Hello Sandhya Aunty, I loved your Alapana SO MUCH!!! I also really loved the intricacies that are brought in this raga. :) -Divya Suri
    1. In this ragam Varali, I think the Swarasthana that brings a unique flavor to the ragam is the R1.
    2. A ragam like Varali is called a Vakra Ragam, Janya Ragam, Ghana ragam, Vivaadi Ragam, Arohana Vakra Ragam, Sampoorna Vakra Ragam
    3. In music the word Vadi means the most important swaram in a ragam and is usually the swaram where the singer can pause for a significant amount of time. The ragam is Vivadi when it contains Vivadi swarams, a ragam has Vivadi swarams when the swarams have to somehow depend on the Vadi swarams. When a swaram is Samvadi it is usually the second most prominent swara in a ragam.
    4. 5 other compositions in Varali raga Mishra Chaapu Tala are:
Mamava Padmanabha Sada- composed by Sri Swathi Thirunal
Vaddayude- composed by Sri Thyagaraja Swami
Karuna JuDavamma Vinamma- composed by Sri Shyama Sasthri
Kamakshi BangAru- composed by Sri Shyama Shastri
Prakruta JanulatO- composed by Sri Veena Kuppaiyer
    5. One of the Pancharathna Krithis was composed in Varali ragam, Adi Talam, by Sri Thyagaraja Swami; the name of the Krithi is Kanakana Ruchira
The names of the other four are:
    JagadAnanda KAraka: Nattai, Adi
    SAdhinchane: Aarabhi, Adi
    Endaro MahAnubhAvulu: Sri, Adi
    DuDukugala Nanne Dora: Gowla, Adi
    6. 5 other ragas with the same Ri, Ga, and Ma are Salagam, Jhalarnavam, Jhalavarali, Navaneetam, and Pavani.

Namaste Sandhya aunty, this is one of my all time most favorite kritis! All your alapanas in this ragam are extraordinary, wonderful and bring the ragam out to its fullest.
    1)
Shudda gandharam: G1 brings the flavor to this ragam. If this G1 was replaced with a G2 or G3, the Varali flavor would be 100% lost, even if everything else remains the same.
Prati Madhyamam: M2 is used in almost every phrase and is heard prominently throughout.
    2)
    Ghana ragam
    Janya ragam
    Vakra ragam
    Vivaadi ragam
    3)
Vaadi is a note that is key to giving a particular ragam its flavor. The vaadi swaram is usually repeated the most number of times compared to the other notes. The Vaadi swaram is also called the jeeva swaram. Without it, the ragam would become something completely different. It’s considered the king of that particular scale. Samvadi is the second most prominent note.
    4)
    1. Karunajudavamma - VarALi - Misra Chapu - Sri Shyama Shastri
    2. Eti Janmamidi - VarALi - Misra Chapu - Sri Thyagaraja Swami
    3. Kamakshi Amba Bangaru - VarALi - Misra Chapu - Sri Shyama Shastri
    4. Mamava Padmanabha - VarALi - Misra Chapu - Sri Swathi Tirunal
    5. Valapu Thaatsa - VarALi - Misra Chapu -Padam- Kshetrayya
    5)
    Kanakana ruchira- Varali- Adi
    Others:
    Jagadananda Karaka- Nattai- Adi
    Dudukugala Nanne dora- Gowla- Adi
    Sadhinchane- Arabhi- Adi
    Endaro Mahanubhavulu- Sri- Adi
    6)
    Salagam, Jalaarnavam, Navaneetam, Pavani, Raghupriya
    Thank you:)

