    14) Grand Funk - We're An American Band
One of my favorites by Grand Funk, this is the album that launched the band into worldwide mega-stardom and it still sounds great after all these years.
We're An American Band is actually one of the band's most consistent releases overall, with top-notch production quality (thanks to Todd Rundgren). The album includes some truly excellent songs, and also contains perhaps Mark Farner's greatest vocal performances ever on the outstanding "Creepin'", "The Railroad", "Loneliest Rider", and especially on the rollicking "Black Licorice". Other gems feature fiery lead vocals from Don Brewer, including "Walk Like A Man", and the famous title track, which despite being played to death on just about every radio station known to man, I actually still get a big kick out of hearing, which says a lot about its staying power.
Additionally, the inclusion of keyboardist Craig Frost as an official band member is also welcome, especially when it comes to his Hammond organ excursions, which are quite impressive and seemed to add a new energy to the band.
To me, We're An American Band could be considered Grand Funk's masterpiece (or at least one of them) and (unfortunately) it's also the band's last truly great album.
I haven't done summer without it in half a century, and I have no plans to anytime soon.

This also works in the wintertime. Bitches Brew was the second album I bought from Miles, with Kind of Blue being the first. I was 25 years old, now 52. This is the album that changed my music life. Primed me for instrumental music and epic Prog. So much so, that I literally collect anything influenced by it.
The fact neo con critics like Stanley Crouch despise it so much adds to the mystique.
Bitches Brew is not for short attention spans for sure. It reveals something new each listen. Teo Macero did one of the best cut and paste production jobs of all time on this as well.

My pick for today is The Small Faces - Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake. As a devoted Anglophile I'm a huge fan of English culture. The literature, the music, the mod scene, the humor, Blackadder Monty Python, Fawlty Towers... John Cleese is my favorite comedian, although didn't he called us Belgians, lazy, fat, beer-sodden, pseudo-French bastards, that's quite a compliment, love the accurate description LOL. Together with The Kinks, The Small faces are the quintessential English Rock band. The album kicks of with the instrumental title track, followed by the blissful 'Afterglow'. Other infectious tracks are 'Song Of A Baker' 'Happiness Stan' 'Mad John' and off course 'Lazy Sunday'. I love Steve Marriott´s cockney accent. Awesome album.

Since El Loco in 1981, the bandleader, Billy Gibbons, had been moving ZZ Top's boogie and blues rock style towards the popular new wave style. For Eliminator, he increased the tempo and used more synthesizers and drum machines, producing a "tighter" album with a steady, driving beat.[1] The pre-production engineer Linden Hudson collaborated with Gibbons in Texas on the tempo and songs. The producer Bill Ham and the engineer Terry Manning joined Gibbons in Memphis, Tennessee, to edit the songs, replacing much of the contributions of bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard. Ham claimed the album was solely the work of ZZ Top, but in 1986 Hudson won a lawsuit establishing himself as composer of the song "Thug".
Music videos for "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs" received regular rotation on MTV and helped ZZ Top gain popularity with a younger base. A customized 1933 Ford coupe, depicted on the album cover, appeared in the videos. Following Eliminator's release, ZZ Top embarked on a worldwide concert tour.
The video for "Legs" earned the band the MTV Video Music Award for Best Group. Rolling Stone named Eliminator number 398 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[5] It was listed at number 39 in The 100 Greatest Albums of the 80s, and it was also included in Robert Dimery's book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.[6] A remastered version was released in 2008.
    Track listing
On the album, credits for songwriting were assigned to Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard. Linden Hudson co-wrote several with Gibbons, and wrote "Thug" alone.

Stand Back ! Here Comes Charley Musselwhite’s South Side Band (1967)
This is a classic Chicago Blues album of the highest order. It ranks with Paul Butterfield’s East-West, Junior Wells and Hoodoo Man Blues with Buddy Guy & John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton as the best of the blues influenced rock albums of the 1960’s.
Musselwhite leads the band on Harmonica and his gravelly vocals on a near perfect set list of great blues. The clearness of the performances with many instrumentals and bright playing makes this a fantastic summer album.
Fred Below on drums and Bob Anderson on bass are a solid blues based rhythm section. While Barry Goldberg on organ, piano & keyboards and Harvey Mandel on guitar are rock influenced players. Mandel has been described by Legends of Rock Guitar as using “relentless fuzz tone, feedback-edged solos and unusual syncopated phrasing”. In other words the guitar playing is awesome ! Harvey later played with Canned Heat and is featured with them at Woodstock. This combination of styles and Musselwhite’s mastery of the harmonica is what makes this recording so special.
Only 5 tunes have vocals and 7 tunes are instrumentals. The songs are all magnificent; but at the same time there are different sounds that make each tune unique and listenable. Even if you don’t consider yourself a lover of blues, you can still like this album.
A few highlights are “Cha Cha the Blues” with its smooth shuffle. “Christo Redemptor” with its solemn elegant beauty.
“Help Me” with an upbeat intense version of the Sonny Boy Williamson classic blues tune.
“39th and Indiana” is a slow blues wonder with harp, guitar and organ in perfect harmony with each other.
“4PM” is a brilliant guitar workout written by Mandel.
“Sad Day” closes out the album with a somber organ based tune written by Barry Goldberg.
So just put this record on and lay back and enjoy the wonderful sounds that emanate from your speakers.
It will put you in a great mood for anything summer related.

