Sinking of the Austrian Battleship SMS Szent István 1918 WWI film

  • This film shows the capsize of the SMS Szent István in 1918. The Austro-Hungarian battleship had been intercepted by two Italian MAS boats and subsequently sank. Most of the ships crew managed to escape due to the Austrian navy's mandate that all of its sailors be taught to swim, which was actually a bit unusual for navies of that era. The film itself was taken by Austrian naval personnel from the SMS Tegetthoff which was nearby.

    Also my great-grandpa served on this ship as AA gunner. I had goosebumps when I saw this video for the first time. Fortunately, he knew how to swim and survived. Grandpa had his insignia, papers ordering him to join the Austro-Hungarian army and a photo being on the deck with the rest of AA crew, unfortunately all got lost when grandpa died. What a pity.

    My Great Grandfather was on this boat. When it was sinking he jumped. We still have original picture of the boat in living room. Sorry for my English. Im from czech republic. My Great Grandfather was from Austria Hungury and he lived in Czechoslovakia to his dead.

      Hi! My Grandfather's brother was on the boat too. Survived, but committed suicide in mid 1920s. Greetings from Hungary!

      My great grandfather was on this ship as well. He was at the stern when they tried to balance the ship and then they jumped but only after they got the order from the captain!
      We also have a big photo of a sinking ship in a living room in our family house.
      10th June 2018 marks 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship!

      My great-great-uncle (I think that's the right number of greats) was involved in it's designing and actually told the navy that the guns they wanted were to big for the ship and that it would capsize because they'd make it top heavy.

      I would have jumped and swam too. If the skipper wanted to go down with his ship, then that would be his choice. I hope all of the crew got topside when it became obvious the vessel was going to capsize.
      For all their great bulk and armoured protection (or possibly because of it), battleships quickly became unstable death-traps after a few torpedo hits in critical parts of their hulls.

    The torpedo boat which sank her (MAS 15) today is preserved at the Sacrario delle bandire (shrine of the flags) which is inside the Vittorialle in Rome and has been perfectly preserved and is free to see by the public.

      We should be grateful that we didn't go through what our previous generations had to go through! I'm sure most young men today wouldn't join in!

    My great grandfather who was at the time 27 years old served on this ship as a stoker (rank: first class sailor) when the torpedo stuck the target. Later the crew assembled on the deck to use their weight as a counterbalance, however, this didn't help much, they even turned the cannons. He saved himself by swimming to another ship. The sailors who jumped before the order was given, were shot in the sea from Szent István and the nearby ships. After the disaster my great grandfather was latter transfered to SMS Viribus Unitis where few months latter he experienced similar destiny in Pula/Pola. He died as old man in 1970.

      Dear Matej, there are several eyewitness records from the sinking of the SMS Szent István, none of them mentions shooting of survivors. There are also two film reels from 2 different angels, but at no time is the shooting of survivors visible. This claim is contradictory to the rules of the Austro-Hungarian navy (in fact, any WW1 navy), and also common sense. To put it politely, your comment is a piece of fiction!

      @@steffeness1 it was hit by one or max 2 torpedoo shot by Italian powerboat of Decima Flottiglia MAS that was a boat of 20 tons and from 4 to 10 men over Durring WW1 Italian Navy sunk 3 Austrian Battleships the Wien, the Viribus Unitis and the Saint Stephen...

      @@Benito-Musolesi SMS Wien was struck by two torpedoes while was at anchor in Trieste harbor.
      SMS Viribus Unitis was sunk by Italian diversion (with magnetic mine) the DAY AFTER the end of WW1 while was at anchor in Pula harbor. Anchors from SMS Viribus Unitis are today in Roma in front of Ministry of defence

    I read that the loss of life was way lower than expected because a requirement in this Navy is that all seamen know how to swim

      Yep and also the slow sinking of the ship helped, as well as the warmer waters and a fellow ship standing nearby ready to pick up survivors.

    The sinking of this battleship is what led to the requirement in pretty much all navies that battleships must always have destroyer/frigate escorts at all times. The only navy that didn't do this was the Nazi German Kriegsmarine, and that was because they didn't have long-endurance long-range destroyer designs which could be deployed to escort battleships like Bismarck or Graf Spee for ocean spanning merchant fleet convoy raiding. Scharnhorst had destroyer escort, but made the mistake of sending off her escort to scout for the merchant conveys they were hunting, and then she was cornered by Duke of York before they could return.

      Because it wasnt sinking. It was under tow for some two hours when ut was concluded that the pumpa would not be sufficient to keep it afloat until it reached port and efforts to keep it afloat ceased.

    My Great Grandfather and his brother deserted from the Austro-Hungarian Navy in 1912 by jumping off their ship in NY Harbor and swimming to Manhattan. They made a good choice.

      The Austo-Hungarian navy actually suffered relatively few casualties during the war compared with the British and German navies. The Austro-Hungarians decided very early on in the war to keep their fleet largely close to its home ports, so that it would remain a threat in the mediterranian and force the French (and later the Italian) Navy to stay in the Mediterranian Sea to keep a check on it (this strategy is called "Fleet in Being") as such, the bulk of the Austrian navy during the war. All the naval battles fought in the Adiratic involved only light Austrian naval units like destroyers, torpedo boats, and small cruisers.