Namaste Ms. Sandhya, this is Indu. I really enjoyed the kriti, Mamava Meenakshi played on the violin by you. The swift gamakas of Varali got me engrossed in the song! I loved how the nuances of your playing illuminated the ragam so much! Here is my quiz response for Mamava Meenakshi in the ragam Varali, in Misra Chapu talam, and Sri Muthuswami Dikshitar as the composer.
    1) What swarasthana/note in particular brings this unique flavor to Varaali?
I think that either the Prethi Madhyamam (M2) or the Shuddha Rishabham (R1) could be the jeevaswara of this raga, Varali. I thought of Prethi Madhyamam because it was the swara that started off the kriti and was elongated in some parts of this composition. The Shuddha Rishabham also imbibed a sympathetic feel to me based on some songs that I have listened to in this particular raga.
    2) What are such ragams like Varaali called? (It could fall under different groups, you can name all)
    - Varali is a vakra-sampoorna raga because it has all of the sapta swaras in it.
    - Varali is a janya raga because it is derived from the 39th Melakartha raga, Jhalavarali.
    - Varali is a ghana raga because it is one of the ragas in the Pancharatna Kritis composed by Sri Thyagaraja Swami - Kanakana Ruchira
    - Varali is a vivaadi raga because it has clashing swaras that sound extremely similar to each other.
    3) What do the terms Vaadi, samvaadi etc mean in Music?
Vaadi means the jeevaswara of the raga, and Samavaadi means the 2nd swara of a raga (in this case, Shuddha Rishabham [R1] is the 2nd swara of Varali)
    4) Name 5 other compositions in Varali and in Mishra chapu tala.
5 other compositions in Varali and in Misra Chapu Tala are:
    1. Kamakshi Amba Bangaru - Varali - Misra Chapu - Sri Shyama Shastri
    2. Eti Janmamidi - Varali - Misra Chapu - Sri Thyagaraja Swami
    3. Mamava Padmanabha - Varali - Misra Chapu - Sri Swathi Tirunal
    4. Valapu Thaatsa - Varali - Misra Chapu - Kshetrajna Padam
    5. Karunajudavamma - Varali - Misra Chapu - Sri Shyama Shastri
    5) Is one of the Pancharatna keertanas in this raga, if yes what are the others? If not, what are the five? ;-)
Yes, one of the Pancharatna Keerthanas is in Varali raga - Kanakana Ruchira composed by Sri Thyagaraja Swami.
The other 4 Pancharatna Kritis are Jagadanandakaraka in Nattai, Dudukugala Nanne in Goula, Sadhinchane in Arabhi, & Endaro Mahanubhavulu in Sri.
    6) Can you name 5 other ragas with the same variety of Ri, Ga and Ma?
Yes, I can think of Melakartha ragas with the same variety of Ri, Ga, & Ma. Salagam, Jalarnavam, Navaneetham, Pavani, & Raghupriya. Jhalavarali is also a raga with the same variety of Ri, Ga, & Ma, which is the parent raga of Varali.
    Thank you Ms. Sandhya.

🙏 Sandya garu. I tried my best in understanding. But not sure how many are correct. I am learning many new concepts and compositions in karnataka sangeetam, while trying to answer your questions.
    1) Varali in earmarked for Karuna and Sringara rasas. I think, the Sudha Gandharam that takes place of Chatusruti Rishabam has special significance. I think Varali Madyamam or Chyuta Panchama Madyamam with gamakas also has significance in ragam. Please correct me if i am wrong.
    2) Ghana Ragas or Ghanapanchaka
Nata, Goula, Arabhi, Varali & Sri
    3) Vaadi - is a note that is most sonant or has special significance. It is called Jeeva Swaram, 'G' is the Jeeva swaram in varali. Vadi is called King of the kingdom.
Samavadi or Samvadi - is called a cosonant, the second most prominent note. It is said as Prime Minister of the kingdom.
Vivadi - A swaram is vivadi in relationship with another swaram. Varali is a vivadi ragam, that has vivadi swaras. M & N are the vivadi swaras.
    4) Eti Janmamiti by Tyagaraja
    Kamakshi Bangara by Shyama Shastri
    Mamava Padmanabha by Swathi Tirunaal
    Shuddha Nirvikara by Achutadasar
    Karuna Judavamma by Shyama Shastri
    5) The 4th Pancharatna keerthana is in varali
    1. Jagadananda Karaka - Natai
    2. Duduku gala - Goula
    3. Sadhinchene - Arabhi
    4. Kanakana Ruchira - Varali
    5. Endaro Mahanubhavulu - Shree
