. Loved how he added completely different melodies a lot instead of just following along to the guitar lines like soo many rock bass players do. My Own Summer was the song that really got them on the map. The pit would EXPLODE when they played that song.
It's the drums. Abe has a hip hop vibe to him. The kick, the snare, the ghost notes, off beat. He is the man and he blends well with Stephen Carpenter the guitarist.
@@avidspider definitely. I think the reviewer didn't realize those tempo changes were really not from Step but in fact Abe. Even though he said the drums were "meh". Abe's drums alone in this song, especially the ending, change the pace of this song.
Deftones are from Sacramento, & coming from the Bay Area & growing up in that music scene, it was a huge melting pot of rap, metal, oldies, electronic, trip hop was big, Tricky was big...they were all skaters, stoners, baggy Dickies...they had major swag & flavor
Deftones has always done what they want to do. Their vibe is extremely unique. Each person plays however they want to play, and they put it together. And I like it. Instead of deciding on what sound they wanted to make, they decided to each play their own way and smash it together. As you got through Deftones growth, they try everything out. They have given themselves no rules on what sound they will make, and it is amazing.
I completely felt it when JB said the disconnect with today's music and wishing you got exposed to this music at an earlier age, I'm 37 and only been listening to rock for a decade. But it's definitely overtaken any other genre, especially Tool for me... deftones-Hole in the Earth features more of the cool raging especially with drums. Phantom Bride, Digital bath, and Beauty School are good listens too.
I am 42, loved Deftones since early 90s. Sometimes i go years without listening to much of their stuff, then i listen and i am blown away all over again. Like Bach, Mozart or Tool.....it is fundamentally different from the background. Great review!
Rodleen Getsic was the woman doing the screaming and my mom works with her husband, she had been doing recording studio work for a film she was in at the time I think, and they heard her and asked for her to be on the song
Love this song and love your reaction, I'm telling you... Deftones' White Pony album is one of the best albums ever. Fun fact: the woman who sang vocals during the bridge is Rodleen Getsic and the story goes that she was just randomly at the studio when this was getting recorded and she just walked in and dropped that vocal performance for this song. No planning or anything, it just magically happened! You should definitely check out the Deftones' cover of Sade's "No Ordinary Love".
Deftones first three albums was my youth and I built a big part of my identity upon those records. Fabulous stuff to reflect my emotional self still. A big part of me feels things like this.
The swing, the chords, the vocals, the bass… it’s jazzy it’s groovy and it’s metal asf. Some of the best music I’ve ever heard and I’m discovering them at 22 😡
Deftones is truly in a league of their own when it comes to style. I can’t compare them to anyone and I love how bold it was of them to just burst forth in their own lane and just do their shit. And for them to STILL be putting out completely awesome albums, through the decades, through gettin older, through losing Chi, etc. They’re just singularly Deftones.
Did you know that deftones is one of the sound track used in Dave Mirra bmx freestyle game in ps1, and it is the be quite and drive track and it is perfect.
I remember being 16 living in a small rural town in country Australia and travelling to the city so I could get my hands on this album. 3 hours on a train. I’m 34 now and still love this album. It’s just pure gold.
You guys should check out Deftones Passenger. Maynard James Kennan from Tool is on there. You need to listen to his other bands, A Perfect Circle and Pusifer. Tool and Deftones both were 2 huge influential bands and lots of bands give them credit. 2 other bands Jane's Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers are also hugely influential.
Deftones has been a part of every Era of my life. Being the weird 10yr old who listened to Deftones and Korn instead of nysync, taking mdma and sitting in the dark listening to them while trying to deal with my bipolar disorder, and now it's my background to my daily life.
Always considered them the hippest of all metal bands. Probably the best introduction to the genre there is to someone from an R&B background. Enjoying your guys journey into aggressive heavy music.
You guys are amazing and so much fun to listen to. Deep musically, but also love the Spiderman and Tony Hawk mentions! Keep reacting and Happy Holidays!!
