I just turned twenty three today and I'm ten months sober. I can't believe how close I was to cutting my life so short and I am still coming to terms with what it's like to be sober when you're an age famously known for being the partying years. I've spent my teenage and early adult years associating my birthday with substance use so today was hard. This helped

Juiceboxbrian, I hope you’re still doing well. I totally understand that. ‘Big’ days (or any days, really) are hard at first, but the more of them that pass, the easier it gets. I’m at 901 days today (consecutively, from drugs and alcohol), so quite a few big ones have come and gone, and at 31 I’m just so grateful to have the rest of my life. Please try to be patient and kind to yourself. All the best to you and anyone else reading this.

I nearly lost everything including my kids, my family, my friends, my home, my life (narcan on 2 occasions), and I did lose my job of 11 years. I take my sobriety extremely serious and applaud anyone that finds strength to dig themselves out of the darkness of addiction and share their story.

I've never been obsessed with sobriety enough to count it for 2,375 days. IF you think about your previous addiction everyday and can't stop counting the days, then you are still an addict in my mind.

    • @JonJosephKuhn
      @JonJosephKuhn 2 года назад +3

@@smeaglerG that's the point. You can't cure addiction. You don't ever beat it. You come to terms with it and you choose to no longer consume.

    • @kaio37k
      @kaio37k 2 года назад +1

@@smeaglerG Some have different ways of processing it, and that's the point. No man (mankind, not men) is any better or any worse for being born with or without the properties of the brain that enable severe addiction. What makes a person strong knowing they have a predisposition to addiction, and learn to COPE with it, because you cannot defeat it, it's built into your brain.
I've never had an addiction, despite being surrounded by alcoholics all my life, I'm just lucky I suppose, but I'm always greatly inspired by addicts who turn their life around. I think it's humbling, knowing my own struggles with life, and then seeing others struggling just as bad and worse, but overcoming it, it gives me hope.

    I'm turning 26 on july 27th.
I am a year and 5 months sober.
    I used drugs from 14 until I was 24.
Starting with psychedelics to everything in between up until starting heroin and $10 bags of meth to go along with it and using only those two for the last year of substance abuse.
    The 10th year of abuse.
I met my fiance 2 days after using heroin for the first time september 17th, 2018.
September 19th, 2018 was when I first met her. A manager at the pizza hut I had gotten a job at so that delivery driving could fund my heroin that i knew i was already unable to give up.
She was 25. She had a 2 year old named pepper. She had a party phase that lasted about a year when she was 19. She was sober ever since and never wanted or needed to touch substances. She met me.
We fought. We had joy. I had that I was an addict. We had tears and begging for more. Angry and wanting of less. We got pregnant. I hid that i was an addict. We had a miscarriage. I broke and slipped and she found me out. My double life.
She yelled, belittled, understood and contradicted understanding. She was confused. I was confusing.
She couldnt leave and I would need any reason to keep using.
    We got pregnant again.
Not even 2 months after our miscarriage.
    I kept using.
    We grew and grew apart.
We fought and fought to stay together.
I hurt her in more ways than i could've ever imagined with my self destructive manic episodes.
I went to jail for the first time.
My mother picked me up after 7 days in city jail.
I bought heroin that night with my commissary check with my left over funds on it.
    I lied again.
I went to rehab soon after.
I begged my pregnant fiance to let me smoke heroin one more time.
    I went inside december 20th, 2019.
I came out 7 days later for the birth of my daughter. Our second daughter, december 27th, 2019.
    I used again.
January 2020. The new year. I have a daughter now, my first born. A step daughter and a fiance.
My fiance gets a lead position at frito lay and kickstarts the rest of our life as soon as im sober.
    A stay at home dad.
Something i could've never imagined being.
    Living with a sound mind.
    I don't use again.
    I haven't used again.
Everyday I chose until somehow it didn't feel like i had to choose.
I have been free from it for almost a year and 5 months.
I am getting married to the strongest and most dedicated woman I have ever known in just 6 days.
In all facets of her life she has conquered thus far.
    I am grateful.
    I am lucky.
    I'm loved.
    I love.
    Thank you Van.
For making me feel so in tune with this work of art. For letting myself and others soak it in and share ourselves.

I hope you truly know that your work inevitably comes at a really invaluable time for a lot of your viewers. However long this gig lasts, these uploads aren't going anywhere, and they'll keep meaning something until the website goes down, likely even after that. Each story means everything, and each one of them alone is enough. You're leading a vision quest man.

I gave up cigarettes in July 2020, alcohol and substances in December 2020. ~730 days sober.
I was not at any point of reliance or abuse as others in this comment section, but did feel a grip that each of them had on my life.
This video touched me in a way I never knew possible. Thank you.

Hi Van, I'm a 22 year old man who is by no means sober and this video is one of the most touching and beautiful things I've ever seen. Alcohol has been a factor in some of the best and worst nights and days of my life, and I know that one day it will stop feeling like the good outweighs the bad. When I inevitably decide to quit drinking, get sober, be substance-free or all of the above, I will have this video to credit as the catalyst for my decision. Thank you for now, and thank you for then.

Almost feels like he’s still convincing himself to not give up even after all those days sober, reminding himself that all other lovely things in life happen due to his sobriety. I’m barely into my sobriety and it feels the same. My brain constantly convincing me to go back while I argue in my head giving myself reasoning and sh…it is what it is i guess

That's apart of the AA/NA literature. We know that we are powerless over drugs and alcohol, and all it takes is one slip up to be right back in the thick of it. Gotta take it one day a time.

Dear Van, thank you for this video and its simplicity, its lack of resolution. This has been a good reminder to me to appreciate my own sobriety, which I often take for granted -- I've been watching your videos for quite some time now, totally captivated though afrai to admit it. Until now, I think I had been resisting a feeling that goes something like "I really like this guy, he reminds me of so many of my favorite people, and a part of myself I want to nuture. The earnest part. The part that gives energy to turning simple things into art. The part that is not afraid to step forth and let it be known that I dont really know what I am doing"... I had been resisting this because I told myself a long time ago that I was done collecting white male role models. The world has enough, I have enough. Let's find someone else who looks more like me... and well, I think your approach in this video, the sort of "I can't explain it, it just works" has given me just what I needed to let go of that hang up. I just want to say thank you for your spirit and vulnerability. We take the inspiration/motivation in whatever form it comes.
