🇬🇧➡️🇮🇪 WHY HAS THIS CLUB REPRESENTED TWO NATIONS?! - Derry City Football Club

  • Derry City Football Club have a really interesting history. Although they're located within Northern Ireland, they play in the league system of the Republic of Ireland.
    The history of Derry/Londonderry is very complicated and has impacts on the football club to this date. The supporters of the club are mostly Catholic and thus relate more to the League of Ireland Premier Division teams.
    They've represented the IFA and FAI in UEFA competitions. The men's and women's teams even play in different countries!

    Just got back from a week in Northern Ireland. Two days in Belfast , one in Bushmills and Giants Causeway. Finished off in Derry for two nights. Derry was my favourite place ,bags of history and great pubs. You made this Welshman very welcome. Glad to see a lasting peace.

    Derry City fact you missed. The colours they play in came from Sheffield United.
    Billy Gillespie an Irishman who played nearly 500 games for The Blades became Derry City manager and adopted Sheffield United's red and white stripes black shorts for Derry. The Candystripes as they're known in Derry❤🤍❤. Up The Blades⚔ and up The Candystripes🇮🇪👍

      I’m not sure why but there’s a small band of Sheffield United fans that follow St.Patrick’s Athletic (which kills me because while I’m a Pat’s supporter now living in Dublin I was born and raised in Barnsley) sadly today is the anniversary of Chris Booth a Blade/Pat’s supporter who passed away while in Warsaw for a St. Pat’s champions league qualifier, R.I.P Chris.
      I’d never heard of the Derry/Blades connection but it’s weird but good how these things come about.

      The Candystripes nickname also comes from Sheff Utd. It was their nickname back in the 1800s before they became the Blades (because in the early days, Sheff Weds were known as the Blades before they in turn became "The Pigs" due to their founding Chairman working in the butchery department of the local Co-op. As a side note, this is where Wednesday's blue and white stripes come from (butcher's apron) and why the name Wednesday was chosen.They played on Weds afternoons - early closing day in the city)
      The more recent link between Sheff Utd and St Pat's may be down to players like the iconic Del Geary (who is still working for Sheff Utd) who moved from Dublin to Bramall Lane.

    • @gravvin845
      @gravvin845 Год назад +1

      @@BadDubII GAA colours are derived from the red hand of ulster, can't be just coincidence. Red had always been in the GAA jersey, though the current white shirt with red hoop only was adopted in the 1940s. I'm sure the Derry City and Derry GAA shirts are informed by the colour red in the red hand of Ulster.

    Great job...but...you got to stop saying 'Ireland, Northern Ireland' differentiating, it's just wrong and weird. 'Ireland' is the island of Ireland, it even takes in both jurisdictions, the Republic and the north. Keep it in mind. Even the Protestant churches in all of Ireland recognise the terminology as such, such as the Church of Ireland, Presbyterian Church of Ireland etc etc even the sectarian Orange Order is known as the Grand Orange Lodge of 'Ireland'. Ireland means ALL of the island and it's islands.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno 2 года назад +1

      The official name of the country is “Ireland”. He’s absolutely correct. It’s the name lodged with the United Nations and it is the official name in our constitution. Of course, lots of Northern organisations like to claim the name only refers to the whole island and therefore we shouldn’t use it but facts beg to differ. “Rep. of Ireland” is a descriptor. Like the “French Republic” or “République Française” is a descriptor of the country called “France”.

    • @NintyFamily
      @NintyFamily 2 года назад +1

      @@Dreyno I was making the point principally that 'Ireland' means the entire Island and it's Islands, which is undeniable. Confusingly to outsiders this monicker contains two jurisdictions, namely the U.K (the region of Northern Ireland) and constitutionally 'Ireland' via the southern states constitution (Also known as the Republic and The Republic of Ireland). Mostly using the term Ireland when saying "Crossing into Ireland from Northern Ireland" sounds to most within the entirety of Ireland as weird. He's always in Ireland, even the name Northern 'Ireland' says this, the clue is in the name.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno 2 года назад

      @@NintyFamily The country is Ireland. It’s in our constitution. I don’t much care if some people are confused or annoyed that the official name of the country is, simply, Ireland. That the island is also called that is an aside. It does not take precedent.
      It’s refreshing that this young man has learned this and uses the correct term unlike so many of his countrymen who insist on using “the Rep. of Ireland”, which, if we’re honest, is almost never used in Ireland u less referencing the football team, or even worse, “Eire”.

      @@Dreyno Country= Ireland 1 state and 1 artificial statelet. Northern Ireland isn't a country either...fact, it doesn't 'officially' have it's own flag or indeed an anthem, the flag which was abolished in 1973, unlike England, Wales or Scotland over in Britain. Also we get that you are a passionate partitionist.

    The Northern Ireland football team is essentially just a Protestant fan base, Catholic players are allowed to play for Republic now which has cemented Catholics support for the Republic. I personally don't support any.
    The most popular sport for Irish Catholics is Gaelic Football, this sport is very weak in Derry city but strong in the rural areas of the county. Gaelic Football is actually quite strong in Belfast though.