Hit like before I watched since it was Deftones! Lol @ sex metal, that’s perfect! Yes you did miss a lot of music, but the best part is you get to experience it now, with us. Another great reaction! I say you throw down a few Korn songs to pay homage. Make Me Bad is a good one. And MORE DEFTONES! Watching from Tampa, Florida. Happy Saturday!
Growth never stops, bro. Just cause ya didn't get it young, don't mean you can't get it and take inspiration now. You get it now. You learned, you grew. Honestly, I was the same way with Rap for the longest - I didn't get the appeal. THEN I heard Bone Thug, THEN I heard Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot - I feel I hit the crescendo with Old Dirty Bastard when it comes to creativity. See, before them, it was people reading poetry to a beat, and I felt literally anyone could do that... But these guys, the masters, they don't just run /with/ the beat, it feels like they're manipulating the beat with their lyrics, while showing an understanding of music artistry. There's nothing wrong with ignorance - we've all been ignorant to something - as long as we grow. So... grow, and free yourself to life's pleasures. Give all those iffy things a chance.
I realy like this dude. He's so refreshing, with a great attitude, same as his bro. I don't even do reaction videos but to be honest, both of these boys know metal... they are very well educated on metal. Love these guys. I just subbed also
Lmao I fuck with you guys. I can connect with both yall and see where you're coming from with the things you say. Deftones are a time machine to me. When I hear any song from White Pony, it takes me back to 7th grade INSTANTLY. They're unlike any other band
Fun Fact: there's a band named after this song that does pretty awesome techno. Great to see you guys continue on the journey through Deftones. Keep going.
@@tendarkshadows Yeah! Knife Party was actually a side project of some of the guys from Pendulum, and after Pendulum split, Knife Party became their main priority.
Quick story...I was at a festival watching the Main stage acts at an amphitheater off to the side.... and the Deftones (very early in their career) were playing on one of the side stage grass areas by all the food and beer vendors ...and their bass player was shaking the seats in the main amphitheater ....pretty awesome
One thing I've always appreciated about Deftones composition style is that they allow space in their songs. Most bands around this time filled every gap with something, a riff a bend, an 808 drop, just something to fill the space. But Deftones allowed the song to breathe and it's that emptiness that heightens their music.
One thing I've loved for the longest time is introducing people to these songs and seeing their reaction to them (usually end of a night after drinks and some smoke). Until recently they didn't get much air Play (still don't really) but if people even knew who they were, it was only a song or two and they had no idea about the music that these guys have out or were capable of. Their music gets better the nore you listen to it, there's so much going on there's always something new to pick up on. Been enjoying seeing you discover these guys.
I find myself saying "I love the drums" then I'm like... "I love the Guitar" then I'm like I love Chino's vocals... Then I'm like, "no the bass is the glue"... I've been doing that for 27 years. Fuck it... They're perfect and have been since the start. Always in motion, always evolving but always unmistakable.
i absolutely love how much you guys absolutely love the deftones. onea side note, in regards to their "riffiness": you've started off after they developed what some like to call their "sextones" sound. Their first two albums "adrenaline" and "around the fur" are significantly more riff heavy and definitely worth diving into - if not only to see where they started and better appreciate what they became
I'm biased because Deftones are one of my all time favourite bands - but I can't wait for you guys to listen to more of their stuff - they never disappoint and have some really cool shifts in style here and there =)
I feel rhe exact same way about r&b/hip hop these days, ive always loved deftones/system of a down/etc but lately ive connected with that kind of music so much more. they always keep it exciting and fresh
I've been listening to the Deftones since 1996 kids and I listen to them more now. You don't have a lot of Nu metal without their influence. They literally started rock rap while skating a half pipe. I've seen them live seven times and I never left a show unhappy. I'm a hard-core fan that knows every song inside and out. I have to say you guys nailed on the reaction. Thx it's super entertaining
I'm surprised you didn't bring up Abe Cunningham's ghost notes. Ghost notes are an anomaly in rock and Abe is one of a small handful that use them and use them tastefully. Chi's bass brings a fluidity to the busy drumming of Abe and locks it all down in a gracefully structured song. I was blessed to see the Deftones five times during their run promoting White Pony (one of them was capped at 200 people because it was the first night in a small run of club shows they did) and "Knife Prty" is easily my favourite track of theirs.
