LGBTQ People and Gun Violence: Threats and Strategies to Promote Safety

  • On Thursday, June 13, 2024, the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and Williams Institute hosted a presentation and panel discussion on gun violence and the LGBTQ community. The Williams Institute's Blachford-Cooper Research Director Kerith Conron shared findings from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) on fears of gun violence among LGBT Californians, include significant differences among LGBT people of color.
    A panel of experts and advocates discussed the findings, as well as national data and how to address vulnerabilities and support LGBTQ communities in living well.
    Panelists discussed risk factors such as mental health, intimate partner violence, and gun access, the relations to hate and inequality, and actions that individuals and organizations can take to promote safety and well-being for LGBTQ people.
    Break-out groups followed the panel.