A group of fun, rollicking songs from start to finish. The band here made something highly accessible and hit this one on all cylinders. Songs play best when cruising around. Day 14 of another great daily SOT feature and my choice today is not only another compilation outside of the normal SOT brief but also a multi artist choice, (tamla) MOTOWN GOLD. 3 disc set. If the British invasion led by The Beatles and followed by The Stones, The Who, The Kinks etc is generally considered the UK's pop soundtrack of the 60s, then for us in the UK, Motown was the US pop soundtrack of the 60s. Featuring a massive 82 great songs one and all by the likes of Diana Ross solo and with the Supremes, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, Steve Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, The 4 Tops, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Rare Earth, The Isley Brothers, Jnr Walker and many many more. Motown took influences from blues, rnb, gospel, rocknroll, soul and married those influences to some of the greatest, pop songwriting and most sublime pop hooks ever recorded via some of popular music's greatest ever artists. This is another set which is perfect for chilling out to at any time, but especially on a summers day on one's own or again guaranteed in a social gathering to further lift the mood and get people singing or even dancing in some cases, including yours truly, if he's 'had a few' (in my case I use the term dancing in its widest possible meaning) Whilst some of the songs are about heartbreak and break up, such is the sheer joyessness and exuberance of the music and the hooks, Motown has that ability to lift the mood. And of course it was hugely influential on a number of our favourite rockers and rock acts that followed in it's wake.

Hi, I've been trying to reply to you regarding my opinion on the Moody Blues album Strange Times. A communication breakdown after three attempts, I'll be quick and say that after giving the album a good listen I've come to the conclusion that l only really like four songs, English Sunset is a decent uptempo tune to start the album, My Little Lovely is a nice little ditty, The Swallow is my favourite track and Nothing Changes with it's spoken lyrics which reminds me a little of their early albums finishes the album nicely. There are a lot of lightweight songs such as Words You Say, awful! Wherever You Are and Love Don't Come Easy etc.etc. Maybe I'm comparing this later album to their early work and it doesn't come close to any of their phenomenal early songs I'm afraid.

Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. A fine selection. Personal pick today? The seventh studio album by this artist released just days after my 20th birthday in February 1976 on the Columbia label that hit seven charts including the US Billboard 200 (#2) and the US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop albums - the wonderfully enjoyable Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. Perhaps the commercial apex and which seems to have not yet gone out of style. Singles include Lowdown, Lido Shuffle, It's Over Now and What Can I Say. Pop rock and ballads galore with a bevy of musicians best read on Wikipedia or elsewhere but that included members of what would be Toto - David Hugate, David Paich ,& Jeff Porcaro. An album which was played heavily on business road trips of the 70s and one subject to The Curse as have bought the original LP, a cassette tap and was one of the first CDs purchased while changing the library from LP to CD. Thanks once again, Pete, for these daily episodes.

Hi everyone, hope our weekends are going well. I'm going to keep it fairly brief today, as there's a lot of sport to watch later, namely the men's final at Wimbledon and then the small matter of the European football final...
My pick today is unusual for me as I'm going for a "best of" compilation album by a band others have picked several times already, but as I couldn't decide on a specific studio album I decided to cheat...
    FOREIGNER "Records" (Atlantic, 1982)
This has the distinction of being the first album by the band I heard, thanks to our local library, and it will always be the band's best ever greatest hits album, because ut predates "That Song"... you know the one I mean!!
Cold As Ice, Feels Like The First Time, Juke Box Hero, Hot Blooded, Head Games, Dirty White Boy, Urgent... I mean, yes, it's melodic and they're labelled an AOR band, but this stuff rocks! Even the one big ballad on here, Waiting For A Girl Like You, manages to be acceptably saccharine. Unlike "That Song"...
Of course, I made it a mission to acquire the four studio albums these songs were taken from in pretty short order. All four are great Records, as is Records, for the summer...

Chris Rea - On The Beach, his 8th studio album. He's made a lot of excellent albums, some are gritter, rockier and/or bluesier than this. It does include the superb, lengthy It's All Gone, a sad tale of loss & decay, but most of it is more optimistic. Songs like the classic title track just provide a perfect sountrack for lazy, balmy, summer days.

Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. My pick today is COME AND GET IT: THE BEST OF APPLE RECORDS. I picked this mainly for the Badfinger tracks, like Come And Get It and Day After Day - powerpop bliss. Artists on this album were those selected by The Beatles for their own record label. And they were certainly hands-on! For example, Paul, George and Ringo (plus Eric Clapton) played on Sour Milk Sea by Jackie Lomax; Paul produced Those Were The Days, a huge worldwide hit for Mary Hopkin; and honorary Beatle, Billy Preston, is on here with That's The Way God Planned It (guitars by George & Eric, bass Keith Richards and drums Ginger Baker). And John & Yoko wrote God Save Us, a fundraising single for the UK satirical magazine Oz.

Instrumental albums that feature many great summer songs like Freeway Jam, Led Boots, Cause We've Ended As Lovers, Love Is Green, etc. I remember the local record store had the Wired album promotional poster on the wall and I tried over & over to get it from the owner but to no avail. I did get the Robin Trower Live promotional poster(& still have it)which is better for me cuz I'm a bigger Trower fan than Jeff Beck fan.