03:56 » what a funny coincidence you say that and their beautiful cd cover (2003) shows what you mean with that skull over the roses (I think you've already heard 'Minerva' which is my favorite from that album).
The truly Primal elements of life and survival in a song. I knew you would love this one. The aggressive knife fight as every person are each impaled into submission ... and start fighting for their lives. $#it comes @ U fast.
So happy to see you guys listen to this! Knife prty is one of my absolute favorite Deftones songs. It never fails to give me goosebumps. Edit: Also, Beware is an under appreciated song of theirs that has a similarly eerie sensuality to it that I think you’d like!
You're 100% correct, deftones are sex metal. I don't even know what to write watching you react to my favourite songs of my favourite artists.....it's like watching/hearing it for the first time! I'm also a massive Incubus fan and Korn. But Deftones have something else. It's just different. I don't know why. It's just it's own genre.
I really enjoy your reaction videos, there's something different about them. Not only the fact that you know what you're talking about, but your angle too. Refreshing and interesting. Please review more Deftones or any other good music ! Greetings from France.
I like to call is “smooth” metal. The band has that aggression, but Chino “swoons” with his lyrics. More please…..check out Rosemary or anything off their new album is AMAZING
I still go and see Korn live but yeah, I don't have the same love for their newer music. I try but I just can't. I'll return to their albums and see if with fresh ears I can enjoy it more and maybe fall in love with more songs. But their work even up until Korn III was amazing. They lost a couple members along the way and experimented but man did it create some truly fresh music they never went back to. Or barely. Like with a song or 2. After hearing their last few albums, I actually appreciate See You On The Other Side and Untitled a lot more.
Unique sound with masterful musicians. No guitar solo's. Amazing lyrics and Chino's voice. Just a brilliant band who have only gotten better. I agree that You've Seen the Butcher would be a good pick if you like this vibe.
Chino Moreno definitely has some sexual undertones in his music... you should check out his different side projects. I think you would appreciate Team Sleep: Fromant Blvd Knights More Synth beats Crosses: The Epilogue Frontiers Thank u guys ✌
I would guess that that bass sound you're hearing could (and actually might) be done with a pedal. One of the guitarists in my band has a pedal that does a similar effect. Also, on a side note. Deftones is generally considered to be in the Post-Metal and Shoegaze genres. They did some Nu-Metal stuff back in the day, but now are pretty much Post-Metal/Shoegaze. Which pretty much just means that they do the metal thing, mixed with ambient and atmospheric guitars/tones/sections. I'd say probably every spacey prog band now is influenced by Deftones to some degree.
Knife Prty is truly one of my faves! Rosemary, Entombed, be Quiet and Drive, Passenger, Phantom Bride, the Spell of Mathematics… the list goes on. Deftones is GOATed
Best band ever imo
The Boys Republic
Phantom Bride feat. Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains!

I loved deftones as a kid but never appreciated they’re complexity until my musical taste matured. Defiantly ahead of they’re time…

I think you would appreciate
Team Sleep: Fromant
Blvd Knights
More Synth beats
Crosses: The Epilogue
Frontiers
Thank u guys ✌

As a drummer you’ll want to check out thrir track “you’ve seen the butcher” - craziest, catchiest drum led track next to “digital bath”
Deftones is music for the connoisseur.
Passenger is a must. Maynard from tool and deftones together. Absolutely the best collaboration ever.
We'll get to it I'm sure
@@marylandstationmusic9422 No. Rush. It's if Maynard sang for deftones. Chino and Maynard sing well together. Very angelic and melodic.
