This monument of a Unknown Soldier survived the explosion of the whole palace by Germans. They tried to blow it up wcfew times but it did not work. So, this piece of the building was left againt their intention. It was already late abd Germans had to leave.

The palace under reconstruction near the Unknown Soldier Monument was not destroyed during any battles or military action of any kind. It was blown up to pieces by Germans in 1944 to erase any traces of Polish tradition and culture forever. Actually first they robbed it of all furniture, statures, art, even pipes and cables. Then they torched it thoroughtly with flame throwers and then blew up (becuse their experts calcuated that burnt out ruins require less explosives to achieve complete destruciton). The same for Royal Castle you walked by later and countless of buildings throughout the city. Only the Old Town was leveled as a result of bobardment during Warsaw uprising in the summer of 1944. If it feels a bit unnatural it is because it is a "new" Old Town. It was rebuilt from the ground level after the II World War. There are just handful of walls that remained original. It is, nevertheless, a very thorought copy.