      Thats wrong, the Italian battleship Dante Alighieri was one year before the Tegetthoff class build and had allso three cannons in each turret.

    Interesting that battleships were still built when it was shown how easy they could be sunk with a torpedo from small boats or even just frogmen - and later plane.

    I read they had maintained the list of the ship between 7-10 degrees. You would think they would have launched the lifeboats "just in case" she sank. They could always recover them later. In my opinion, if there was no reason not to launch the lifeboats except for the Captain's pride, any Sailor not killed from the initial attack was totally the Captain's fault.

      Warships didn’t have lifeboats; there were cutters for going from ship-to-shore but they required a lot of time and effort to launch. In addition, Szent István don’t even have enough electrical power to run her pumps due to the boiler rooms flooding. This meant that they couldn’t have been able to launch the boats if they wanted to as they wouldn’t have been able to power the cranes

    This ship had 12 boilers in 2 boiler rooms, of which both boiler rooms took a torpedo... Ouch.
    If they had followed now pretty much the standard of having no more than 2 boilers to a boiler room, then the increased compartmentalization probably would have saved the ship.
    This ship was doomed on the drawing board, even if it had taken shells instead of torpedos...

      It didnt take a torpedo to the boiler room, the bulkhead doors simply wernt closed in time, and one of them flooded.
      And the ship was plenty compartmentalized. From what I remember from the blueprints it had 16 sealable compartments, plus its torpedo bulges were also filled with air.
      Why it sunk was twofold. It was too small for its armament (153 metersfor a dozen twelve inch 45 caliber guns? making it top heavy, thats why it flipped over, and its torpedo bulge was too small, which lead to flooding in the first place.
      As for it being easyto sink, well one of them was used by france as target practice, and they had to sink it with scuttlig charges because their battleship guns couldnt.

      Compromised design, take a look on what insanity the Lexington's design process at one time had (and again contemplated in the South Dakota's in 1939!): boilers rooms under water AND another set above the armour deck ( warshipprojects.com/2017/03/20/washington-cherry-trees-i-part-2/) just in able to get it all fit in one hull. while the KuK didn't try to build excessively fast ships, they still had to work with coal and -triple-expansion engines- , bringing in all sorts of interesting design challenges to solve. Horrible workmanship didn't help either though.
      Anti-torpedo systems really comes at the expense of usable hull-width, which in turn means you or have to squeeze your propulsion system or make your hull longer at the expense of extra weight for a longer citadel, compromise on hull strength because your heavy armament is put on the outer sides where there is no buoyancy generated AND you have lots of machinery spaces at the places you would like to have extra bulkheads to generate the structural strength where you need it most.

    The troupe on the Tegetthoff was supposed to film the glorious victory over the italo-british forces blocking the Otranto Channel. Ironically, those guys just filmed one of their own sinking ships for the first time in history.

    The landlubbers thought that the attack came from a sub and thus Tegetthoff started zigzagging and attempted the tow only 80minutes later, to no avail, by that time too late. Under that 80 minutes Szent Istvan tried to limp into shallow water, using it`s own propulsion, until the power was cut off due to the engine room flooding.
    Amazing that a formation can cruise with all eyes so shut, that they fail to see a MTB - attack in a broad daylight.

      When the ship was hit, it was not thought to be damaged fatally, and thus it was taken under tow by another battleship which tried to tow it towards port. The vast majority of the crew on the Szent Istvan survived, only 89 of her 1094 died, and some of those during the torpedo attacks on the ship and not in the sinking itself. The high survival rate was in part due to the fact that swimming lessons were a mandatory part of Austro-Hungarian basic training for naval recruits, which surprisingly some other navies at the time did not require.

      First of all the Wien was a ship of the line not a real battleship. The Viribus Unitis and the Szent Istvan were by far not the only battleships sunk in WW1. And why do you comment under every video about the Szent Istvan? You should keep your patriotism in check or should i remind you of the battle of lissa?

      A small boat with torpedoes is actually a challenge for battleships to deal with (the guns can’t fire frequently enough to guarantee a hit).

      Given that the attack happened at night; (shortly before dawn?), it was fairly easy for the two smal boats sneak past the escorts right into the heart of the entire Fleet. + Considering how Torpedos where are fairly new weapon, ant therefore Torpedoprotection was in its Infancy... One could argue that the entire Attack was a big gamble by the Italians and it happened to turn out in their favor.

      @@mathiash.1379 It wasn't a gamble; Miklós Horthy before taking command of the k.u.k. Kriegsmarine, had already attacked 4 times the barrier of the Otranto channel, it was therefore very likely that the new commander intended to give a signal of change in the conduct of the war and that the Otranto channel, well known to him, was part of his plans . For this reason the Italian commander Thaon di Revel had placed submarines lurking in front of Pola, Durres and the Faresina canal. he had also intensified the nocturnal patrols of the Dalmatian coast, (yes, as you wrote, it is easy for small boats to sneak between the stocks of the fleet at night, but it is equally true that large ship formations can go unnoticed with favor of darkness).

