Dirt from floor and walls stick and gets compressed.on the ball. You can reuse shiny balls by using a abrasive dish pad and some washing up liquid. Water in the ball is there to maintain and increase pressure and heat in the ball when you whack it.

Nice video, I would also like to add a tip. Don't only judge a squash ball by how rubbery or gritty it is. I find a more important metric is how squishable the ball is. The more squishy it feels, the less it is going to bounce and the worse the experience you will have. A more solid feeling ball when you squeeze it is going to lead to a better playing experience. But use both metrics! If a ball is robust and gritty it is perfect for playing.

Some balls that are becoming smooth can be cleaned up by using your hands. Put the ball into your palm and then twist your hands in opposite directions. The friction takes off the outer layer of rubber of grit and grime bringing it back to like original type finish. The wetness is the condensation created when the ball heats up.

The moist in a squash ball is probably there to get (and keep) temperature in the ball. I think it's also the reason (tip for lazy players! 😁) why you can perfectly warm the ball up using a micro wave. 😂

The way you cut the ball with that terrible knife technique had me shivering during the entire process

I think they are all wet inside. I cut a brand new one and it was wet as well.
