    Polish metal outfit Behemoth releases one of its best albums in years with the Satanist. It's powerful, immense, and twisted. Oh, and sorta catchy, too.
    What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

    Hearing good words about Behemoth is a little bit funny for me. Here, in Poland they are all about controversy, no one even thinks about what they are playing. The guitarist of this band is well known for dating the pop star that made the most shitty music in polish history. However, after this review i listened to The Satanist and i really enjoyed it, it's really well written and surprisingly ambitious. I'm very confused right now.

      @Mistweaver Yeah, he's very well known in Poland and also very controversial - for a lot of catholic people here (Poland is a VERY catholic country), especialy elderly/adults he's basically a heretic and sacreligist. He openly and vigorously critocizes religion, he tore a Bible during one of the concerts and has that demonic image in music so yeah. Mix that with catholic population and there you go xD

    • @pinkraven4402
      @pinkraven4402 3 года назад

      @Mistweaver But it's actually funny that I that musicians that are famous in Poland aren't famous worldwide and vice versa. People don't talk much in PL about Behemoth or Riverside - Myslovitz is a much more popular band here and noone outside Poland knows them. I recommend their LP "Korova Milky Bar" by the way. One of my favourite albums ever, magnificent alt rock 🤟

    • @pinkraven4402
      @pinkraven4402 3 года назад +2

      And yeah, Nergal is basically that controversial figure who's more famous because of that instead of being famous for his music

      Ericsson Johnsonson If i can give you any advice, listen to Dream Theater, Opeth, Mastodon, Death, Machine Head, Overkill, Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree, Darkthrone and Testament. Don't listen to the Metal community, they are mostly elitsts. And always keep searching and revisting bands, you may not like Darkthrone at first, but once you can bear the Black Metal screams, you'll love it.

      If I may provide some bands that are awesome in metal/extreme music (I'm only listing the genres as a way to find similar artists)...
      All Pigs Must Die (Crust Punk)
      Autopsy (Old School Death Metal)
      Behemoth (Black Metal/Blackened Death Metal)
      Burzum (Ambient/Atmospheric Black Metal)
      Candlemass (Epic Doom Metal)
      Cannibal Corpse (Old School Death Metal) (I do not recommend starting with their earlier stuff, it's much less interesting than Torture or Kill)
      Darkthrone (Traditional Black Metal)
      Death (Old School/Technical Death Metal) (Start here for death metal)
      Edge Of Sanity (Progressive Death Metal)
      Gojira (Progressive Death Metal)
      Gorgoroth (Traditional Black Metal)
      Gorguts (Technical Death Metal) (Do not let Obscura be your first impression, they write difficult music but none of their stuff reaches THAT level of insanity anymore)
      High On Fire (Stoner Sludge Metal)
      Kreator (Thrash Metal)
      Maeth (Progressive Metal)
      Mastodon (Progressive Sludge Metal) (START HERE NO MATTER WHAT)
      Meshuggah (Experimental Metal)
      Metallica (Thrash Metal) (Only Kill 'Em All to ...And Justice For All)
      Obituary (Old School Death Metal)
      Pantera (Groove Metal)
      Slayer (Thrash Metal)
      Suffocation (Brutal Death Metal)
      This Routine Is Hell (Hardcore/Sludge Punk)
      Toxic Holocaust (Blackened Thrash Metal)
      Ulcerate (Technical Death Metal)
      Vital Remains (Melodic/Brutal Death Metal)
      1349 (Traditional Black Metal/Dark Ambient)

    This album is incredible to me. There is a crushing sense of strength and confidence in Behemoth's music that initially drew me to them and led them to become one of my favorite bands. And after these past years waiting to see what they would come up with next, I kept hoping they would do something a bit more ambitious, expanding on their sound while staying true to their primary roots in black metal. They did a phenomenal job on this record. I'm gonna see them in April in NYC with 1349 and Goatwhore, and I can't wait. :)

    Fuckin amazing album. It's an artistic death/black metal masterpiece. Loved all of the added little stabs of horns and strings woven throughout all of the ferocity and controlled chaos within the entirety of this album. There's no denying the greatness of the two previous albums though. Demigod and Evangelion were blackened death masterpieces in my opinion. Riffs made for conquering civilizations!

Not a bad thing, and the bass has never been the front of black metal but its always kept a great mood and tone and it does that well here as well.

    I caught them live in philly this spring. They played this album from start to finish. It was the most epic metal performance I've seen. Seth spit blood on me. It was brutal. And when Seth played the solo for Messe Noir, he just stood there, no movement, blank expression, but he sent his soul flying around the room. You could just feel the most intense vibe ever. It was truly an intimate moment for me, as a metal guitarist. We always want to see them running around, head banging, and swinging the guitars around. But seeing him, just standing there, propelling such raw emotion, changed my out look. Hail Behemoth!