      Many survived due to the fact that the Austro-Hungarian Navy taught their sailors how to swim in boot camp, apparently.

    To Fritz Bauer....i dont know German. Anything that can be hoisted on a ship is a boat except submarines by tradition they are always called boat reguardless of nation.

      Well Mr Bauer....subs ate traditionally called boats because in the early 1900s they wrte almost that small. The nickname stuck and subs always are called boats! Ships are different because they are usually larger and usually only navy carrier aircrew call it a boat out of spite. Hope rhat answers you. Didnt mean to insult your fine language i just didnt understand!

      it was this specific ship that didn't, because it was built by the hungarian industry, since all production had to be 66.5% austrian industry and 33.5% hungarian one, the designs had to be changed so the weaker hungarian industry could handle it, and it is impressive that even then it could do so.

      They thought that they could use their weight as a counterbalance after trying to plug the holes with collision mats and trying to pump out the water failed.

      @@fredherbert7920 I know what they were trying to do. All the crew put together probable weight about 70 tons. The ship weighed 20,000+ tons. Even if they all did stand on one side, which they didn't appear to be doing in a disciplined way judging by the amount of milling around going on, they would never be able to budge it. Especially as it was adding more weight as the water entered the hull. They should have just launched the lifeboats and let the ship go.

    Battleship is a ship class, not synonymous for “war ship”
    This is a heavy cruiser, maybe a Battlecruiser for its armament and tonnage.
    However 3x 4 turrets with 12” or so cannons are hardly anything more.
    Its class should had 1k to 1,250 crew, or so… and the officers not ordering Abandon Ship makes them criminals against humanity.
    Even the turrets position was trying to fight the ship capsizing. Ineptitude or evilness equates more or less to the same crime of war.
    Germany was the good nation, if any… and the villains were the Brits and their French puppets.

      Daniel MP Yes, the heavy cruiser Blucher was sunk in Oslo Fjord on 9th April 1940 but the armoured cruiser Blucher was sunk during the battle of the Dogger Bank on 24 January 1916. Hint: they are NOT the same ship!

    The video shows well that battleships were outdated technology. But in WW2 the great powers built battleships again. The Germans also quickly lost their battleships. Only then did they understand that submarines were the right weapon. Lots of wasted human lives.

      The then Austrian Empire and Kingdom of Hungary were united and had coastal territory that included Trieste, Pula, Fiume/RIjeka, and the Dalmatian coast.

    Hungary built 34.4% of the ships, the ship designs were altered to use different components, and even tho these ships proved to be less reliable than the Austrian ones, even due to all of these changes the ships built in Hungary weren't far behind the benchmarks of the Austrian ones. And all Austro-Hungarian navy ships were less up to date than the British and other bigger navies. And yes Croatia was Hungary too since the Croatians choose the Hungarian King as their king in 1102. And neither of these nations had any problems with each other or were oppressed until the Habsburgs arrived and used the divide and conquer politics for hundreds of years and planted the seeds of division and racial hatred that started to flourish (not as vividly as the propaganda depicts it) later on from 1849 and onwards. And despite the friendly and beneficial past Croatia too owns Hungarian territories and indigenous population today that they decided to keep from the Yugoslavian territories.

It was only a part of the sailors who were Austrians there. Some people swam back to save the flags of the ship and an officer to help save his men. They all went down with the ship.       SMS Szent Istvan was a unit of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, one of the Tegetthoff class. She was built in Hungary yes, but Hungary was then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

      Yes it is. In this battleship class were build 4 Pcs. This one by Hungaria. Construction was separate in Rijeka and this ship was the worst piece in this class. Practicaly everything was lower class quality oposite to the rest of class. Only guns were same. From Skoda company. St. Istvan was incredible faulty.

      That ship was sunk in war. The viribus unitis was sanked the last day of the war, but the frogmen didn't know it. They didn't even know it was passed to Yugoslavia by Austria (for avoid to be captured by the allieds. But the allieds didn't care that, and claimed the surviving ships after the peace treaty, that was both sanked in live fire tests after the war I guess one in Italy and one in france.). But the sant istvan was sanked in a war action, at the first mission, trying to break trough the Italian British blockade of otranto channel she was caught by the Italian torpedo boats that sanked it. The Austrian ships fired back too, and a torpedo boat stalked the motor boats for sometime before they dropped some depth charges that forced the escort to turn, letting them escape. Rizzo, the skipper of the motor boat sanked 1 Austrian battleship and a coastal defense battleship, the wien, forcing the Trieste or pola harbors I don't remember, so have respect of a decorated sailor, maybe the most successful motor torpedo boat commander of history. BUT ALSO IF THE FROGMEN HAD NEWS ABOUT THE PASSAGE OF THE V. U. TO YUGOSLAVIA, MAYBE THEY WOULD HAVE SUSPENDED THE ACTION, BUT THE SHIP WAS ANYCASE GIVED TO THE ALLIEDS AS WAR PRIZE. THEY COULDN'T ALLOW THE FORMER ENEMY BATTLE FLEET TO SURVIVE.
