Another great video. I love the concise explanations for each move. You never get overly bogged down with finite details - just "this is what I do and why....let's move on". Love it. Thank you.
This has become my new favorite audio engineering channel. very direct, easy to understand and practical examples, great mix of styles and genres. and an approachable host! A+ work, my dude. super appreciate it. thanks for these videos!!!
Your channel is awesome, man. I've watched so many mixing videos, and I think yours are the best I've seen, as you explain everything so clearly... plus your A/B comparisons are always so night and day. My shit always sounds like the "A", but when other people tend to be doing these videos, the A/B difference isn't audible enough to be able to tell what's going on. I also like how you A/B after every plugin you do, with explanations on why you're using each plugin, what the settings do, etc. Great work!!!
Thanks man! Sometimes those subtle mixing changes/effects are hard to hear, but in this case it’s pretty dramatic! Thanks for the feedback mate and glad you’re enjoying the content!
Just brilliant, once again. Thanks so much for sharing such a detailed walk thru on each step, plug in, settings, and "rationale" for why you made each change. This is super helpful. Would love to see a similar video on Snare drum :) (I know you did the EQ video for Snare, which is great....but I'm guessing there are other plug ins etc that you would use to transform the raw sound). Thanks again!
Nice work fellow, really glad to see you in action and learn something to... So if a mix is sent to you with a bunch of problematic channels like this kick you edit, you going to need a super capable pc to handle all that plugins....are you satisfied with your new mac? have you ever see it struggles to keep on..? what is the maximum number of plugins running simultaneous you've ever noticed..? Thank you very much, and keep on!!!!
Thanks mate! My 2019 iMac handled it all pretty well - new Mac Studio has been awesome, haven’t really had any problems - only if you have heaps of plugins with large over sampling running.
Thanks Edward! Yes this is a really old recording I dug up recently - the band wanted the stems. I Roughly remixed this song for this video. Perhaps a look at the mix on these guitars might be fun!
@@spinlightstudios Awesome! It would be awesome if you could. One more question if I may, I can hear a room reverb on that kick - is that from a sample or LX480?
Hey man, are you working on mixing and mastering exclusively on these Yamaha HS8 (I suppose it's 8inch version) and DT770 Pros? Are you using any correction software like Sonarworks etc. or just running it like it is (without any dsp)? I'm asking because your work sounds really great and way above 99% of audio youtubers and I mainly hear these type of results from guys mixing on Amphions or ATCs. I'm also a drummer so I can see a lot of similarities between our taste in mixing haha
Hey mate! Yep, just mixing on the HS8s & DT770’s. I also have a single Avantone mixcube I check things on. No corrective software. I’ve heard pretty mixed opinions on it, and personally I think once you learn how your space and monitors sound, you should be able to mix on them, just use references and check your work against mixes you like the sound of etc. I have some treatment in my space too, so that helps it sound half decent in here anyway. One day I’ll probably upgrade my monitors, but have been pretty happy with the HS8s so hasn’t been a high priority to me 🤷🏼♂️
@@spinlightstudios thank you for such a detailed response, it's a big help! I have a pair of Auratones with bettermaker amp as a mid mids and level check helper but I mix mainly on Eves SC2070 with DT880Pros and was wondering if adding Amphions One15s would make my work better but then I found your channel and was quite surprised about the quality you achieve with even cheaper monitors so I think I wouldn't spend more money on more monitors and invest in some outboard preamp and instruments instead as they should make a way bigger difference than the listening equipment. Do you have any video on the references that you like to use for different genres?
@@huberttorzewski no problem! My references are usually just whatever my clients give me to work alongside. So it’s kind of always changing. Although I used to use paramore a lot for rock mixes - their album Brand New Eyes is great. But it’s constantly changing with whatever the artist asks me to check out! The mix in this video ^ I did without any referencing - so that’s kind of “my sound” that I guess I gravitate towards when just free mixing.
Don't forget to hit that like button legends :) Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much mate! Stoked to hear you’re enjoying the videos!
I share the same sentiment. Rhys is not just showing us plugins but the way he explains his thought process makes me understand the moves he makes.

This was beautifully done
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for those priceless tricks 😊🙏
No problem!
Really liked seeing the thought process Rhys! I hope you become one of the top audio engineering channels
Thanks legend! Maybe one day!
Nice approach
Thanks!

Thanks mate! I’ll see if I can find a bad snare drum recording 😉
Cool video
Thanks Jake!
Loving these videos mate :)

Thanks Rhys.
Yay! Another great one.
Edit: Did you produce the guitar track? Really love how scooped it sounds.

There is a room sample for the kick, just adds some ambience and fullness to the sound!
@@spinlightstudios nice! Is it a part of your trigger sample pack?
@@edwardkenemorales I think this one was from the one shots pack!
Really cool stuff, am I crazy or is there reverb in there too?
Yeah might just be the reverb that the drum bus is being sent to!
