@SmilesAllDay420 I can't remember exactly how she is related to me, but I believe she's my Grandfather's Aunt/Great Aunt or something.
We still actually have family in Ireland that live in a town called Cork. My grandmother told me her story when I was younger! It is very much appreciated hearing a more sympathetic take on her story! I live in NY myself and would find it to be so cool to see where she was living in quarantine. Although I doubt that will ever be possible!

Probably because they were able to work at some distance from the wealthy people of high society and could only infect other poor men (easily replaced), whereas most poor women worked in domestic service and could easily infect important people. Also, sexism.

As if I couldn't love you any more Bailey, thank you for treating Mary Mallon with kindness. And especially how you spoke of the terrible times that the Irish endured during an "An Gorta Mór" the great hunger. Alot of people called it a famine to detract from how the British treated the Irish. The food was plenty but as you said it was shipped off and the Irish were left to starve and die, and the others they left in their droves. Ireland stands today at just over 6 million.

Here's the thing, People say she was wrong for working in a maternity hospital knowing she was suspected to be a carrier. The thing is if you put historical context into play she was an Irish Immigrant woman in USA she probably believed that they were purposely targeting her or these reasons and she was healthy. I'm sure there are Irish people out there from that era who would be sure she wasn't a carrier but a victim of Xenophobia

I've always felt terribly sorry for Mary. She took the long perilous journey to the US to escape the abject poverty and hunger in Ireland at the time. She started again from scratch all on her own. The realisation that she was a carrier of disease must have been appalling to her. But when faced with homelessness and starvation, or continue working to survive, well that's a difficult choice. It's probably right what you say about her being female. But also I think if she'd have played along with Dr Soper from the start there might have been a happier outcome. Poor Mary 😷🤒🥺

Bless her soul but at the same time she definitely should have taken some precautions. Bless the soul of those she unsliced and also those who got sick in general from all 3 carriers who didn't care enough to protect others.

I just feel like Mary was the victim of human rights violations because she was a poor Irish woman. Maybe it was these men who were running around with typhoid. Maybe it was in the water. It sounds like she tested negative a lot more than positive. And there was this doctor trying to make a name for himself at her expense.

Bailey, I love your work (I watch or listen every day), but I especially love the medical and anatomy based Dark History content! This past year, I got really sick with a mystery disease that attacked my eyes, heart, and brain, and long story short, it ended up being Lyme disease. It wasn't until after my diagnosis that I learned how differently it affects everyone and that it's a man-made disease, and I feel like more people should know this! So, would you please do an episode on the dark history of Lyme disease?
