Yes, I heard that too - I wonder if it's more a case if the software that listens to the transcript and then types up what was being communicated got it as inaudible. Cos generally its not a human doing that anymore.

You have to give kudos to Kennedy ATC personnel, two emergencies at once in one of the busiest airports on the globe, and I've see people working at donuts joints getting more nervous than these folks.
They have to be calm while giving instructions to the pilot because they know what kind of pressure the pilot is under. Their voice shouldn't bring out any tension they are under. This is the reason they are paid so high. Handling such pressure takes a toll on their body - psychologically and physically. Many ATC officials face too much anxiety and stress. Many of them take pills to keep their nerves calm.

Strange that everybody complains the about the Russian accent. For example, for me as a German native speaker Russians speaking English with thick accent are mostly pretty easy to understand. Funny, isn't it? :)
Same here. Like I know a guy who barely even has a Russian accent and I can understand him perfectly. But the native English speakers I know insist he has a "thick accent" and that he is difficult to understand. I think people who have English as a native language get used to being able to understand words without thinking about it. So they don't know how to handle something that sounds a bit different because they never had to consciously learn the language.
Once I got my ear "trained" to listen to him, he wasn't all that hard to understand. I speak three languages, though, although not well enough to not have to "translate" in my head as I go along, but I think once you've trained your mind how to switch back and forth, it's easier to hear in another accent, if you know what I mean.
Native spanish speaker (Latin american, unlike VAS Himself, who is spanish) and I can undertand those guys perfectly
I am a Russian native speaker and German accent is the most understandable for.But I have to strain to understand americans.
I can get used to an accent, it's the lack of comprehension that bothers me.
If the pilot doesn't understand "age" on the 10th attempt, ATC could just rephrase with "how old is she?"

He was just trying to give context to the age (saying just "38" would've been ambiguous as they have long since switched topics), and judging by the effort he put to speak that word, and the previous communications where he couldn't understand what the ATC was asking, it may have had to do with mental overload under stress. Unlike English, in Russian the words for gender have the same root as the words for man and woman. Мужчина, женщина (man, woman) and мужской, женский (male, female), and we don't use genders to address or describe persons, we always use words for man and woman. I.e. he might as well just have said "woman" (as that is literally what you would say in Russian), but could've stumbled on the fact the ATC repeatedly used the word "female", which might've given some pause on what word to say. Hypothetically. In a normal conversation that wouldn't have been a problem, I think. Or if he just spoke that sentence fluently without pause.

My mom had me 5 days after landing at JFK from Athens Greece in 1987. She lied and said she was only 5 months pregnant and not flying on her due date. Ohhhh the 1980s.

You are not allowed to fly after you are a certain no. of weeks pregnant, so either this lady was in very dire circumstances (premature birth) or lied about how far gone she was. Anyone know how this ended?

*sigh, but, what are you going to do at the time? You can get all hot under the collar that the pilot is not understanding you, or you can try something different. Only an idiot will try the same thing three times and expect a different result the third time.
Its a strange choice of phrase, unlikely to be understood by someone whose first language is not English, When did you last someone for "the age of the female"? The usual phrase is "how old is she?" Give the guy a break, he is doing an excellent job handling a medical emergency in his second language! Could you do that?
I was on a tower crane once and although the guys spoke the same language natively, due to noise and interference they often had to repeat the same command. But you could never hear the same phrase twice, they always used different words. Human brain is quite capable of understanding mumbled speech when you use enough synonyms.
The whole planet does not speak only english.

American controllers need to understand this guys English is really limited if it's outside of aviation related conversation, trying asking the age for 3 times and not getting respond, you should start asking "How old is the woman"
+Garik skyhawk If you put your ass in the front seat of an airliner that flies outside your home soil, you better be able to speak proper English and don't just regurgitate phrases like "Aeroflot xxx, passing FLYYY, with information A". Although I don't want to pick on the crew, this was a shitty situation, and there was probably mayhem in the cabin.
+Courier6 I totally agree with you, they're required to pass level 4 English in Russia but I don't know how much is level 4.
I speak Russian and I talk to this guys sometimes here in LAX even have some friends and hangout with them when they're in LA , they can't keep basic conversation outside airport, but Transaero Pilots, another Russian airline had higher standards and those guys had much better English. Aeroflot is the worst English speaking airlines a think, even Asian pilot's speak better English )))

