Im not a trombone player, but my father is. The sounds of the horn is beautiful. I just bought my father this mouthpiece and hope it makes his playing that much better. He is a fantastic player, he has been paying over 45 years. Thks for the review
I used to play on a 3AL heritage series, when I was playing bass bone in a big band and 1st in symphony. You are spot on with the loss of clarity; personally I think the cause is the abnormally large distance between the inner and outer rim diameters. You can really hear the muddy-ness around 2:10, and that's not knocking your playing at all lol. You consistently sound clearer in similar runs in most other videos.
Thanks for the feedback; to me it just feels like it takes more time to get every note to respond which has a large impact on flexibility and articulation. With this being the 5BL in theory the response should be a bit quicker then the AL with a deeper cup; it would be interesting to compare the AL and BL side by side...
Nice video! It's big the difference between the Edwards T 396 A and the Bach Centennial model? The Alessi model is very expensive but it is worth it? What of those do you prefer?
In these reviews, it would be very helpful to understand where you’re coming from. To wit: what is your standard mouthpiece horn combo, and its tonal center vs the reviewed setup.
A good point! Part of the issue is that my horn and mouthpiece choices have varied some over even the past few years; however, when I am getting the appropriate practice time in I tend to prefer more of a Bach-type of instrument feel and I typically use a 5G rim size (in different mpc configurations). Let me know if this is helpful or if I can include other information as well...
I played on a Heritage 4BS for three years on a King 608F and recently bought a Shires TB-QAlessi Model and was given a Bach 4G mouthpiece because I didn’t like the shires mouthpiece that came with the horn... I’m thinking of getting a Heritage 4ABL, what’s the difference between the 4BS and the 4ABL heritage mouthpiece? Is it just the throat size and the diameter of the shank or are the cups different sizes?
The 5BS and 5BL have the same interior specs. The 5BS could be used on small bore and large bore with an adapter. Good high register, due to the 6.87 mm bore and medium back bore.
We went to a music shop to ask for a new mouthpiece for my son's euphonium, and the one mouthpiece that he sounded better and he looked most relaxed playing was a 5BL. Now, I can see that it is a trombone mouthpiece more than anything. We haven't bought it yet, but wondering if you could help us to understand that is okay or not to play an euphonium with a trombone mouthpiece. Thank you.
Thank you. It doesn't fit in the euphonium as good as it should but it sounded good. The euphonium is 100 years old though. We haven't bought the mouthpiece yet.

I’m a bass trombonist and i have finally found a review on this mouthpiece by a actually skilled trombonist that wasn’t just taught a few etudes and then asked to perform them Great review but I’ll stick with my Greg Elliot 1g mouthpiece as i like the more centered sound i get with it. (My friend plays on the 5bl and has nothing but good to say about it) Ps. You sounded excellent on Schumann 3 (or 2 I can’t remember exactly)
I am a new trombonist and would like to know the difference between all the heritage mouthpieces because there are a lot of them I’m not sure what to get
Do you like the classical 5BL better? My band director told me it consider buying that one. Right now I have a 4AL but stopped playing bass trombone and need high range
The size very much depends on the individual (and what instrument they are playing on.) In general I tend to lean towards the 5 (25.5mm) as a go-to for large bore tenor. The trombonist who is playing 3-6 hours a day may have the breath support and embouchure strength to make a 4 or even larger work for them on tenor (or they may just have a larger face and lip structure where they need more room) but in general I think the 5 gives a bit truer tenor sound and easier access to the upper register. Again though, it is very player-specific! Best recommendation, try them out and see!
It was from the Telemann Unaccompanied Fantasie in C minor; this is part of a set of 12 that were originally written for flute and transcribed for Carl Fischer by Alan Raph. I enjoy working on them as they are more technically challenging in their way then the Bach cello suites; the depth of the music isn't the same (I will always default to the Bach suites for beauty and complexity) but they're great exercises and work well for when I present clinics, masterclasses, etc. The edition I was playing was shop.schmittmusic.com/brass/trombone-low-brass/sheet-music/twelve-fantasies-georg-philipp-telemann/...
I have been trying to use my Denis Wick Heritage 5ABL with my 88HO-Y for years now but my Conn 5G has been more accurate and clear. I agree with this review as the only thing the DW does better for me is long loud notes, if I can nail it at the start. I think I may need to stop trying to make this Mouthpiece work for me.
Thanks for the feedback! I never fully trust my own judgement and so it is always reassuring to me when I hear from others that they have the same experience. I actually like the Conn 5G quite a bit; I find it to match up nicely with my 88HO and it is responsive and flexible. However, I find it's timbre to be a bit light for my needs and so I typically play a Bach 5G which seems to give a bit more core but still have mobility...
I tried the heritage on my King 5b. I loved the mouthpiece but it goes too far into the lead pipe and I can't get the horn in tune. I had to send it back.
The Old large bore kings do not have a standard size leadpipe it is somewhere between remmington and morse tapers....Doug Elliott does a King shank in his range of 3 piece mouthpieces
Not particularly, it is somewhat middle of the road, a good compromise though. A mouthpiece with a wider rim and deeper cup such as the Wick 4AL or Bach 4G will give a larger sound, especially in the medium and lower register provided you're in reasonable playing shape (i.e. in practice).
You are a terrific player whom I've heard now on several videos. I'd have to say you are spot on in that the articulation, particularly the Telemann, seemed sluggish, even airy. Much better with the sostenuto style of the Wagner.
This particular mouthpiece is a large shank, whereas most student trombones as small shank; however, Denis Wick does offer a this in a 5BS small shank...
The Denis Wicks tend to be a bit on the thin side for me in general (and I know this is a personal thing; many players use them and sound wonderful!) The Heavytop versions tend to add a bit of mass to the sound for me that I find helpful though...
Unfortunately, as you mentioned, it looks like DW is only offering the Heritage trombone pieces in the full gold plate, and we do not have an ETA if they will be bringing back the gold plated rim option, if ever…
You sound terrific on that (mouth) piece. I really like the tone of that horn too.

If your trombone takes a large shank mouthpiece, absolutely! Otherwise they do make this mouthpiece in a small shank as well (5BS)…
