- See combat against fearsome foes in this latest trailer for Black Myth: Wukong, an upcoming action-adventure RPG from developer Game Science. Black Myth: Wukong is set in the 16th Century and focuses on traditional Chinese folklore, and the game will be available in 2024.

what sets black myth wukong apart is not only because of ue5 but also the rich chinese cultural heritage it represents, and how the devs was able tofully capture that in the games arts. When the first trailer came out, the dev team spoke to an interview saying that there is not one ancient/ traditional chinese asset in epic database, most were japanese inspired. And in the coming development, the devs went all across china to collect photo scans of ancient chinese artifects, statues/sculptures and architecture... Every architectural and sculptural element in wukong, you can find real life versions of them. This went as detailed as the chinese fonts in the gamescom demo, the caligraphy was also collected from ancient chinese scripts, every poem describing each boss is either sourced from the original journey to the west or from a variety of ancient chinese texts.

There are no one ancient/ traditional Chinese asset in epic database because japan began to snatched a huge amount of ancient Chinese documents that the white colonial invaders could not understand at 200 years ago until the end of ww2.
The interview meant that when the past decades japan development video game China was seriously lagging behind in this field, so it was the most time-saving to use japanese architecture module the style inspired by China. However, after many Chinese players reported that this was wrong, they finally decided to visit key preserved monuments across the country to conduct comprehensive 3d scanning to build up they own database.

The artistic form in the beginning of the video here is“陕北三弦” "Shaanbei Sanxian," which is a common method used by storytellers in the northwest region of China. The instrument used is the Chinese“三弦” "sanxian," not the Japanese shamisen.

And it's well known that the Japanese learned a lot about Tang culture. On the contrary, the Japanese [Shamisen] may have absorbed elements of the Chinese [Sanxian].

As a Chinese who grew up watching the journey to the west, this game looks like a masterpiece.❤
This is my summary after demo hands-on. It offers some thrilling action gameplay. The bottom right of the screen shows an indicator for a single enhanced heavy hit with three levels of damage. It is accumulated through attacks and perfect dodges, and you can use light and heavy hit combos along with the enhanced hit to execute spectacular double heavy hit combos. It's not only immensely powerful, but also looks incredibly cool!
The game offers three stances namely smash form pillar form and thrust form, each leading to a different kind of heavy hit and enhanced heavy hit, which means different heavy hit combo and double heavy hit combo. These forms can be switched freely during combat, and all enhanced heavy hits can trigger hitstun.
1. The smash stance tempo is fastest one.A pro tip for skilled players is that you can make a parry by using a heavy hit combo at the exact moment right before the boss's attack lands on you.
2. The pillar stance’s enhanced hit allows you to stay in the air, avoiding some ground attacks and stylishly smashing back. However, maintaining this stance rapidly depletes your stamina.
3. The thrust stance’s enhanced heavy hit can stop the boss's rush at a distance when dealing with close combat bosses.
Additionally, the game offers various powerful abilities such as freezing, stiffening, clones and different transformation etc. The combat system is diverse, allowing you to choose different strategies to defeat different bosses, so it won’t suffer. Black Myth: Wukong encourages an active attacking style, not just defensive counterattacks. This is not a Sekiro or Souls-like game! The combat tempo is faster but still perilous. If your skills are up to par, you can continuously trigger a boss's hitstun, leading to smooth and thrilling combat.

This BGM doesn't have an official name or official lyrics yet, most of the lyric translations are deciphered by local gamers who understand this dialect.
The style of this music is a very folkloric singing method called 'shuōshū' (storytelling), and the language used is not Mandarin but Shanxi dialect. Performed by Shanbei storyteller artist Xiong Zhu Ying.
Also there are many professional interpretations of this song on BILIBILI, and indeed many plot details are hidden within it.

Apparently this game can run smoothly on 1660TI 1080p or dynamic 4K on 4070, however on consoles there are some issues with frame rate drops, they still have almost a year to polish this game, it will look even better by then.