I heard Aeroflot pilots who spoke English quite well - still strong accent, but fluently and well to understand, so, don't know if Aeroflot really is the worst :) I just can't get it why one wouldn't put a bit effort into learning the language (in this case English) at least to a level that allows me to communicate well in a situation like this - and the vocabulary used here was really not complicated. I acknowledge that for Russians learning English might be harder than for us Germans, but again, this can be asked from someone who wants to play with a stick while hurdling through the skies at almost the speed of sound. But this problem is omnipresent in the world, here in Europe - so I hear at least - Spain and Italy's ATC speak English horribly. Although, what really bugs me, is, that there is no only IFR language. So if you don't speak Arabic (and who wants to learn that) you are not able to monitor all radio traffic at DXB which any IFR pilot should do. I think that should be fixed in the future. One universal language, and no special treatment for certain countries. Although with countries like China unlikely to be very cooperative, this will remain my wet fantasy for some time, I guess.
It isn’t about “he’s Russian and doesn’t speak English” captains and copilots aren’t given information regarding the passengers like that. Heck, most of the time they don’t know how many are on board until their is an emergency. They have to ask a flight attendant and they have to go back and ask the passenger or reference a sheet of paper.
I have often heard this with the US controllers. It's as if they don't understand anything that is not pure American English. I'm from Sweden and has no issues with understanding the pilot here.

@@inastormydaze2044 there's a lot of training that goes into the job as well. It's also a very demanding job for someone's brain, that's why the FAA requires that all air traffic controllers retire at age 56. It's a very difficult job. Usually the highest pay is in the most congested airspace.

Some VERY lucky Cubans on that plane may not want to leave with the plane.
I don't know, how other airlines deal with it, but all airlines I've ever flown with, would never allow highly pregnant person to fly wit them - by the way, including Aeroflot!
If her doctor okayed it, it's all right. Besides. some babies insist on coming early, or whenever they please! Go figure.
Its up to the airline if they want to take the risk
The risk start with 7 months as that is the start of the highest risk for premature birth. Past that point you do need doctors permission to fly. But just because you have permission to fly does not mean you will not go in to la or early. The babies come whenever they decide to come. Most developed airlines give their flight attendents training on how to deal with this and similar situation.
I can never be in the control tower. I'll panic. I can't multitask to this extent... xD I salute to them!!!

Since I am a mother I would like to know did she have a girl or boy? I also thought that you couldn't fly if you were over 7 months. Did that change? I was told it is dangerous.

There seems to be confusion about the nationality of the baby, if it is born whilst in flight. In this case, the baby would be American, because they were in US airspace at the time. However, if the plane had been in the airspace of a country that does not confer birthright citizenship (Australia, England, Spain and others) then the baby is the nationality of the parents.
Does the baby have dual nationality then, American and Russian?
@@Nurichiri Quite possibly. If the parents are Russian, then yes, I believe it would be possible for the baby to have dual citizenship.
Idea: Baby is born on aircraft registered in Russia, therefore baby is Russian
I believe some other comment pointed out that if the baby is born on board, they would get the aircraft's citizenship (Russian?), if birth right applies. By the same token, if the baby is born after landing, they would probably get American citizenship instead.
Also, the flight is from Havana to Moscow, which means it's also possible that the parents are Cuban, which might also confer that citizenship as well.
So, they would be either only Russian (if parents are Russian + baby was born on board) or any 2 out of Russian/American/Cuban, depending on place of birth and parents citizenship, as well as each country's citizenship laws.

What if the aircraft is registered in Bermuda? All Aeroflot Boeing and Airbus products are.

Jirka Čumpelík VQ-BXX registry? That was assigned to Barbados when it was still a UK colony but since 1968 Barbados used 8P-XXX. When Bermuda ran out of VP-BXX registrations they were given VQ-BXX to supplement. Bermuda is still a British Colony (or “British Overseas Territory” as is now the terminology). The VP- and VQ- registrations are all used by British Overseas Territories including Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, The Falklands and Saint Helena.

Interesting, this is why flying during your last trimester is a very bad idea. Much is being lost in translation, the pilot's English is limited to aviation terms. At first I thought he might be ignoring the age question,base in "What does that have to do with anything", later it seems more likely he did not understand. Nice job thanks for posting it
well, the think about asking the age is very important in order to provide more accurate information to the medical team standing by on the ground, I'm not a doctor but I can assume it's not the same when giving birth being 20 years old or like in the situation above mentioned almost 40 years old, it's just to enhance the situation awareness by the crew and by the ATC and do as always the best as possible
