    Heist has one great line:
“Don’t you want to hear my last words?”
    “I already did.”

Spielberg now agrees with Roger. He has recently said he regrets the changes he made, especially the walkie talkies.

I really disliked Shallow Hal when it came out and the concept really did not age well. I imagine I would dislike it more if I saw it again today.

I don't know about Shallow Hal. On the one side, I've never really been a fan of Jack Black - I think he's really obnoxious. On the other, the casting of Gwyneth Paltrow in a fat suit seems to emphasize not only HIS shallow nature but also that of the filmmakers. The movie DOES seem to make the point that how a woman appears is more important than the inner self. And yes, I know what the movie is TRYING to sell - I just never felt it did a good job selling it. Remember how the Farrellys felt it necessary to add Kate Upton in a bikini to their Three Stooges movie in what always seemed to me a conviction that they needed something to attract non-Stooge fans. It's the same shallow approach, and I think we have a right to resent that.
Of course, if the Farrellys had done it "right" - casting an overweight, unattractive woman, then let us see what Jack Black's character sees only from HIS point of view (ala Quantum Leap or some similar effect), every critic would rightly accuse the film of fat-shaming. Which I remain convinced it does anyway.

Heist has some of Mamet's greatest dialogue and Hackman & Devito are wonderful, but Roeper is right. The cons and the plot aren't nearly as good. Also, Sam Rockwell is much too comical looking to be taken seriously. His character is my least favorite thing about the film. The Heist isn't great Mamet, but it is good Mamet!! 3 stars.

I watched Heist when I was 9 or 10 years old. I remember finding it kind of boring then.

Heist was entertaining, some unique aspects and mostly cliché from a genre oversaturated with them. V interesting to watch the airport scenes knowing 911 happened same year

As Roeper said, it’s FANTASTIC as far as 2000s romantic comedies go. Watch “Along Came Polly,” and you’ll get what he means.

I think it was because The Farrelly’s put down their gross out comedy tools as they had shown in Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary and wanted to make a more grown up comedy and Shallow Hal was that. It was very funny but some scenes are actually very poignant. I think their maturity with the movie elevated it in these guys minds. Similar with Adam Sandler. They didn’t like what they perceived his immature comedies but when he made Punch Drunk Love they saw him in a different light.

I liked "Shallow Hal" when I saw it on TV. But I was also a pretty callow teenager at that time and I have since changed my mind about it. I can't understand grown men, who are movie critics no less, liking that stuff.

Don't be shallow don't make fun of overweight people then .. the movie's full of jokes making fun of overweight people like chairs breaking and pools emptying of water when somebody jumps in and drinking in a entire picture of milkshake etc etc

They went overboard with the Harry Potter worship. I saw it in 2001 and found it really dull. Watching it 20 years later, and my opinion hasn't changed. It only reminds me why I never watched any of the rest of the films in that franchise.

@@billscannell93 They didn't compare it to Wizard of Oz directly, just using it as an example that sometimes kids movies have things that are mildly scary. Though Roger did make an offhand comparison to Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

I agree the Harry Potter movies are all pretty mediocre, but in general these big Hollywood franchise family movies like Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars prequels all are graded differently than "serious" movies usually. Ebert looks at them from a fan's/family/mass audience perspective instead of giving a more critical eye to them. As a kid I liked the movies fine but wasn't really a fan. As an adult I agree they're pretty boring, nothing special going on.

I think the first 3 Harry Potter films are actually really great films right up there with the best adventure classics but I do think any comparisons to wizard of oz are ridiculous