    I strongly disagree with the argument towards a lack of notable bass on this album. There are many memorable bass moments where the bass is allowed to shine to great effect such as in Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer; Amen; The Satanist; etc.. It makes a solid appearance here and is heard distinctly throughout.

    We will have to disagree with the bass being "a little obscure." I've never heard so much clarity from the bass on Behemoth records until The Satanist- chunky, groovy, and powerful. IMO, Orion's bass is among the most outstanding things about this record.

    Been listening to this album a great deal, and although you stretched pretty far with how you took the lyrics (compared to what they are actually going for - stated in the booklet of the hardcopy) I feel you grasped things pretty well and I can agree with a lot of it. I love this album, even though I do not enjoy the mix as much as that in Evangelion.
    However, I would like to ask what part of this album characterized it as blackened DEATH metal to you, Anothony, rather than black metal? Where are you still hearing the death metal influences?

    • @TrollTipping
      @TrollTipping 10 лет назад +45

      Some of it is sort of an acquired taste. I used to not like death metal very much, but after a while I listened again and realised that in fact, I did. Same thing with black metal after that. I suggest starting out with NWOBHM bands like Iron Maiden and working your way up. Also, good on you!

    • @jdb352
      @jdb352 10 лет назад +18

      Do you play any instruments? I think Death Metal is tricky to get into if you don't have a good appreciation/understanding of the technical musicianship. I found the screaming a little a bit overbearing initially but once you start focusing on the drums/guitar then the screaming grows on you.
      I'd recommend listening to the album "Nocturnal" by The Black Dahlia Murder as a good inroad to death metal ... has a really good range of vocals that are actually really catchy plus the musicianship is awesome and not just noise.
      I personally listen to death metal mainly for the drums. as a drummer myself...you can't beat something like Behemoth for pure balls-to-the-wall insane drumming.

    • @000sicair
      @000sicair 10 лет назад +1

      Lamb of God is a great entry point, and there are a lot of newer bands these days that are utilizing both singing and screaming. Look into Periphery, Twelve Foot Ninja, and Nevermore (they all sing a lot), and then have fun with the related videos on RUclips.
      Edit: I am well aware that Nevermore is not a new band. Sorry to have implied that.

    • @jdb352
      @jdb352 10 лет назад

      Yup, Lamb of God is good shout. So is Trivium actually. Their second album, Ascendancy, is very heavy and is pretty much all screaming/double bass yet remains catchy. That definitely got me on to heavier stuff.

No matter how great the instrumentation, the lyrics praising or showing Satan in a positive light just...disturb me at a fundamental level. I certainly don't condemn anyone that likes this stuff. People can like and listen to whatever music they please. I guess it just saddens me that, without these lyrics, I might actually enjoy this album.

      how about some traditional black metal, like early Bathory,Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Emperor, Marduk etc etck? new black metal isn't as raw and powerful as the old one.

      Manectric7 But we are talking about the new releases here, such old and classic albums dont need to be spoken about anymore, it would be cliche and meaningless to continue to rant them, as we all already know pretty much all about them. Of course they deserve a reference here and there but they dont need ranks or reviews anymore. Know what I mean? Plus, there are extremely good acts today, search for a guy named Matt Bass, he does Metal reviews of old and new Black and Death metal records, demos, etc. Maybe you know him, but in case you dont here's my hint to you where you may find what you are looking for. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the new Sunn O)))/ Ulver record.
    Great review on this record though. Glad to hear such a positive take on it. I know a lot of Behemoth fans are not really happy with the direction on this record, especially coming after the last record, which everyone I know loved so much, as did I. That said though, I really dig the new record, and the new direction. Keep it up though Anthony. Long time fan of your reviews. I love that you still do such a diverse and interesting spread of music, and always seem to come at everything as a true music fan, while staying objective.
    Also, interesting you mentioned Emperor. I got the feeling the the new direction, and experimentation on this record might have been inspired by Ihsahn. Hope all is well. Cheers.

      I disagree. This album shows a big change for them, they expanded their sound quite a bit from all their previous efforts. It's an excellent album from beginning to end. You can tell they put a hell of a lot of effort into the composition and production in order to make the best damn album they possibly could. And good lord, does it pack a punch. I think a light 9 is an absolutely deserved rating for this album's accomplishment.

      I found it to be a challenge to sit through their previous albums, but this one just has a better flow throughout and doesn't sound so, for lack of a better word, sterile. And there is a definite attention toward catchiness and song writing; and bad ass solos.
