- In this episode, Siskel and Ebert review: Casualties of War, Rude Awakening, Uncle Buck, The Abyss and A Chorus of Disapproval.
I can’t forgive Roger for cutting Gene off just as he was about to tell us about the time he once testified at a court martial.
I loved the alien element in The Abyss. An amazing, timeless film.
Uncle Buck did have a dark streak but it made me laugh pretty hard. Thumbs up. Abyss thumbs down because of Michael Biehn's moustache.
great criticism
The mustache may be the best part of the movie. Two thumbs up for Biehn's Stache.
I wonder if either of them ever saw the extended cut of The Abyss. That cut is a masterpiece.
Disingenuous of Roger to say he didn't get why Gene kept saying CoW was a "small" picture. Gene was very clear about what he meant by that and why he was saying it. And he's right, when you look at the classic movies about Vietnam, like Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket and Platoon. Roger was trying to turn the statement into something it clearly wasn't.
I am glad Gene kept mentioning that CoW was a far intimate movie than the previous Vietnam epics. Unfortunately, that distinction is ultimately why the De Palma movie failed.
Hard to believe someone could dislike Uncle Buck, but i can only look at it from the perspective of a kid in the 80's, it will always be a classic to me.
Casualties of War is also brilliant imo.
Casualties of war is the Best Vietnam movie ever Made. Truely powerful and hard to sit through
@Byrons Reward in My view, yes. I don't have anything against those films but casualties told a much more cogent story which serves to buttress the fruitlessness of war, any war.
I agree. It’s tied with ***************Spoiler********* Jacob’s Ladder for me.
@Byrons Reward I'd say first two thirds of AN is brilliant and The Deer Hunter could have definitely stood for some more editing. Casualties of War is so much more effective.
I liked it and regret not seeing in the cinema (remember it playing at the second run cinema but my best friend wouldn`t go) .. but not as good as the Deer Hunter or Platoon
Very hard to sit through. I remember watching it once and had to stop.
Every one of those creatures should have been executed.
The Abyss is so underrated, even in a 2 thumb up review. Always appreciate Roger defending sci fi and recognizing Mary Elizabeth Masterantonios performance. Surprised no mention of Ed Harris or James Cameron!
I wonder what Genes thoughts would be a few years later when the longer version, the more complete version, would be released.
@@Nathan-fk5xk I don’t think he’d care for it. I think he preferred the Cold War thrills and love story. He seemed to think the NTIs were tacked on.
I saw the long version in the cinema and thought it was kind of cheesy....
Honestly thought that movie was so boring, I’ll try it again.
The Abyss is one of Mary and Ed's best
Going from Casualties to Rude Awakening is a bit jarring like when S&E went from Shoah to Death Wish 3!
ET clone?? Come on. These guys took forever to appreciate the work of James Cameron. He gave us the first glimpse into his love for bioluminescence. Gale Anne Hurd? No. The magic of The Abyss, Aliens and The Terminator is all due to James Cameron.
I can't wait to get The Abyss and True Lies on Blu-ray. These guys have no idea how great The Abyss actually was. The Special Edition is fantastic
How is The Abyss, in any way, "an E.T. clone"??
Uncle buck is an absolute classic. Another big miss for S and E.
Thumbs down for Uncle Buck????
S&E had some baaaaaaaaad tastes.
Just keep in mind that Ebert liked Cop and a Half, Anaconda, Speed 2, and Congo, while Siskel disliked Unforgiven, Blade Runner, What About Bob, Christmas Vacation, Terminator and Beverly Hills Cop
🤮
Frr. This is why I don’t care for critics at all 💀
Uncle Buck is a great sleeper classic
