His "whispery" voice that everyone finds so annoying is just the product of him trying to sing like his hero, Stevie Ray Vaughan. I think its a very interesting and unique characteristic of him.

Not that Hendrix is mediocre or something, its just that JM is pretty freaking good. I personally I like the guitar playing in the original, but the vocals in this. The traffic lights, they turn blue tomorrow
And shine emptiness down down on my bed
A tiny island sags downstream
'Cause the life that lived is dead
And the wind it cries
"Mary" x2
(Instrumental)
Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past?
And with this crutch
Its old age and wisdom
It whispers, "No, this won’t be the last"
And the wind cries
"Mary" x2
Yea i like this version allot it's so unique it's crazy good
Wow...nothing else to say but Wow.
In all honesty I think if Hendrix could have heard Mayer's version he would be impressed and mostly feel honoured. Hendrix was a modest, gifted, inventive, FUN musician.
Wow. I can't believe so many people are hating on JM. His guitar skills are on par with Hendrix and his vocals surpass Hendrix. Not that Hendrix is mediocre or something, its just that JM is pretty freaking good. I personally I like the guitar playing in the original, but the vocals in this. And FYI JM's cover of "Wait Until Tomorrow" blew Hendrix's out of the water. And JM is waaay more versatile than Hendrix. Check out the Live album "Where the Light is". Its amazing.
That's absolutely right man!
guitar sound is very Amazing.
Amazing playing
I don’t understand any of the hate on this cover or towards John. I must be listening to something completely different than what most of the comments describe. This cover is fantastic because it’s John doing his take. Respect that realize that he’s a once in a lifetime musician. Enjoy it
Kevin Niehoff It’s because the people hating on it already have a predisposed opinion and bias prior to even listening to the song.
SHIIT this is good, how could i've never heard this
Man,of course nobody can play this like Jimi, because John Mayer is no Jimi Hendrix!John Mayer its a great artist, and he brings out feelings with his music, his art.Every artist plays a song in his unique style, art means originality and feelings. You have no right to tell an artist what to play, your right is to like or not, listen or not.Im sure Jimi is proud of all the artists who were inspired by him.
