Thanks for the chat and being such a good sport about trying my camera out! I loved seeing your take on the camera and monochrome only in general. It's a good exercise for anyone to do every now and then. Whether with film, jpeg profile, or monochrome converted. P.s. that chunky Pentax is so cute. Looking forward to that 😀
How many cameras have an option to shoot monochrome? I’ve been using a Olympus Pen F monochrome mode. Quite nice, I know, it isn’t a Pentax. Sorry about that. It is compact and easy to use. I suppose I could use a Pentax Q? If I had one.
To be fair. I also use a Pentax MX and an ME. I’d buy an LX if I could. Or one of those rare MSX cameras (did I get that right). I tend to like film. The medium format digital 645z, now!
UPDATES + CORRECTIONS: MG Leisure who did this beautiful conversion corrected a misunderstanding on my part as to what gets effected in the conversion process. I thought it was the shake reduction that was effected but he said "only the ultrasonic dust removal function will not work in some models, but this is not shake reduction (SR). SR will always work and is not related to sensor conversion." Additionally some have asked why convert if you can just switch to B+W in camera or in post from a color image. I sadly lost the clip where I talked about that so it didn't make it into the edit but in short, the technical advantage is that images are sharper (no anti aliasing filter) and have lower noise (the removal of the color filter array let's more light onto the sensor). James has a good overview in his review of the camera here: ruclips.net/video/jRees9FA88U/видео.html I'll add that the more nuanced advantages is just the incredible tonality of the sensor with the CFA removed as well as the creative limitation of not being able to switch the profile back to color. There is something intangibly brilliant about the experience and I highly recommend it. Finally, Florian Cramer pointed out below that "Open Source raw converters like Darktable and RawTherapee can process raw pictures from monochrome-converted cameras without prior file conversion. You only need to switch their Demosaicing method to "Mono" (Rawtherapee) respectively "passthrough/monochrome" (Darktable). Both use libraw as their underlying demosaicing engine, which is also used by Monochrome2DNG." On the subject of monochrome cameras, Mattias Burling has put up a video on the Pixii and its monochrome mode which seems to be pretty interesting even though not a pure monochrome-only camera.
I’ve really enjoyed seeing your images from this camera show up on IG. For a long time I looked at Leica making monochrome cameras and rolled my eyes. It seemed like a gimmick and a way to fleece money from dentists and lawyers who wanted to buy an expensive camera. But I recently managed to score the original Leica M Monochrome, which is essentially the M9 stripped of its Bayer array. I have been simply blown away by what this 13 year old camera can make. The dynamic range is much better than on normal CCDs and like you I’ve found myself editing them only minimally. I’ve pushed to ISOs that I’d never try on my M9, and the grain just comes out looking like film. I’m a true believer in it now, and at some point I intend to pick up a Pixii as well.
Wow so cool! I was with you; never really understood why someone would spend money for a black and white camera but now I am totally hooked and converted. I think the M9M or Pixii would be dream additions.
I got a Leica M Monochrom (CCD) and initially I was unsure. But forcing myself to use it I absolutely love it. Even it can recover plenty from shadows and highlights as long as you don’t completely blow it. My friend who shoots Leica professionally said it’s as close to film as I’ll get and never sell it
@@OneMonthTwoCameras if it helps your decision - trade the m9 in for one and keep the m8. I def have too many cameras. I think I’ll stop when I get a q2 lol
I have a K-5 that I keep exclusively for black and white. I've not had it converted, I've merely tweaked it using the parameter adjustments and find it highly satisfactory, particularly when I select an ISO speed of ISO 80/100/125.
best cam channel! The BW photos looked great, I almost sent my griii to have the color filter removed but love the posi film too much. 😁 oh and nice mentos muzak ending theme. Keep the great content coming!!
I've always been obsessed with Monochrome only cameras and that's probably why I interviewed the owner of MaxMax all those years ago (it's on Steve Huff), but to be totally honest, once I got a Foveon (dp1) I felt less and less like a "regular" monochrome camera did it for me. Since SPP remembers the color profile you've selected, I almost never get tempted to look at the color versions, and only the sd Quattro do I choose to shoot in color...strange, I know. Having my DP2M is probably the reason I got the M240 instead of the Mono version...they ONLY Foveon user that shoots 99% Mono. :P
This truly is a shining light for the Foveon.Totally different experience but man you know how much I love my Sigmas. This camera feels a bit more cinematic dare I say simply because it's softer and you can put those limited lenses on and feel like you're living in a movie. I mean, gotta have both amirite?? :P
Another Foveon black and white fanboy here, and funnily enough like you the DP2M/SD Quattro combination is keeping me from being tempted by a b&w only body.
Very cool video and the results from that camera is beautiful. My main digital camera right now is a K5 IIs and I love it. For black and white I think I will be sticking to my film cameras and Ilford/Kentmere films.
Excellent illuminating and entertaining video as usual. I'd be interested in hearing more about not having to post process any of the Pentax monochrome converted images SOOC. Like you, I love the process of post processing and I feel that there is always at least a little tweak that can be done to make the image more perfect.
Thank you Russ! It's true, a little tweak can go a long way but I very truly loved how these images came out and if I nailed the exposure, it was just a chef's kiss that I found lost some of its magic the moment I tried to put my grimy post processing hands on it :)
Interesting vid and collab! Just to share: in 2021 I challenged myself to shoot only monochrome for 365 days, both film and digital (monochrome jpeg mode). I honestly found it difficult to abstain from color! For me it was a sacrifice, akin to abstaining from ice cream or meat, haha. Going exclusively mono for a week or a month is a fun project, but a whole year was just too much for me, haha!
oh, and your sample files work PERFECTLY dropping right into DxO FilmPack 6 and selecting Tri-X. The "flatness" of these monochrome files is almost like shooting LOG and using FP 6 to grade. Super simple.
Very interesting. I did some photos the other day around the old part of my town and I don't normally do much post-processing. But I had a play with some of the standard filters available in the Apple Photos App and the Noir profile certainly gave my photos a definite improvement. I will export the colour and B/W versions and share them on line. I might also repeat the shots with some FP4 B/W film. Thank you for your continued inspiration and motivation. @@OneMonthTwoCameras I love using my Sigma DP1 as a Hasselblad XPan clone: set the format to 21:9 and JPG to B&W, but also saving as RAW as a reserve (remains full colour and 3:2).
