Becky--It might be really helpful for you to keep pruners down in the garden. I have a small old mailbox that I keep pruners and gloves, scissors and yarn to tie up tomatoes. Saves trips to the garden shed and makes it easier to harvest

Here is a tip I use for summer parties. Whatever your serving for drinks like ice tea or lemonade. grab a few solo cups and pour some lemonade or whatever in the plastic cups and freeze them. At the time of the party pop them out and put in the pitchers.....that way your drinks don't get watered down ....you can also make some in ice cube trays to place in drinks as well

i freeze lots of things in ice cube trays. once they are frozen u can save them in ziplock bags. these are good for individual drinks. the larger the pitcher or punch bowl is the larger ur 'ice' should be because it lasts longer. just make sure whatever ur freezing it in doesnt break from the expansion of the 'ice.'

I think we’ve all had horrible incidents that years later are laughed about. One Thanksgiving Mom was taking the turkey out of the wall oven and had the pan resting on the door to turn around and grab another pot holder and the oven door fell off. Turkey went skidding across the room. My sister and I calmly picked up the turkey and everything, rinsed the turkey off and went on. Was one of the best times we had.
I’m sorry about the freezer. I’ve lost a full freezer and fridge of stuff during power outages. Big hugs!

Yes I lost about $2000 worth from freezers and fridges when we lost power for 5 days during a big storm, insurance only covered $500 worth of food 😢 I was so scared to refill any of my freezers, upright and chest, so I just used the freezers in my fridges for about 5 months 😂

I’m so sorry to hear about your freezer mishap. It happens to all of us! I didn’t leave our freezer door open. Instead, I left about $70 worth of ground turkey out. I keep our meats separated in reusable bags and apparently didn’t realize I had left one out. Once I discovered my mistake (2 days later) I was pretty upset to say the least. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You live and you learn!
I’m not a huge potato salad fan but the loaded baked potato salad you made looked delicious! I’m going to make it the next time we have a get together.

One thing weve used for the upright and the chest freezers (because of having children) are the Velcro straps that you can glue to the edges of the doors or the chest lids...This works wonderful for us and is secure! I always have full hands at the freezers and the keys were never practical enough for our busy lives. The strong Velcro straps were put on with extra glue for our peace of mind and protection against little ones who might wander in and want to open doors and play. We love having (industrial Velcro) on ours.

My parents had a upright freezer for basically the same reasons you do, in the basement. When my brother was young he would occasionally open it to see if it had Popsicles or something else that he could take and then not close it tightly. Being in the basement nobody could hear the small beep of the door alarm. After the 2nd or 3rd time he did this my father put a lock on it. When he was a few years older he put a very loud door alarm, the type that is sold for rentals and hotel rooms that attach with 2 sided sticky tape or screws. If someone didn't close the door all the way we could hear the alarm upstairs. No more stealing or open doors as he didn't know how to pause the alarm. It's cheaper than replacing all the food or finding a new freezer.

I have been so lucky with my stainless steel fridge and dishwasher, etc. I bought my fridge 15-16 years ago at Sears and it was advertised as spot free, or fingerprint free and I tell you, it was the best decision I’ve ever made to buy it. It’s awesome and true to what they advertised, unless you have food spread on the handle or front, there are no fingerprints on it. It’s amazing. Not sure if and when this one breaks down I’ll be able to get the same type of finish on it, we’ll have to see. I love it. I also picked up these super rags that you wash down windows, stainless steel, glass with them and all you use is hot water on them. Nothing else. Best rags I’ve ever had. I love cleaning my house as long as I have the proper rags, etc to clean it with. You’re a hard worker Becky. You inspire me each day I watch you.

We've all had freezer disasters Becky. My folks lost 2 uprights and the contents due to a lightning strike. I lost power for 9 days twice because of hurricane aftermath.
Once when the fridge/ freezer died I put off taking the last bag to the dumpster and promptly forgot about it. Next morning I woke to a strange sour yeasty oder.
The bread dough climbed out the trash can and walked to the kitchen door to greet me.
What a disaster before coffee! 😮😂

My folks did file an insurance claim and it was denied.
Lighting hit a transformer outside and that sent a power surge through the house way back before surge protectors existed.
Pretty much everything plugged in was fried. The freezers were just part of the claim.
      Insurers called it an
" Act of God " and denied the claim.🤷‍♀️

@queeniemaja4189 i think ur coverage will depend entirely on what coverage u chose. that being said, my daughter has state farm insurance. ur best bet is to ask ur insurance company what kind of coverage u need to cover specific losses. if u dont get a satisfactory answer it's time to go insurance shopping.

    • @rosemaryus-ct6151
      @rosemaryus-ct6151 9 месяцев назад

@queeniemaja4189 oh for readers who dont know... if u live in a flood plain u have to buy flood insurance separate from homeowners and yes it has gotten more and more expensive. but if u lost food because of a power outage regular homeowners should cover that. on the other hand u guys get smacked with hurricanes and flood waters all the time. not a good place to be insurance-wise. i know it's the poorer people who get stuck living in the worst hit places. on the other hand i dont understand why people choose to live where they know their houses will be destroyed... or why insurance would agree to cover that over and over again. if u cant build a house that will survive the elements maybe it shouldnt be possible to get building permits there or building standards need to change. with all due respect, not trying to be mean. i just dont understand why, especially that global warming is making weather so much worse and forest fires and all that.

Sweet Becky!!! My heart just broke with you at the loss of the meals in the freezer. I know that you have gotten to the point where you have given yourself grace over that and you know we were all sending you hugs when you shared what happened. Of course the timing of when you are so excited right before every one arrives for the party didn’t help much at all. Almost all of us have those nightmare situations that work out in the end. And you precious sister was able to help save the day by bringing burgers and grilling. So thankful that nothing was ruined with the grill catching on fire!!! We keep a squirt bottle of water by the grill for those flare ups. By now you have probably researched and have got alarms that alert your phone or whatever the newest thing is so this will never happen again to any of your full freezers again. Thank you for sharing your life to inspire us all.

I’m so sorry to hear about your freezer and I understand the devastation. When my kids were teenagers someone didn’t close the freezer door all the way. I didn’t notice for two days. I had just bought a case of chicken and since it was summer I had stocked it full of ice cream treats for my kids and their friends. I also had freezer meals prepped for those busy summer days. It was a melted ice cream, chicken juice mess that had spilled out not only all over the freezer but all on my garage floor! I cried. I scrubbed. Called our insurance and restocked. Now every refrigerator and freezer door is checked before I go to bed.
