    Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

    You can actually see her rage at the hair story. Compare that to her story of being bullied. People complain about being too politically correct, but those complaints are what keeps a person of color from telling a white person that they don't understand something that they're unfamiliar with.

    • @Antifrost

      *Trust me.*

    • @4bfam
      @4bfam 8 лет назад +19

      A. Absolutely no rage when she told the story.
      B. She probably didn't say anything because she didn't want to treat the woman as if she didn't know her job. She said she didn't want to disrespect her. Also, I'm sure she has politely spoken up since. Sometimes we give people a chance before assuming. I'm sure the hair dresser was already embarrassed.

    • @Xineal
      @Xineal 8 лет назад +37

      Re: A. at 8:15, her voice cracks, and her lips tremble, and even Stephen is prompted to lighten the situation by telling her she has lovely hair. When I say "rage" I'm not saying she wanted to punch the hairdresser or anything, I'm talking about the "rage" anyone feels when they're constantly having to face a situation where they feel unable to speak up, because they know people would react negatively.
      Re: B. Yes, yes, yes to all this, but more. She KNEW the hairstylist didn't know what to do, because she's probably encountered this before, where a hairstylist is unfamiliar with the different treatment required for kinky curly hair that's common for black people.
      It's not a matter of being polite. No matter how polite you are, there's no way to avoid the discomfort that comes when you have to explain that things work differently with you because of your race. People who don't experience sometimes call it "playing the race card," and don't realize how awkward and frustrating it can be.

    • @MrArich96
      @MrArich96 8 лет назад +15

      @Xcuze it can be seen as rude, especially if you're trying to critique a professional. Viola is not wrong, you are.

    • @Xineal
      @Xineal 8 лет назад +21

      Viola doesn't have "problem hair" as you've said some white people do in your example. She has hair typical to her race, and that is the difference here. You can tell a professional if your hair is abnormal. You can't tell a professional that your hair is perfectly normal, but you have a feeling that professional won't be able to deal with it because they probably predominantly work with white people. It does get awkward, and it's because of race, even if no intentional act of racism was involved.

    Viola Davis is a consummate actress. She's a shoo-in for the Oscar for "Fences" and will probably eventually win yet another Oscar for something else down the road. She's got the ability to sear one's soul and take them to emotional places where they've not been before. The only other actress of color that I can think of in her league was the late and great Ruby Dee, who, along with her husband, the equally gifted Ossie Davis, actually created the Black Theater on Broadway. Viola Davis is a true successor to those iconic performers. I can't get enough of her.

    First this, and then she went on to play MIchelle Obama (among other roles, of course). That's pretty impressive on a resume. Bless up.

    I bet they won't even mention Canada in the Harriet Tubman movie haha

      They probably Will mention Canada because Canadians played such a pivotal role with the effectiveness of the Underground Railroad. I still attend the 2nd Historical 2nd Baptist Church which served as the meeting and place of rest prior to entering Canada. :-)

      +San47di I think they'll do what Argo did and give Americans credit for something Canadians did
